well if you havent already played em, or want to again, id pick up the remakes of final fantasy 1 and 2 on gba, for your ds, two isnt all thatgreat but 1 is great, and the remakes of 3 and 4 for ds, would be good as well, but if you dont want a remake i would suggest  tales of eternia on psp, or maybe if your looking for a dungeon crawler type i would say final fantasy chrystal chronicles on ds, but from what you said it doesnt seem like your looking for a shorter one with replayability, and of course in the coming months there chrono trigger ds!

do you care if it is a port or not?  the GBA has a bunch of old SNES rpgs you could plug into your ds or you could go with ff tactics or disgaea on the psp if you like the strategy rpg.  there really is a ton of options for you i think.

I recommend getting a DS.

If you thinking why a DS, Letme clear you up on RPG's for DS.

DS has Dual use Screens. DS has more RPG's avalible than the PSP.

Touch screen for the DS. The PSP is a set like a controller.

More compact than the PSP.

I own one myself and its survived for 1year and a half now.

I was going to get a PSP but the PSP is mostly for racing simulaters and Shoot them ups.

Hope this has helped.

Final fantasy tactics : war of the lions and crisis core are both great on the psp

Also the 2 metal gear acid games (not technically rpg's) are good semi rpg/puzzle staple for portables

The DS has a plethora of RPG games, which is why the DS is the way to go, although the PSP doesn't have a bad collection of RPG games itself.

Tons of choices for both systems. Depends on what type of rpg you are looking for. Here are my suggestions:

PSP: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, Tales Of Eternia, Brave Story New Traveler
DS: Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings, The World Ends With You

Pretty much these are probably the best ones you'll find on either handheld.

The DS is better for RPGs. Mainly because the GBA had tons of great RPGs, all of which can be played on the DS. Golden Sun for example is an excellent RPG for the GBA.

DS has Golden Sun 1&2 those are pretty cool.  Tales of Phantasia is also a NA release now.  (You could import Mother 1-3)  And of course Chrono Trigger will be out for the DS soon.  And you can't go wrong with Chrono Trigger.

You should check out The World Ends with you.  The angsty emo vibe really put me off at first, as well as the combat system which bends your mind the first time you try to get everything going, but it gets into its stride quickly.  The story and gameplay are superior to the FF ports that have been released, personally i'm sick of square not updating the old FF's with a proper combat system, turn-based needs to go!

It really depends on how you like your RPGs. The more conventional ones lie on the PSP, while the DS has more unique ones with their own quirks.
