I don't need a hundred replies, however I want to say both games are very different, one is realistic or more realistic, the other one is too fictional. I train in the same martial art as sam fisher, I know his hand to hand combat skills are make belive like cqc. Yes there is an army cqc, however it's not the same as what snake is using. Sam fisher doesn't use an electric knife or hide in a barrel. I think this realism is appealing to me since they really had people to consult with that works in that field. I can't stand a game that's so unrealistic with boss battles and tranquiler darts. Splinter cell games are real stealth even if it's boring to alot of people, mgs games are more stealth action.
I like the characters and story of Metal Gear better. But Splinter Cell by far has the better gameplay. And gameplay is what matter in games, so I'd say Splinter Cell.
And IMO Sam Fisher > Snake. But every other MGS character is awesome.

I think Raiden from MGS2 was a moron. I still liked playing as him though in that game. But MGS4 Raiden, he is such a badass and he is one of the strongest characters in that game. He gets mortally wounded like 4 times, always comes back, and always fights with gradually missing limbs.
He stopped Outer Heaven in it's tracks with his back, for christs sakes.
Raiden has saved Snake so many times it's not even fit.

In general I vastly prefer the MGS Franchise, I can play any of its games any day, all day. But I've never had any urges to replay any of the SC games.
I liked MGS much better. The story was out there and original, and the gameplay was easy enough to understand, but deep enough to play around with.
Splintercell had some cool ideas (optical camera), but the game came down to guess and check a little too much. I didn't care for the first game much at all.
The majority of people who say SC is better have got themselves caught up in the hype for Conviction.
The Metal Gear Solid games will be talked about in 20 years time and make peoples list of favourite games ever, something that can't be said about Splinter Cell.

Prefer the gameplay and characters in Splinter Cell so I guess Splinter Cell. MGS has far too much anime cutscene bullshit and not enough of its (excellent) gameplay, MGS 3 was a top quality game though.

Yeah you're right. During the mission to locate Sunny, Raiden was almost killed. They managed to salvage his upper head, including his brain, but his body was totally destroyed. The suit gave him a second chance to live, and he could feel free to be as careless as he wanted with it because his limbs and white blood can be replaced and repaired.
Skytylz, Snake wear a suit which enhances his performance too, and he wholly relies on gadgets. You never see Raiden using a gun do you? He's practically the MGS equivalent of a Jedi.
Put the new Splinter Cell and the new MGS side by side and MGS is kind of a joke. Though I know a lot of people are more interested in the contrived melodrama than the game part of the game.
It actually depends on what the individual prefers. The gameplay in both games is different enough to not be comparable.
That being said, Metal Gear Solid 4 was a piece of garbage. Any Splinter Cell game beats MGS4. If you asked me to choose, though, I'd go with MGS2 being the best out of the MG/SC franchises, so, therefore, MGS would be superior.
I always like MGS (despite its inane story) due to the always available option of killing mofo's in my way. I left a trail of death in MGS 1-3. Conviction might swing me to Splinter Cell though -- the M&E feature is awesome.
