Hey guys, I love me some Giantbomb, but there is only so much they can post in a week that I watch and feel like I can go for some more shenanigans. One such reviewer I have in mind is Angry Joe from youtube. This guy is hilarious. His videos are well thought out, and he gives the score of his reviews with the most honesty I've seen other than Giantbomb. And to hear him rip on games and companies that he don't like is just pure poetry. I can watch his rant on Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 over and over again and still get a laugh out of it.

So what other reviewers do you like in the industry? Would love to hear your guys opinion.

Angry Joe...it really depends on the video. Sometimes he can be a huge prick. And he's not particularly funny either.

Well I guess he can come off that way for some people, but I just see him actually being honest about a game. I mean if it's broken, don't try to sugar coat your review. Tell it like it is. Also I find his videos hilarious, but that could just be a difference in taste of what we define as comedy.

I like the voice of the guy who does the GameTrailers.

Agreed.

I find myself only reading reviews in the last year or so, usually supplemented with a Quick Look. Usually works for me.

#6 Posted by madmanmaple89 (56 posts) - 11 months, 29 days ago

Mark from Classic Game Room. He rules.

#7 Posted by Sooty (6706 posts) - 11 months, 29 days ago

I don't really read reviews anymore, I will look at scores to make sure a game isn't flat out terrible or broken but that's about it. I do read the odd review here and there but it's very rare.

I like the stuff Classicgameroom puts out, also, squirrels.

#8 Posted by MethodMan008 (701 posts) - 11 months, 29 days ago

Angry Joe annoys the shit out me..

I don't really care for reviews as I play what I want, but I do read a lot of them.. Read a lot of Polygon's stuff, GamesRadar, PC Gamer, JoyStiq, CheapAssGamer.. Think that's about it.

I never read reviews, I watch a Quick Look, a GT review, the Giant Bomb star rating and the IGN summery at the bottom of the page.

The GameTrailers reviews are really great and have excellent editing - it's a shame what a cesspool the community for that site is.

I only go their for the reviews and features, I never even look at the comments.

@Hizang: I try to not look but sometimes I do and it's painful. What I like is that sometimes they're actually pretty honest about their reviews and there were a few times when they've given a popular game a lower score because of some inherent issues it had. Most of all I appreciat ethe old-school structure they follow of Story, Gameplay etc..

#13 Posted by Encephalon (911 posts) - 11 months, 29 days ago

Gametrailers, but mostly watch the video highlights of games I never intend to play.

Honestly, I only read GB reviews if they're written by Ryan, Alex or occasionally Patrick.

#14 Posted by BPRJCTX (703 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

Gametrailers is where i get my info on games.

I don't care for their reviews or any other reviews, including GB's, for that matter, but, if you're just looking for video content on games, it's one of the best places out there.

Community really sucks, it's just full of Sony Fanboys and Trolls, but that goes for every major gaming website...

#15 Posted by AndrewB (6873 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

Are we only talking about ones with videos? Giant Bomb is about the only gaming site I visit for that. I'll mention the Angry Video Game Nerd even though he only rarely does a modern video game review, and doesn't really put out a whole lot of new content anymore. His early past stuff was pretty awesome though.

If we're talking about any form of media, I rarely read reviews outside of Giant Bomb, but I definitely listen to opinions in podcast form, with Rebel.FM being tops in my opinion. Love those guys.

Polygon seem to have there shit together. Looking forward to see how they grow.

zero punctuation

This is the only videogame website I visit. I generally just like the personalities on here, the games themselves aren't the draw for me.

#19 Posted by FreakAche (2870 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

I wonder if Angry Joe realizes how ridiculously played out the "edgy", "says what's on his mind", video game reviewing Youtube persona has become at this point.

#20 Posted by Zekhariah (576 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

Tom Chick. I do not take his scoring into account for a purchase (or any reviews in general), but they usually have a bit of a different prospective.

#21 Posted by FilipHolm (608 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

I find myself watching the gametrailers ones. Even though I don't concider them to be very good. IT's got good prodution value and I guess that appeals to people.

Pretty much just Classic Game Room for me. Mark enjoys games of all kinds and doesn't shy away from playing anything. He doesn't add unnecessary stigmas to anything and is relaxed about games. Most of that stuff I couldn't say even about Giant Bomb.

I'm similar. I watch all the quick looks and read the reviews regardless of whether I'm interested in the game or not because I just enjoy the content. On the other hand I have bought games that I'd not heard of previously, such as Super Meat Boy or Limbo, after watching the QL. So I guess it works both ways.
#24 Edited by DallasTheGamer (138 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

The only review-videos I watch is here at giantbomb. I don't really pay attention to reviews anymore. If I like what I see in a game, I'd buy it and try it out. If I don't like it then I guess I was just unlucky.

#25 Posted by PenguinDust (12109 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

Occasionally I'll watch a GameTrailers or Totally Rad Show game review but really I rely mostly on audio podcasts and the Quick Looks here to get a sense of a game's quality.

#26 Posted by falling_fast (1980 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

rockpapershotgun, zero punctuation, and jim sterling's stuff, I guess.

#27 Posted by wjb (784 posts) - 11 months, 27 days ago

I frequent Polygon and Gametrailers, lately. Occasionally Gamespot if VanOrd is reviewing a game I'm on the fence about and I need another opinion.

