In all seriousness guys, I don't think some of you who haven't played it or just tossed it aside really know what you're missing. It is that good. And it's not a game people conformed to as it was the only thing on the platform like many claim (warhawk is a great example). Instead, it was the thing that lured people into buying an xbox. That's what really happened and when you look at it like that you may see the game in a different light.
Also: If they were to count, then I probably would've put in Gears 2, or one of the Metroid Prime games (although I think of them in the "First Person Adventure" genre)

You don't even have the graduate achievement. Why don't you actually play Halo a bit to judge it? Give it a chance. You have one of the best game series in front of you, actually play it. You're not because you aren't willing to set aside your "halo is teh overated" mentality. (for the record, it takes no almost no effort to get and is about playing the game. this is just not playing the game enough to judge)
You know all these Halo1-3 or any game+sequels isn't necessary. If you want to say Halo fine, say it once and have it stand for the whole series, its kinda pointless saying a game and all of its sequels, just have Halo stand for Halo as a series if that's your opinion.
Wolfenstein 3D, Half Life, Goldeneye. 3 reasons - Wolfenstein basically showed the way people would approach the genre from the very start, Half Life inspired so many things that any decent or even shitty shooter at this point take for granted, and ones that the best now do very well. It was the first for many things. Goldeneye, because it was really the first Console shooter that showed it could be done well for its time, very well, while having a very competitve multiplayer. Pathing the way for console shooters to be as accepted as a PC shooter at this day, when back then it was mostly a joke.
I just realized this was only past 10 years, but those stand as my 3 choices. For just 3 years I'd say, Half Life, Call of Duty and Perfect Dark.

Tough question, you have to consider importance of the biggest multiplayer and singleplayer shooters. I guess you have to go with, in order of release, Counter-Strike, Halo, and Half-Life 2.
Halflife and SS2 were released in '98, weren't they? That's 11 years. Anyway, I'd have to say Deus Ex, Halflife 2, and, uhh.....well, I suppose Invisible War gets an honourable mention.
