I would have to say REmake because the atmosphere is created was amazing - tense and full of suspence. Graphically speaking the game was amazing bringing the Spencer Mansion to a whole new level and not only that, the introduction of new monsters ( Lisa Trevor anyone?) made the game new to a RE veteran. So how about you guys?

Resident Evil 4 because its the one that got me into Resident Evil, I thought the shooting was well done and it had a creepy atmosphere.  Actually the only Resident Evil's I like are 4 & 5.

Resident Evil 4, easily. It's one of the best games I've ever played. It's actually a bit longer than you'd think, and yet there's never a dull moment. Everything about it is just awesome, and the gameplay was excellent. I loved the characters, the settings, and all the variety it offered. Also, for a wuss like me, it wasn't so scary that I wanted to turn it off. Instead, it was just more intense and action-packed.

The Resident Evil remake on Gamecube was really great, but if it wasn't for that grenade launcher glitch, I never would have finished it. It scared the living heck out of me. Lisa was absolutely the most terrifying character I've ever encountered in a game.

2. It's just unbeatably good, and one of my all time favorite games.

Played the living crap out of it!

Resident Evil 2. Its the first PS1 game I ever played and I was only 9 back then. I loved that game to death, and I completed it again a few months ago. I realize I am biased, but its the only game that made me not be able to sleep at night.

I loved that game so much for the atmosphere like you said. I actually didn't know what to expect as I went around corners. Not only that there was always the chance that a Crimson Head could rise, man I hated them things. I'd love Nemesis to featured in a game that can create an atmosphere like that!

Resident Evil 4 because, y'know. It's actually fun to play.

I'll always remember Kendo's Gun Store at the beginning of that game. When the window smashes, man I loved that!

Resident Evil 4 because it came out at a time when I genuinely thought Capcom gave a shit about the franchise.

#11 Posted by TheGreatGuero (9130 posts) -
@Hargreaves93: Oh man, don't get me started on the Crimson Heads. GAAAAH! So yeah, to play it, I basically just played it normally up until I got the grenade launcher (which is after the first or second Crimson Head encounter), then did the glitch to get hundreds of rounds. After that point, every time I opened a door, I'd stand there for a few seconds with the grenade launcher equipped (which for the record, was a 1-hit kill on almost every enemy) and I'd wait and listen. Then slowly move forward. Even with that thing, I was completely terrified out of my mind. Sure, you might say I ruined the game for myself, but uhh... I don't think so. If it wasn't for that glitch, let's face it, I NEVER would have finished that great game.

Resident Evil 4 just did everything right so for me its that.

Yeah man, I never did that glitch but I remember using a guide for it the first time through as I was terrified when I played it. Bare in mind I was only 10 years old haha! Just wish games still gave me sense of scare still!

3 was the first one I actually beat. 5 is my favorite because it is one of the most replayible games ever.

#15 Posted by FilipHolm (667 posts) -

RE2. The first one I played and still my favorite.

#16 Edited by LetsRockBaby (241 posts) -

RE4. While I did play the originals before (didn't beat them, but I sorta liked them), 4 just really hit the spot me, and I always find myself coming back to it.

That is true about 5, I have clocked in over 50 hours into it. I don't know why because it isn't the best game ever but it's hella fun!
#18 Posted by laserbolts (5310 posts) -

Resident evil 4 because it was awesome and I didn't care for any of the other resident evil games.

#19 Posted by MooseyMcMan (10384 posts) -

RE4, because it was so different from the older games, and much more action oriented. RE5 was pretty cool too.

#20 Posted by CptBedlam (4449 posts) -

REmake, closely followed by RE4. Reasons: atmosphere, presentation.

#21 Posted by ZeForgotten (10397 posts) -

2, followed closely by the Remake for the Gamecube, didn't like when they took the games and made them all actiony and not scary anymore. Spin offs are okay like that Operation Raccoon City game, they can be what they want to be but turning the main series into a walk through a park filled with little children and cupcakes made me kinda sad.

Every time you beat it you have something new to play with. ooh I got a gun I'll keep playing. ooh I got a new costume, I'll keep playing. like that but like 15 times.

The JP Dreamcast version of Code Veronica because the graphics were unlike anything I've ever seen at the time especially using the VGA adapter.

#24 Posted by MightyDuck (1494 posts) -

The original is still my favorite...well actually the Director's Cut was the version I had.

I remember printing out strategy guides and walkthroughs for it off of my old dial up modem back then.  I enjoy the other games in the series too, but nothing quite has captured that "B" Movie horror feel that the original had.