The Youtube stuff never appealed to me at all. I suppose it's a rule to be "angry" and have shitty goatees if you want to be popular? That seems to be the trend. I enjoy a good rant, but I don't want to listen to the Angry Game Nerd making dumb angry faces and saying stuff like "dick-turd" or whatever while being impressed with himself that he can drink beer legally. Yes, we get it. You like Rolling Rock.

#28 Posted by Clonedzero (2154 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

i like angry joe.

but damn people seem kinda like, judgmental around here huh? relax duders.

#29 Posted by thevigilanteoflove (460 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

Giant Bomb is the only professional site I really use, but there a lot of channels on YouTube that I like to watch. There are some really talented people out there making stuff for YouTube. I like Pete Dorr, Vintage Video Game Geek, AVGN, HVGN, Mark from Classic Game Room, etc.

#30 Posted by Little_Socrates (5440 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

I read reviews from Polygon, Dtoid, and GameSpot occasionally. I don't really watch any other games content though. I prefer podcasts anyways, for the most part.

#31 Posted by SeanFoster (671 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

I enjoy the Weekend Confirmed podcast and the guys on there, specifically Jeff Cannata.

By far the best reviewer in the media (videogame media) , he doesn't give scores, he doesn't go into deep philosical BS that justifies why he doesn't like a particular game mechanic , he admits having nicpicks and adresses how those are his concerns not something wrong with the game , he's pretty funny and entuastic about most games good or bad ones and he likes to use "if you life what you see" wich is better than the regular "I'm a game critic so I know what's good and what's bad" stuff that I dislike so much about game reviewers.

#33 Edited by Phatmac (5263 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

I don't really read or watch reviews. Most of the time I don't think that they help me in any way. So I mostly watch quick looks or look for gameplay of it on youtube to see if I'd like a game or not. I mostly know what games I'm interested for in a year so i don't need reviews most of the time.

Fourthed. I don't even pay all that much attention to reviews, themselves because I mostly make up my own mind about that shit with the help of quicklooks. I mostly look at reviews after I play a game to see where the reviewers and I differed.

#36 Posted by WMWA (1139 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago
@will_leisure You're the same as me then. Polygon is really my only alternate other than GB, and I love Van Ord so I seek his stuff out. I still find myself looking at reviews on IGN though, if only for the score since they tend to get their reviews up first. And if Anthony Gallegos is reviewing a game.
#37 Posted by Lunar_Aura (2780 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

Just CGR and Zero Punctuation really. They're polar opposites of each other while Giant Bomb kinda falls in the middle.

#38 Posted by WOLVERlNE (4 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

I watch Gametrailers.

IGN for laughs, their reviews really suck.

#39 Posted by wjb (784 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

@wmaustin55: Yeah, I'll check out IGN sometimes because they're usually the first out of the gate. Not necessarily a compliment for them, but first as its advantages. Gallegos is cool. As a long-time listener of Rebel FM, I feel obligated to check out his and Arthur's reviews.

#40 Edited by HerbieBug (2635 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

No particular reviewer.  Giantbomb reviews are more valuable to me just because I have a generally good idea of the personal preferences and biases of the guys on staff here.  Usually my game purchasing habits are based on taking a metacritic cross section of all reviews, seeing what people cite as the strengths and weaknesses of the game, then comparing those against the things I want from a game, what I need to be good, and things I don't care about if they happen to be mediocre.

On the topic of gametrailers, I used to watch those a lot but eventually felt burned by their willingness to outright spoil things well beyond the opening sections of the game.  Watch their 360 review of Witcher 2, for instance, they say something like, "the most monumental decision comes at the end of chapter 1..." then shows a clip of part of that decision.  Completely unnecessary spoilers.

I occasionally watch the reviews on Gametrailers. Also Classic Game Room. Lots of Classic Game Room.

#43 Posted by Zacagawea (1326 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

Classic Game Room!

#44 Posted by Butano (1411 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

Other than GB, not much. Zero Punctuation (usually almost always enjoyable, even if I disagree with him), Rock Paper Shotgun, and some of the WTF is.... by Total Biscuit on YouTube.

#45 Posted by jakob187 (20690 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

There are other sites that do game reviews, news, and other things about video games?

Huh.

#46 Posted by MocBucket62 (634 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

Zero Punctuation for sure. I also like Classic Game Room.

#47 Posted by frankfartmouth (907 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

I like Angry Video Game Nerd quite a bit, although the shit jokes and stupid faces get old fast. He's at his best when he just breaks down the game with commentary and video. Angry Joe is OK, but he yells too much and his reviews are usually pretty bland. The difference between those two guys for me is that the Nerd's reviews, although all retro, are very good even without the gimmicks, while Angry Joe's are very ordinary without.

#48 Posted by Viking_Funeral (1075 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

Angry Joe always comes across like he's trying too hard to do that persona. I watch Zero Punctuation, but I never take the reviews all that seriously.

That's... about it. Sometimes I get links to other review sites, but I try not to follow reviews and instead follow word of mouth.

#49 Posted by PhantomGardener (391 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago

I love AngryJoe, also GameTrailers.

#50 Edited by h0lgr (837 posts) - 11 months, 26 days ago
@madmanmaple89: There's something.. soothing and smooth about Classic Game Room.
Mark's damn unique in his way of presenting his reviews. He has an excellent knack for taking the right amount of pause to let gameplay run and just to air his reviews abit, as opposed to GameTrailers where they spit hot fire for 6 straight minutes.
