When your playing some RPG like Dragon Age, Fallout, or something in that matter, what do you name your main character?

I mostly go with Nathanial Shepard when I'm going with a male character. Katniss if I'm rolling with a lady. If I have a dog or whatever, calling him Dogmeat.

I go with the default name.

I go with myself, as I always play as myself in these games.

#4 Posted by Vinchenzo (6192 posts) -

Default name. It's kind of lame if you edit it.

#5 Posted by Kyreo (4600 posts) -

I usually make names up for each specific character.... it's usually some bullshit name that doesnt mean anything.....

Like the name Kyreo.

#6 Posted by AjayRaz (12422 posts) -

it's whatever name that first pops into my head in most games. i can't seem to make a character that looks like myself so when you only get to name your character (no customization) i'll usually put my name.

#7 Posted by animateria (3252 posts) -

Whatever I want.

It might be some stock name I came up with or based on some characteristic of the character (red hair for example).

Abel for male, Elly (or Elhaym) for chicks.

#9 Posted by habster3 (3595 posts) -

My own name, some random names, and others.

#10 Posted by Deusoma (3004 posts) -

I name my characters after me, even when it doesn't fit with them at all, such as when they are a dwarf.

#11 Posted by Hot_Karl (3309 posts) -

Sometimes my name, if it's a wrestling or sports game. In RPGs, I like to do either funny names (my character's name in Torchlight is Guy Mandude) or characters from the View Askewniverse (Dante, Randal, Jay, Silent Bob, etc)

It's either David Witten, Killmatron Bajillionaire, or Alliso-7, depending on gender.

Oreos...

More specifically, they taste good with milk...

Why I even said that in the first place... I don't even know.

Depends on what kind of character I'm playing, I guess. If its largely irrelevant, often my own. If there's a default name, though (say, Tidus from FFX), don't ever rename him.

#20 Posted by BeachThunder (11793 posts) -

Usually something weird that I end up spending ages deliberating on, especially in RPGs where I don't want to start hating my character's name half way through. I spend waaaay too much time on character creation.

I'm surprised that a lot of people seem to use their own name.

#21 Posted by MysteriousBob (6272 posts) -

My name, because I'm an ego maniac.
And no, my real name is not "Bob or "Robert". I just go by "Bob" because its a funny name.

Its not just ego though. In an RPG, I want this character I control to be the result of my choices. Hence why it is in essence- me. When I tell my friends about what I did in Fallout 3, I tell them what I did, not Tidus or some other shitface I'm controlling. Me. If its a more linear JRPG, I don't care as much. Games like Fallout 3 and Fable 2 are really "your experiences".

#22 Posted by TheGreatGuero (9130 posts) -

Depends. Sometimes the default name, or I try to make another known character or person and use their name. Like in Knights of the Old Republic, I chose the Kevin Costner looking character model and named him Kevin Costner. Did the same one with the guy that looks like Dave Chappelle. It was awesome.

Matthias,Valir or Arzann.

For JRPGs - Kozu Otomo (male), female leads are fewer, but Yukiko is a name I've used in other games
For WRPGs - Penfold Dust is a easy one to remember for my very few male characters.  Females are plentiful, but I usually use Strawberry, Cinnamon and Sunflower.  However, currently I'm played Oblivion on the PC with a elf named Bunny-Love.

#25 Posted by ArchScabby (5809 posts) -

usually just my name.

If I was one of your RPG characters, I'd kill myself from the sheer embarrassment.
#27 Posted by TheMustacheHero (6655 posts) -

Helotais is the name I use for any RPG, if it aint that then it's Mustache or TheMustacheHero.

#28 Posted by PenguinDust (12479 posts) -
@MysteriousBob:  Ha-ha, yeah...I have a whole list of exotic names that I won't go into too much detail about less I offend.  ;-)
#29 Posted by Dtat (1623 posts) -

I use the default name. If there isn't one, I usually use my name or something from literature. I named all my Oblivion characters aftercharacters from the Three Musketeers.
#30 Posted by AgentJ (8778 posts) -

Usually if there is a default name I go with that, but if there isn't I go with my own.

#31 Posted by ThePaleKing (613 posts) -

Gary Oak.

#32 Posted by Brockly46 (645 posts) -

default but if i must choose i give it my real name, Brock

#33 Edited by CornontheCobbe (2645 posts) -

Vagina-face is what i named the majority of my characters. Then in Mass Effect i stuck with Default.

#34 Posted by SPACETURTLE (1622 posts) -

Depends, usually I go with Spaceturtle, as I do with anything that requires a user name. But when it comes to game with deeper stories I tend to choose a more serious name. Don't really have a default.

#35 Posted by LiquidPrince (15897 posts) -

For western RPG's a variety of stuff. For JRPG's Takeshi or something along those lines.

#36 Posted by kishan6 (1914 posts) -

Kishan or Mike

#37 Posted by AlwaysAngry (2924 posts) -

I name then what my name is in real life.

#38 Posted by Christabel (5 posts) -

Unimaginatively, my real name.  And Lord have mercy if I have to name more than one thing.

This is due to a rather wretched stint in Ultima Online, wherein I generated a plethora of characters.  Their names got sillier and sillier as I progressed... I started out with fairly normal names, then descended into a flurry of weirdness involving names like Lady Cabbagehands and Strangemeat.  WoW names were no better.  There are actually people out there that are so offended by the name "Strangepork" that they felt the need to report me.  Who knew?

#39 Posted by JebranRush (36 posts) -

I usually keep it the default name. Depends on the game, but sometimes I change it to my name.

#40 Posted by Cube (4366 posts) -

Boner

#41 Posted by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

Bushwald Sexyface if there's character customization; Vincent, otherwise.

#42 Posted by happyfatman (149 posts) -

Roth Steele.  Without exception.

#43 Edited by Semition (731 posts) -

Usually the default name. Otherwise I use names of Eastern European countries.

#44 Posted by Mattalorian (594 posts) -

Part of me doesn't want to go with the default name, so I always try to come up with something original... But then I always draw a blank, and settle for the name of an obscure celebrity. "Gerstmann" or "Caravella", for example. Totally geeky and lame, of course, but for whatever reason it always seems to degenerate into that.

#45 Posted by rjayb89 (7719 posts) -

Usually Charie or Jillian.

#48 Posted by lazyturtle (1228 posts) -

#49 Posted by ma_rc_01 (363 posts) -

Professor Stabbingsworth, and if that's too long, Greg or Epona

#50 Posted by jlev880 (204 posts) -

Either Paul or Jamal, I feel those names are pretty solid.
