Wouldn't game-player be more appropriate? VLC plays videos, I play games.

That's a term that people who don't play video games use.

Hell, the shitty but true answer is it means whatever it means to you.

My answer is that digital games excite, amuse, and intrigue me in a way different than any other medium, and until they fail to do so, I will spend too much time experiencing them.

I guess to your art teacher, it means you might know more about mythological creatures then the average non-gamer. I know I learned what Cerberus was through Final Fantasy, and the first time I recall anything about Medusa was in Kid Icarus. So I guess it's true. Gamers may know slightly more about mythological creatures than the average person.
