I learned that the XboxOne has somewhat sloppy UI and can open a portal to hell. I also learned that the PS4 seems pretty alright.

I learned that I was right to wait before buying a new console.

I learned the value of friendship in a time of confusion and upheaval.

That the PS4 is pretty boring and safe and the X1 is rough around the edges but has way more potential. I also learned that not getting a launch console was a smart move.

That both still need some work regarding interfaces and shit. Also i want to play the shit out of Zoo Tycoon when it goes down in price.

I learned the Xbox One doesn't have some amazing UI that I'm gonna be jealous of while using my PS4 like a lot of people were saying. The funniest part was Brad complaining about UI things during the PS4 livestream while assuming the Xbox One was gonna do things like party and achievement stuff so much better, only for him to find out most of the UI stuff on the Xbox One is more confusing and crappy than the PS4. Also I learned that every game on the Xbox has terrible load times.

I learned that it will be best to wait a while before getting either system since there is pretty much no reason to buy either.

#9 Posted by mjk0104 (208 posts) -

I learnt that big, expensive technology isn't worth buying into on release, and that I really want one of the new Kinect's (With some kind of usb adapter) to make some cool interactive stuff with.

I learned that i am happy with just my Wii U and 3DS right now.

#11 Edited by Krullban (1042 posts) -

That the Xbox One UI has tons more potential than the PS4 UI.

#12 Posted by crithon (3340 posts) -

they ended with "Go buy Zelda and Mario"

I don't know, kinda amusing, because I am often curious where these systems BREAK. Not exactly the bricking a system, but that whole "what's the limit, what's the problems, where does the range of the sensor, voice limits" these often things I question.

After watching the Forza Quick Look... console developers still don't know what Aniostropic Filtering is.

#14 Posted by Ben_H (3384 posts) -

That the Wii U is quite an appealing option for the time being. I kinda want to get one.

#15 Edited by Xeiphyer (5606 posts) -

They're both rushed out the door with barebones functionality, in time they should both be pretty great machines. Wait a second, I didn't learn that, that was just a confirmation of common sense.

I didn't get a chance to watch a lot of the Xbox stream, but on the bombcast they were super positive about the UI, Kinect, and lots of other things. It seems to me like their minds changed during the stream (at least the parts I watched). How accurate is that assessment?

#17 Posted by MetalBaofu (1417 posts) -

That I need to rent the 360 version of Zoo Tycoon from Gamefly at some point.

#18 Posted by tourgen (4542 posts) -

I learned that if you make a UI crappy enough you can trick people into using a slightly less crappy voice interface.

Pretty accurate. The phrase, "What the fuck?" was uttered by Jeff a fair amount of times.

That launches are always very similar in there immediate offerings.

#23 Posted by Ares42 (2731 posts) -

I learned that both Sony and MS did a completely horrible job with the "games-angle" when promoting their consoles. After having been hyped up to buy both at launch before they were revealed I was ready to just ignore them for a year or two, but after seeing the games I wish I had pre-ordered. Also, watching "the world" get their consoles while MS still hasn't even announced a release date for their box here yet is a complete bummer.

I learned that Zoo Tycoon is awesome and I wish there was a PC version. no pc version and me having bought a ps4 means that I will have to buy the lower quality xbox 360 version of Zoo Tycoon.

#25 Edited by DeadpanCakes (985 posts) -

I learned that if I'm gonna buy a console any time soon, it's gonna be a Wii U!

I mean, how am I supposed to resist Super Mario 3d World??

  • That the process of getting a party to set up properly on the Xbox One is kind of fucked.
  • That I really have no interest in controlling a console UI with voice commands.
  • That I can still easily live without Kinect in my life.
  • That for all of their differences, Sony and Microsoft's efforts are growing increasingly homogenized.

Really interested in Dead Rising 3, but since xbox doesnt arrive in norway until next year it made me start looking into Wii U/3Ds instead for some Zelda and Mario

Kinect seems as fucked up as ever, both UI's don't seem great, and I'm not to excited to play any of those games not even Forza which I typically adore.

I feel the same way, except that I disagree that it's common sense. To me, it's common sense that products aren't released until they work exactly as advertised. You and I knew they were going to come out wonky because we've been paying attention to video games news for a long time.

I was working during it and I just started watching the archive on Twitch.

What I'm learning is that Giantbomb inception is extremely funny.

Edit: Ok I'm dying over here. Fuck.

The PS4 wins by a shitload in terms of presentation, though it doesn't have Zoo Tycoon which is a heavy blow to be sure.

I assume, then, that you weren't paying attention when Dead Island came out. Or just in general.

#40 Posted by Quid_Pro_Bono (303 posts) -

This is going to sound like unnecessary snark, but it reinforced my decision early on that Nintendo platforms + PC are the way to go. I bought a 3DS during Animal Crossing time which I love, and I'm thinking that at some point this year I'll buy a Wii U. Hell, I used my next-gen money on an iPad Air and I think I'm more satisfied with that purchase than anything else - the only thing that I want to play that's exclusive is Destiny and I can live without it in my life... probably.

#41 Edited by Xymox (2107 posts) -

That I'm convinced staying PC+3DS was the best decision for now and possibly for a large part of this generation unless I start to see some amazing exclusives - and even then, prominent titles might end up on the PC anyway... so we'll see.

Launch titles are usually not very impressive from my experience, and the games shown so far seem to fit into that category fairly well.

The WiiU is looking stronger, but still not something I intend to purchase.

Also that I think I'm okay with grabbing a PS3.

#42 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11918 posts) -

That I am totally fine waiting like a year or more before getting either new console, and I should maybe think about getting a Wii U somewhere down the line.

Also, the Kinect is still dumb.

#44 Posted by sdharrison (476 posts) -

To those saying how they learned the Xbox UI has so much more "potential"

What, exactly, do you mean? I've seen a few people say this and I don't see what sort of killer-app future potential can come from voice commands and basic gesturing. It keeps getting touted as a game changing feature, but the more I see of it the less I think it even works on a gimmick level. You have to really try to make that interface work for you

#45 Posted by Slag (4616 posts) -

I learned that I liked PS4's hardware, but liked XBone's launch games (Dead Rising 3, Ryse, Killer Instinct and Zoo Tycoon in particular) more. Although none really grabbed me. I learned that neither's social ecosystem is as improved as I'd expect them to be. I learned I'd don't want a Kinect at all. I learned that games are back despite not being back yet.

but mostly I learned that I'm more content with my new gaming PC than I expected I'd be.

I was thinking of his reaction to Dead Rising 3. To me the gameplay look dull and the graphics terribad.

#48 Posted by GnuStylo (23 posts) -

I learned that the crew of Giant Bomb can make things absolutely hilarious, more of a reaffirmation I suppose.

Other than that I learned that launches are really a let down. I say this because right now I am most tempted to get a WiiU and 3DS because their software lineup is really spot on to me at the moment. That's not saying that I don't think ps4 and xbone won't be great but at the moment I'm underwhelmed.