#25 Posted by phrali (646 posts) -

4.

because it was the first one without the stupid fixed cameras and tank controls.
then 5 was a giant escort mission with horrible escort-ee AI.

#26 Posted by AjayRaz (12416 posts) -

Resident Evil 2 or 5. i liked 4 a lot, but RE2 had a crazy atmosphere and RE5 is so much fun. i must have put in 100+ hours in that, which is a lot more than what i put into other RE games.

i'd like to say REmake, but i haven't gotten the chance to play it.

#27 Posted by crusader8463 (14412 posts) -

None of them. Never been a fan of the franchise.

#28 Posted by Djratchet (668 posts) -

4. Got me into the series and the horror genre of games in general, which I had been avoiding up until that point. 5 was not nearly as good in my opinion, but it was alright. Buying the HD remake of 4, and getting RE1-3 for free from PS+.

#29 Posted by benjaebe (2783 posts) -

Resident Evil: Outbreak. File 1 was my favorite, but File 2 was good as well. I've yet to play a cooperative game, especially when it comes to survival horror, that was as good as Outbreak was. It had believable playable characters, interesting scenarios, a really well done online mode and just some damn good cooperative mechanics - just stuff as simple as being able to shoulder someone if they're injured so you both move faster.

I really wish they'd explore more of the series because I think it was a game that was ahead of it's time. A re-release would be amazing and a File #3 that isn't a shitty cash-in like Operation SOCOM City would be even better.

#30 Posted by PSNgamesun (394 posts) -

My favorite has to be re4. Because it gave everything I wanted from a game back when it came out, I remember the week I got to play it n finish it. I had played god of war n I thought nothing can top this game nothing n then my sister shows me re4 n I thought it looks good but better than gow no way. I bought a gamecube n played it....15 hours later I was in all of this game. Most games forget about paceing n just concentrate in one area but re4 had it all n I repeat the pacing in this game sets every thing up( the atmosphere, story, ect.) n this re fixed most of the problems the other resident evils had like voice overs, gameplay( smoother controls) n just enhanced them didnt abandon them like puzzles n weird story telling but still telling it in very serious manner. I really liked this game it's one that made the old n dieing formula of resident evil new again.

The original on sega saturn, because I'm crazy. It just charmed me. It's the only series where I progressively disliked every sequel more than the last. I will never understand all the love for 4. Seemed just awful to me. 5 was was the final straw that put me off the franchise forever.

this and this

and most of the people in this thread sicken me but now I guess I know why Capcom stopped making Resi games that actually require you to think and plan ahead.

RE2. It came out in 1998 when i was eleven and some of the best games of all time were coming out so I have very fond and vivid memories of that time in my life. I never played RE1 because I chickened out after that first zombie and had to watch my brother beat it, which was still very enjoyable and memorable. So when RE2 came out I was slightly older and had the balls to make it through Leon's story, then I watched my brother beat the game as Claire and then do both the b-sides. 1998 baby.

#34 Posted by cstrang (2381 posts) -

Resident Evil 4 was spectacular for the time. I sunk so much time into that game, unlocking all the nifty weapons...

#35 Posted by itsjoncharles (75 posts) -

Nemesis is my fave. Not played 4 though, so will change that.

#36 Posted by Giantstalker (1514 posts) -

I've only played the GC remake of RE1, RE4, and RE5. 4 wins by a big margin.

The first one had absolutely atrocious controls and was just an overall frustrating game to try and play, even though it was more successful in terms of atmosphere and general scariness.

4 had great controls, lots of replayability, and traded some of the spooky atmosphere to make a better game. I appreciated that trade, a lot.

5 was a weak re-hash of concepts from 4, I traded it in pretty quickly after buying it.

#37 Edited by Deranged (1837 posts) -

Resident Evil 5 because it has the best co-op I've ever seen. 4 doesn't trail far behind either.

#38 Posted by Marokai (2791 posts) -

I've always really been attached to Resident Evil 3, for whatever reason. I think, in my own weird way, it was my way of appreciating that it came really close to the zombie game I've always been waiting for, but has never been made until Dead Island (which I haven't played yet.)  Since I was young I've always really wanted a wide open world zombie game that treated the subject with a grim and serious attitude. RE3, being in the city, came the closest to that wish of mine.

All of the other Resident Evil games up to that point took place in confined locations; a mansion, a police station, laboratories, etc. RE3 takes place all over the city and doesn't stick to one location for very long. It had alot of variety. It was also the only Resident Evil to involve a crafting system of sorts, and introduced the dodging and quick-turn systems (and I also believe it introduced auto-aim as well) that made the controls more usable.

