I dont know to be honest, I played a lot of fantastic games this generation. If someone put a gun to my head I would probably say Grand Theft Auto IV.
What is the best game of this generation of consoles to date?
Looking at my All Time Favorites list the most deserving one would probably be Dragon Age: Origins. Though it's kind of hard for me to say that given I had some big problems with glitches and art style in that game. This generation has been great, though not really for the genres that appeal to me.
I would probably say Dark Souls. Despite the many flaws of that game, I am surprised I have enjoyed it as much as I did.
Starcraft II WoL. I mean, this game. The best sixty bucks I've ever spent when it comes to extremely high quality gameplay every damn match, and I've played hundreds. Plus the awesome campaign, and the SC II community itself.
If we don't count PCs it would have to be Demon's Souls followed closely by Arkham Asylum. I liked DS more than its sequel because it was so goddamn innovative, plus I liked the soundtrack way more. Dark Souls was kinda disappointing to me because I went with a dex focused character and all the dex builds in the game are SHIT.
Man, that is a really difficult one. I would have to go with....I thought it would be something cool and arsty, but I consulted with my wife and she gave me a lot of evidence that Modern Warefare (Uno) was one of my most played games (and enjoyed). However, we also decided that if we were to go buy sheer enjoyment, not time, it would have to be Mass Effect. Many would say it's a rudimentary story-line, but I call those sci-fi snobs. The rich universe that game built with me kept me moving forward to see what would happen next. I'm an advocate for improving story-telling in video games, but Mass Effect pretty much nailed what this generations "best story" really needed.
So, overall (based on time and involvement): Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
and based on impression: Mass Effect.
Portal 2
But i change my mind about questions like these all the time. It's kinda like asking someone his/her favorite game of all time. I answer Final Fantasy VI most of the time but not always so i guess that makes it my favorite overall? Portal 2 is the same for this gen.
Close contender would be (in no particular order), Call of Duty 4, Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Final Fantasy XII (shut up it's awesome and came out during this gen!).
I also really need to play MGS4 again. With the trophy patch just released now might be just the time!
I would have to say no single game has impressed me more then Batman: Arkham City this generation, it was almost perfect. I may have put more time into Skyrim or Dark Souls or Red Dead or Bayonetta or Witcher II but none of them gave us the total package. Some games might have better graphics or be longer or have great combat, but nothing brought them all together to give me an experience like Arkham. It was not just playing a game, it was as captivating as watching the Dark Knight the first time in theaters and that is something only very rare games can do. ZOE2 did it, Metal Gear 1 & 3 did it and that's about it.
Dark Souls, then Demon's Souls. Hands down the most rewarding gaming experiences I've had of this generation, and probably second only to Metal Gear Solid 3 in the all time category.

Yeah, not the most well made game of this gen, but as far as experiences that stuck with me goes, it's way up there. Bioshock is on that list too.

You know. I think of the best game on consoles this generation, and I can think of maybe 5 or 6 games that are PC only and far exceed it's quality.
I'm calling your bluff, dude.
Demon Souls.
When I wrote that in my head I meant to say PC 'first' meaning the lead platform is PC, not PC only. I think I wrote it that way because in my head I've come to the conclusion, why would anyone want to play these games on console when they're such a better experience to me. To me, it might as well only be out on PC.

Well, that I can agree with you on and have pretty much no defense for.
To be fair, there might be 5 to 6 games that are PC exclusive and are better than anything that the consoles have put out, I just don't know about them. I also wanted to make you sweat. I only had a pair of 4's and you folded, hah!
Fallout: New Vegas.
So many great games to choose from this generation though. It's hard to simply pick one, but this is the game I probably put the most time into, and it offered a lot of quality replay value. Definitely my favorite roleplaying game this generation. Witcher 2 definitely deserves a mention as far as that goes though.
There's maybe four or five games that I could say were the best game of this generation, but the one that has had the most impact on me was Metal Gear Solid 4.
Here are some of my personal favorites organized by general genre:
Platformer: Rayman Origins
FPS: Bioshock
TPS: Uncharted 2
Survival Horror: Dead Space
Puzzle: Portal
Western RPG: Fallout 3
JRPG: Persona 3 Portable (That counts, right?)
Character Action: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Open World (nonRPG): Red Dead Redemption (Just beat out Saint's Row 3)
"Indie": Limbo
