You know, the parts of a videogame which are just so damn insane and crazy that it leaves mark in your memory. Such as the famous ones like MGS's Psycho mantis fight.

Or to newer videogames such as Fallout 3's point lookout part. which is my favorite! (insanely awesome moment that I will not spoil.) or certain plot twists which blow your mind! (think of some, because I refuse to spoil any at all to anyone here.)

Honestly, in my opinion, the biggest mind**** to ever happen in a videogame had to have been star ocean 3's *twist* this *twist* was so out there, and so strange that it literally blew peoples minds... but not in a good way. I wish to spoil it, but do not want people to miss out on this... expierence, but if you ask anyone who has beaten the game about the *twist* they know EXACTLY what you are talking about. It wasn't a bad idea for the *twist* really, but it was done in about 5 seconds after some pretty major crap happened thus it wasn't foreshadowed at all, good idea but horribly exacuted.

What do you think is your favorite mind**** moment, while choosing another for being the biggest mind**** moment in gaming history, in your opinion?

For me it is probably MGS2 where the colonel starts going weird and telling you to turn your game off because you was playing too long, it was like midnight while I was playing and I freaked. One moment where I lost my shit was the end of splosion man, for obvious reasons.

You're threads are also getting better and therefore worse.

Just not so much in thread titles.

For me, Portal is the first one that comes to mind, because most of the time playing it, I was like "damn, this game is trippy!"  I can't think of any plot mindfucks off the top of my head though.

Well, not in the thread title.

Also, dude I can see this thread becoming a total spoiler clusterfuck, maybe some warning should be added to the title, or at least the OP? I know users can't edit thread titles, can Mods though?

Deadly Premonition? Or is that too obvious?

I mean, that whole game is weird, and kinda batshit-crazy, but God, the last hour-or-so of that game is ridiculous.

The whole "Would you Kindly" thing from BioShock was pretty nifty in my opinion. It was one of those twists that made you think back through the entire game and realize just how things went.

I'm currently playing through Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, so I'm remembering the couple of twists from the "original" game, such as the current whereabouts of Dragonmaster Dyne and what had happened to Althena, though in retrospect I think those were only cool twists because I was young at the time. If the dialogue in the remake follows the "original's" closely enough, then it should have been apparent quite quickly - they lay it out pretty thick. Along that same vein, Final Fantasy 8's "We're all from the same orphanage but don't remember it!" was a neat twist for a young mind, but downright silly when you think about it now.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is full of giant mind fucks. The more your character went insane, the more the game would start to mess with you. Like popping up a screen that looked like a GameCube window indicating your memory card was corrupted and your save was lost. Or would make you think your TV was turning the volume down.

This, you can swear all you want in your thread, even call someones mom a whore and the mods won't mind. But the mods have declared that no swearing is allowed in the thread title so that was a smart choice :P
First: why are we putting asterisk on both sides of the word "twist"?

Heavy Rain, though it probably shouldn't have been so obvious.
It hit me when the game decided to go back in time and show a drunk-on-whiskey-or-scotch Dad.
That's all I needed to see, him sitting outside drinking, right at the beginning of the part. Nothing else had started..

But still, it was a twist that I enjoyed

@ZeForgotten:

The main reason I put astericks on the word *twist* for that game is because it is quite possibly the most ballsiest plot twist ever. I am not joking, the idea was great and I could tell that the devs themselves wanted to do it from the start of the star ocean franchise just to mess with its fanbase. Seriously research that twist. it is quite possibly the most insane twist ever. M, Knight could NEVER think of something as crazy.

Though it was handled very badly in terms of pacing, it was a great idea in my opinion. They just needed some damn foreshadowing.

Why the hell would I wanna research a twist to a game I've played 3 times already?
I was just wondering why there was this need for astericks, that's all.

Kotor of course springs up (in retrospect, how the hell did I not see that coming?), but so does Jade Empire. Probably one of my most memorable moments in gaming was when your master walks up to you after defeating the supreme bad guy and congratulates you. He then throws a crystal up in the air, turns around and kills you, revealing that he is in fact the real supreme bad guy. (The 'oh shit no' realisation when he threw the crystal up in the air will stick with me for some time).

Also Chrono Trigger - who the hell kills off the main character half way through a game?!

The beginning of Jak 2 is probably my favourite because that one actually changed the whole franchise.

Honourable mentions go to:
Psycho Mantis in the original Metal Gear Solid.
The ending of Limbo.
And of course... "Would you kindly".

MGS: Snake Eater
The whole twist of the boss' defection while not completely unforeseeable was still amazingly impactful in terms of the mythology overall. In one game Kojima effectively established a new protagonist that was the catalyst behind Big Boss' defection and was entirely convincing in doing so, you couldn't help but feel his actions from that point on didn't have some justification behind them. People like to point to FFVII and that scene as their watershed moment in games, but for me this had me invested like nothing before it. Also MGS4, not least for actually banishing the cynic in me and getting me to believe on multiple occasions that yes, Snake might actually die.

Bioshock
This definitely deserves a mention, it basically de-constructed your role as the player and made you feel redundant in the process. It was a great moment but was somewhat undermined by the endgame that followed which was completely routine gameplay wise.

Persona 3
Maybe because its still fresh in my mind but it  had a very strong bait and switch about two thirds of the way through the story. Being informed that all your hard work up until this point had only brought about the apocalypse was a shocking twist. That's not to mention that all the bosses you had defeated had prevented this, coupled with death awakening who you had been carrying all along . It probably sounds crazy to anyone reading who hasn't played the game (and it is), but essentially it's you being told that everyone is going to die soon and it's all your fault.

First thing that always comes to mind for me is the "Would you kindly?" part in BioShock. It's like the perfect twist because it's always there right in your face and you never really notice it but when they finally reveal to you ........ that game's 4 years old but I don't wanna ruin anything for anyone. Other mindfuck moments would be Portal last part + ending, MGS2 when the AI goes all crazy and Shadow of the Colossus ending.

The one thing I remember most is near the end of MGS2 when the AI is fucking up.

The image of the skeletal, eyeless colonel freaked me out for a good while back then.

EDIT: Also in Snake Eater, during the fight with the End, having him sneak up behind me while I was trying to scope him out in first person mode and shooting me in the back made me completely paranoid for the rest of that fight.

Bioshock - Amazing twist, its staring you in the face the whole time like someone previously said and then when they drop a bomb on you, its a total OH SHIIT!

Assassins Creed 2 - When you figure out the secret video flashback thing, it was batshit insane.
Assassins Creed BH - The last part of the game, comes out of ABOSLUTELY NOWHERE and I couldn't believe what I just saw. Also another one was when you are solving the problems related to the truth and this game came out a few months after the G20 riots in Toronto (my hometown) and there are pictures of the riots and I saw myself, I fucking lost it.
Final Fantasy X - Tidus and Auron were dead the whole time, WTF?
