Let me clarify the title's question.
What video game original soundtrack made you first realize that music put into video games wasn't just for farts and giggles, but was used to invoke real emotion like making you care about the situation on the screen, provide a spine-chilling atmosphere, create an intense competitive moment, or simply provide a charming jingle?
For me it was the theme for Bowser's Castle in Super Mario Bros. for the NES. Creepy music for a creepy place. I mean for a 5 year old with weak constitutions it made my damn hands shake on the controls, haha.
