What if: there was a lady-type in core GB?

I would like that, but knowing Internet, it would deviate into one of two situations:

• "A decently looking woman... eye candy... show us some skin..."
• "Get out! Your reasoning is invalid because you don't have an Y chromosome... And everyone that disagrees with me is a white knight"

@video_game_king: Holy crap, your post just made me think of GB becoming so big that ladies at Pax or whatever do gender swapped cosplay, you know, like all the Sexy Lady Magnetos and Sexy Lady Wolverines at Comic Con. Just a whole row of Sexy Lady Vinnys, Sexy Lady Jeffs, just on into infinity.

I think I literally just broke my brain.

I think the core of GB would change, weather it wanted to or not.

Giantbomb folks are generally above anything offensive or infantile, but a certain amount of awkwardness is always going to come out of a mostly male community on the internet on this topic.

If the lady can hang and joke on a GB level, I am down. However, I'll probably end up getting a little crush on her because I like the idea of a funny girl, and then I will be sad when I hear she is in a commited relationship. But I wanna make it clear that, this lady should be brought in cause she is cool, not because someone decided there should be a girl... like the fifth teenage mutant ninja turtle, Venus.

That would be a great shakeup for a site in need of some serious overhauling, but they can't do it based on gender alone (for obvious reasons). All we can do is be encouraging and supportive of great applicants regardless of sex and we'll see who's the best fit for the job.

Yeah, she's alright, but personally I hope they go for Vinessa. Sure she's bald and has huge arms, but it suits her, and her love of FMV games and black T-shirts will surely win over the fans.

Eh, she's not half bad, but personally I hope they give Cara Vella a shot. No one controls a tricaster quite like she does, and I can't imagine anyone topping her love of board games and the Souls series. Her enthusiasm is just so infectious!

As to the other thing, I can absolutely sympathize. Since all the video-game commentary figures I like are the opposite gender from me, it's easy for me to fall into the idiotic-pathetic-crush-trap over very charismatic personality types that I have a completely one-sided/4th-wall relationship to. I wish I knew how to exorcise that demon, but that's pretty much impossible since I'm essentially a retarded shoujo-kei under this cynical outer shell. So instead I just try to punch myself in the face now and then and walk it off.

No. There are also only three Star Wars movies, three Indiana Jones movies, and one Matrix movie.

Lady-type, female-type, male-type, man-type, it doesn't matter to me as long as the person is passionate about video games and can feel natural on camera or microphone with the rest of the crew.

As long as she as a passion for the industry and knows a thing or two, why not. I like to think our community is mature enough to appreciate a great personality whatever sex he/she is.

It irritates me when sites simply throw female presenters in your face for eye candy (looking at you IGN), not to say they don't know what they're on about but the comments and replies from the IGN community sometimes make me want to slam my head against a wall.

Jess McDonell on Gamespot seems cool, so yes I think it would be a cool addition to the bombcrew.

I think they should hire the person that best matches the current chemistry and dynamic of the group regardless of race and gender.

Well yeah. If they fit then it shouldn't matter why they fit. In an ideal world, anyway.

I don't want any women on the GB crew. It's not that I'm sexist, but having a woman on the crew would mean the increase of incredibly creepy comments. Also, I have a feeling it would end up the same way every other gaming website uses women, just showing them off as sexy gamer girls in their thumbnails to increase their traffic... Hiring a woman for the sake that she's a woman would be the single dumbest thing ever.

I think you are over thinking the problem honestly. I have seen quite a few women who talk about games and know their stuff. Sure its still a "boys club" in the sense that guys still out number women by a good amount in the industry. I feel it has more to do with the market can be intimidating when every women in the industry has to defend their worth in a gaming discussion.

The pressure to be eye candy status or be some gaming guru might turn off some women or other people who are not deep in the gaming world. With that said if you look around there are more and more women playing, talking and being a part of games. You just have to look for it and if their opinion don't suit yours i don't feel like its a crime or something wrong with the state of gaming or anything.

It could be completely possible for a women to be apart of the bombcast and i don't think it has to be a matter of watching manners or anything. Women can hang and be just as blunt as men when talking about games.

I'm for it. Someone get Cara Ellison on the phone. Or at least on a regular podcast with Danny, because both those accents on the same podcast would be like candy to my ears.

This to me hits the nail on the head; it's rare for a female to mix in perfectly with an all boys-club. In my own experience, when I'm hanging out with male friends and a female is introduced - the mood changes. Things get a little more tense and people watch what they say a little more. This isn't the say there is something wrong with the opposite sex; I'm sure a similar thing happens when a male enters an all-female space. I imagine women choose to hang out with only other women sometimes so they can be a little less guarded than they would be with men present. There are some women (and presumably some men) who can enter these spaces without changing the dynamic - but it's rare. I think it's even more unlikely at giantbomb given the reason's you've outlined. I'm open to it; but I wouldn't expect it.

I don't agree with people that say diversity needs to be injected into this place; I'm personally employed in a female dominated industry and I don't see the lack of men as a problem that needs to be fixed. I don't see any sane reason there needs to be equal gender representation across every industry and in every workplace; some places will have more men and others will have more women. That's okay. The only diversity this place needs is with respect to what types of games/interests the new employee brings to the table. Drew for example brings diversity to the site because he plays a lot of simulation type games while the others don't - also eurovision. If they hire another dude I won't be surprised and I won't be upset - yes, even if it's another straight white dude (the horror). I also won't be upset if it's a female; Jeff is well aware that giantbomb is a personality driven website and I'm sure whoever he picks will be based on who meshes well in terms of conversation.

I agree with you that Leigh Alexander isn't a good fit. I've been a fan of her writing for years; but I prefer reading her work to watching/listening to her. The time she was on the bombcast was terrible; it doesn't make me dislike her as a person I just don't think she fits in. I remember liking Karen Chu and Jenn Frank on 1up podcasts and the 1up Show back in the day.
