Red barrel. I guess that's more of an item... so yeah, tri-force. Or the red cross for health.
What is the most well known symbol in a video game?
Pac-man definitely. It may be obvious to us as gamers to instantly recognize the tri-force but I promise you that if I went to the room next to mine and asked my sister if she knew what it was, she wouldn't have a clue. Pac-man, however, is something that everyone recognizes and can identify instantly, no matter who you are.

I'd say the 1-up. Pac-Man is very well known as well though. The first thing that came to my mind was exploding barrel though, then I realized that only die-hard gamers would really recognize that as a video game item.
Pac-Man.
First thing I thought was triforce, but the zelda series isn't the most well-known/mainstream, CoD doesn't have a logo, and no one remembers halo's, so either Mario or an older arcade game are the only ones that are left. Only thing is, there's no symbol that everyone knows from mario, except for perhaps the head. Anyone who hasn't played a mario title will not know what a 1-up mushroom is, but everyone who has ever played pac-man or walked into an arcade knows what pac-man looks like.

It's not THE most well known symbol, but it's popular enough. "
I don't know about the Tri-force, you'd be surprised how many people know absolutely nothing about video games, apart from Mario, Halo and Rock Band.
I'd say that Mario's mushroom is the most well-known symbol among non-gamers, but when it comes to gamers, I'd agree with the Tri-Force.

The tri-force may be a popular symbol for gamers. But the 1up or mushroom logo is much more popular for both serious gamers and for not-so-knowledgeable ones
