Overall GOTY's are bullshit, but the individual lists are good.

God this. I always feel like GB has taken game journalism "to the next level" or whatever you want to call it, essentially promoting each individual editor instead of hiding behind the site's name pretending everyone is the same ("This is what we thought of the game" or "come join us as we tell you what we think of it!") and yet for some reason they still hold onto this dumb and outdated idea of a unified GOTY.

Everyone is different and everyone is going to have a different opinion for GOTY, so what is even the point of a unified one? iirc last year ME2 was only the winner on 2 of the guy's lists, and wasn't even in Alex's top 10 and yet it won overall goty. Why? Clearly most of the staff didn't think it was the best game of the year since they each spent prior days telling us what was the best. I honestly can't even take unified GOTY choices seriously, on GB or any site. Individual is the way to go, always. Oh and Skyrim is clearly going to win, though I will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't.

That is the truth brother.

Like years before, it's going to come down to something they all completed, or got really close to doing so. Last year, Ryan said he would've fought for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but he knew he had no shot. Add in the fact that Patrick is now a permanent member of the Bombcast (I don't really like him there, but that's just my opinion), Skyward Sword is definitely a no-go as well as many others on that list. It's going to be a unanimous win for Skyrim.

You don't listen to the GOTY podcasts right? They really seem to take their time deciding on what games deserve the title of GOTY.

HELL YES! Demon Souls is my favorite childhood game and I was getting bummed out that nobody was considering it for GoTY 2011, but thankfully I found you.

I love you.

I'd say Skyrim, because it's the freshest experience to them, and Portal 2, while amazing to them, came out at the start of this year. Games usually (but not always) that come out near the beginning of the year don't win game of the years. I think runner ups for game of the year though will be Gears of War 3, Dead Space 2, Uncharted 3, Arkham City, and Portal 2. I think Skyrim will probably win if all of them play it and enjoy it. I'm going off how I perceive their views as, not my own. I haven't played Uncharted 3, Arkham City, or Skyrim yet, though I will be playing Skyrim soon enough; whenever my brother's done with it. Oh, and another runner up might be L.A. Noire.

Mass Effect 2 was their Game of the Year last year. That came out at the start of the year. Also, when Portal 2 came out, they all loved it. I'd say it'd be between Portal 2 and Skyrim as well with Skyrim likely taking it.

Okay what do you think the top 5 nominees multi platform are for GB crew? It pretty obvious Portal 2 and Skyrim are on there. They turned pretty hard on L A Noire. MK, Batman, and if they remember Dead Space 2 was this year. Bastion might have a nominee shot since it not excluded unlike reviewing it. I have to imagine whatever wins multi platform wins overall, cause I don't think Uncharted 3 will win. (Hell Little Big Planet 2 was well loved by Jeff, maybe it wins PS3 exclusive) that only really leaves Skyward Sword as the Wii Winner (Let be honest it will prob win Wii). I guess I'm more interested in the special awards more than anything else.

Call me crazy, but I expect a really quick pick on this one kinda like how StarCraft 2 picked up PC only last year with no debate.

Also, I've been listening to last years GOTY pod casts (because I'm sick and need stuff to listen to... why not?) and while Brad said recently they didn't consider Ilo Milo last year- they actually did and Brad was the one who quickly dismissed it when it was mentioned haha

I believe it's in the first day of 2010 GOTY podcast. I thought that was kinda funny.

@Liquidus: Why is someone else stating that Mass Effect 2 came out this year (on PS3)? That doesn't matter; Mass Effect 2 won't win because it's a game that came out last year on 360, and it doesn't help that they already gave it a game of the year last year. What I meant by Portal 2, is that it's often harder for a great game from the beginning of the year to beat out a great game near the middle to end. Portal 2 has a very good chance of winning, Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 doesn't, even if it is every bit as good as its 360 counterpart and fantastic compared to other great games this year. I don't even think ME2 will get a runner up, as I've said before to someone else. I still think Skyrim will win if all of them like it, but if not, then Portal 2 is probably going to be the game of the year.

By the way, I've had two people so far reply to my comment mentioning Mass Effect 2, I don't know why that is. It doesn't matter how great that game is, it's not going to win this years game of the year. That just doesn't happen.

Mass Effect 2 has been mentioned in response to people saying "Portal 2 won't win because it came out too early in the year." Mass Effect 2 came out January 2010 and still won GOTY.

@Christoffer: Portal 2 was more different from Portal, than Skyrim was from Oblivion? The fuck are you smoking? Oblivion barely looks like it exists in the same universe as Skyrim. And not just in terms of quality. The world itself look so different, feels so different. The combat, especially stealth and magic, act a lot differently, and when you combine all of the different options, it feels more akin to the Halo combat sandbox than Oblivions combat, which was generally wail on a dude till he died. The way quests and stories evolve is pretty different, and the whole dragon/shout mechanic is pretty new. Skyrim was the bare bones of Elder Scrolls, but the meat of the game is pretty new. I'm not saying Portal 2 was bad, or a carbon copy of Portal, far from it. I'd be hard pressed to pick between them in terms of which I adore more, but saying that Skyrim moves it's franchise significantly less so than Portal 2 did with it's own, that's a little silly to my mind.

Have you listened to any of the GOTY bombcast debates? They are AMAZING. For that reason alone, the award is fine by me. It's a good thing to do, to try and figure out, and even if it never really works, that's ok. The point is the conversation around it, and celebrating all of the amazing games that were even considered.