I also really love Jill Valentine. Even being gay, she's a video game crush, and I adore her in every way. RE3 was all about Jill Valentine being awesome, and I enjoyed that.

Resident Evil 1 on the DS was a very good version of the game that I enjoyed, as well. With the updates to the game, it became a bit more streamlined and enjoyable to a game that was a little rough to deal with, even for fans. Code Veronica is probably my second-favorite RE game. It was the Resident Evil game that made the camera angles actually work well. Being the first Resident Evil game with entirely polygonal environments, the camera was able to swoop around on Claire unlike other RE games.

I actually don't really like 2 much. I'm actually surprised so much that it's one of the most popular and highest selling RE games. It was certainly much more impressive than the first game, but I guess I really just dislike Leon as a character, and never understood the attachment to him from anyone. Similarly, I don't care for 4 much either.

4 is a good game, but as a Resident Evil game it's sort of odd, because even the story has practically nothing to do with anything. The plot was completely separate from anything else in the RE fiction, and Leon himself is actually a bit of an odd character out. He has nothing to do with the story whatsoever aside from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you had changed the main characters' names, there would've been nothing connecting that game to the franchise. I understand people who love RE4 because it was their entrypoint into the series, but it bugs me to no end that the entrypoint to the series for millions of people had absolutely nothing to do with the series.

RE5 swooped in and rescued 4 from being completely irrelevant of the fiction (which admittedly was silly in the first place) and actually felt connected to the series again.

Even though I love Resident Evil and have since I was young, I probably have unpopular opinions regarding favorite games of the series, as you can see. I love 3, I think 2 is decent, and I have serious problems with 4. The popular opinion on those three games is pretty much the exact opposite of what I think.

Resident Evil 5. Only one I know and ever played.

I grew up with an N64 and then got an Xbox. It has been recommended to me that I don't go back and play the old ones expect 4. As they have not aged well.

#40 Posted by CounterShock (420 posts) -

RE4 because it's the funnest to play and I love all the aesthetics and atmosphere. Runner up would probably be RE2, even though I haven't made it that far in that game.

RE3

#42 Edited by Yummylee (21208 posts) -

Resident Evil 2. I'm a complete fanboy for that son'bitch (and RE in general pre RE4) and I always love to defend it. The remake on the Gamecube is also fantastic, though, and stands strong in the No.2 spot. I've actually been meaning to make a list in the order of least to most favourite RE's, though I've been finding it tough to scrounge up the motivation.

#43 Posted by Creamypies (4044 posts) -

Resident Evil 2 for me. Though I did love REmake too.

#44 Posted by advocatefish (355 posts) -

Resident Evil ZERO. First one i played through all of and it was good. Then RE4 because man i could not stop playing that game when it came out.

#45 Posted by Mmmslash (2166 posts) -

Favorite? PFFT, LET'S PUT THIS SHIT IN ORDER

Resident Evil 2
REmake
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 1
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil Gaiden
Resident Evil: Dead Aim
Resident Evil Survivor

I never played either of the Outbreaks online, so I am under-qualified to judge them. I probably missed some, but those are the important ones, as far as I am concerned.

#46 Posted by Yummylee (21208 posts) -

@Mmmslash:

Dudewut: Gaiden over Dead Aim? Dead Aim was admittedly pretty mediocre (though still the best RE gun-light game), but Gaiden was fucking Gaiden. A gameboy shitfest that isn't even canon with the series :o

#47 Posted by Mmmslash (2166 posts) -
@Abyssfull: Gaiden at least had the lolwhat that I love about Resident Evil. Include with that some sign of Barry, a pretty alright rhythm and timing based combat system, and the fact that it was a GBC game, and it's not half bad.

Dead Aim, on the other hand has basically nothing going for it.
#48 Posted by Little_Socrates (5675 posts) -

For me, Resident Evil 4. It was the first one I played, and I still think it has the best level design and gameplay. The original Resident Evil, and its sequels that kept in its style, certainly have their place as well, and I'd definitely pick REmake as the runner-up. Resident Evil 5, while still a good game, is not something I enjoy taken as part of the larger franchise, nor do I have interest in the upcoming games related to it.

I have only ever played Resident Evil: Code Veronica.  I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I never went back to play the others. Watching the Fear Gauntlet episode for Resident Evil has made me want to revisit the franchise though.