I can't believe how everyone is forgetting about Dead Space 2 as a contender this year. That game was probably my 2nd fav game of the year next to 'Skyrim' the one game to rule them all. Dark Souls is great too but I don't think it could be GOTY because it's so divisive.

I'm not smoking anything, but thanks for asking. I still think every argument you have for Skyrim is "perfecting the formula" rather than inovation. I'm saying that Skyrim comes closer to what every RPG developer already want to make. It's a great leap for RPG's. You could say that Portal 2 is just an extended Portal 1. But I love that kind of extremely tight and economic story telling that builds a universe in a minimalistic and creative way. Not many games do that. And to pair it with such awesome gameplay without any cutscenes or interupts. And the quality of the dialog and the delivery!! So, call me an idiot, but I think Portal 2 is one of the greatest games I've played in years.

I haven't finished Skyrim yet. So that could off course change.

As far as the people working for Giant Bomb is concerned I've heard enough love for Skyrim and I can't see them picking anything else and it's certainly not U3. Possible other choices are Portal 2 and Batman: Arkham City.

@Christoffer: I agree that Skyrim isn't innovative, and I agree that Portal 2 does amazing things. But those things are kind of Valve's MO at this point. They've been doing it for over a decade. In terms of changes made from one game to the next though, it's impossible to deny that Skyrim not only made a bigger leap in quality, but changed far more than Portal 2 did. Difference is, Portal was already pretty much flawless, so all they could really do is make it bigger, or worse. Neither really innovate in terms of their genres, but in terms of change from one game to the next, Portal 2 is way more of a Batman: AC and Skyrim more of an Uncharted 2.

Skyrim no doubt. What with the fatigue settling in for Batman and Uncharted, I don't see many strong contenders. And I think they would be divided on Portal 2.

Does no one remember Portal 2 at all?

Anyone?

You'd be crazy for that not to be in contention this year, even with games like Skyrim out during the holidays.

EDIT: Never mind, a bunch of other folks have already gave Portal 2 their due props. Will it be Skyrim this year? How boring.

Considering the faded love for L.A. Noire and the attention vacuum for the other two, I don't think we'll be seeing any of these on GOTY. Personally, I absolutely loved L.A. Noire and Fight Night: Champion, but I'm not of the majority opinion.

Im with you i think L.A. Noire has faded but so far i would consider it my personal GOTY. Only original title this year that presented something unlike anything i have ever played.

Gears 3, MW3, Uncharted 3, Forza 4, and Arkham City are all hurt by being seen as "more of the first game" and I doubt that we will have a rematch of 2 years ago where it was Uncharted 2 vs Arkham Asylum since both games have inherently less punch since they are sequels. Dark Souls' only supporter would be Vinny (Jeff actively dislikes the game, and Brad/Ryan/Patrick haven't really played that much of it) so it's chances seem grim.

BF3's single player campaign isn't good enough for GOTY consideration and a multiplayer focused game doesn't stand up up to a meaningful single player campaign (Burnout Paradise, MW2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, StarCraft 2 didn't win). Mortal Kombat's post-release DLC and matchmaking troubles will probably hurt its chances, which as a fighting game weren't that great to begin with (SF4 didn't even make the top 3 multiplatform games and as mentioned before multiplayer-focused games don't win GOTY often). The team, especially Patrick, seemed to have soured a bit on L.A. Noire and it doesn't seem to hold the weight that it once did back at release.

Skyward Sword's chances remains to be seen, as the entire crew, except Patrick, has yet to have played or voiced their opinions, but Dead Space 2 will probably put up the most fight of any games I have mentioned so far, with Brad and Vinny as it's strongest suppporters, though Ryan has not played it. Saint's Row 3's extreme craziness might endear it to the crew, especially Ryan and Jeff, but GOTY has always gone to either games with immense emotional investment or large gameplay innovations, and the sheer craziness in a generic openworld crime setting seems to be in direct opposition to that paradim.

That leaves Portal 2, and Skyrim, and I see Skyrim taking it with less contention than other years. I think this will be the most unanimous GOTY since the site launched.

The question should have been "What game do you think will win Giantbomb's overall game of the year NEXT YEAR?"

This year there is simply no competition. There is only one game that deserves it and it will win it with ease.

We'll probably be talking about why Skyrim deserves to be game of the year for next year too! The runaway success of this game is likely pushing bethesda into overdrive to make DLC for the game so I would be shocked if we're not still talking about the newest dlc stuff for skyrim this time next year.

Actiivsion is probably already making COD: Medieval warfare!

I am calling it now... Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Everyone in the group have been rolling pretty hard into that game that i dont see what other game has had every one on board like this game.

You're being a little hyperbolic. There are a ton of quality games that I feel are more deserving then Skyrim. That's not to say it's not worth it, but that there are a bunch of other choices as well.

Even though it won't win GOTY, I REALLY hope that Deus Ex gets some recognition. It sounds like Jeff and Patrick are the only ones to play it which is disturbing.

Either we know the Giant Bomb staff that well or they're just really predictable.

It'll probably be Skyrim, but I hope Portal 2 gets some love.

Skyrim steals Portal 2's lunch and laughs while it plays gymnastics.

Portal 2 makes Skyrim bend over to pick up the soap in the shower.

This guy totally isn't on Bethesda's payroll.
