I gotta cast my vote for IX.
What's you favorite PS1 Final Fantasy?
VII. I know, I'm not cool.
EDIT: Actually, FFT is really it. But you left that off. What's the big idea!?

This, Tactics is probably my most-played Final Fantasy game behind 6.
Don't know why, but 9 just never clicked with me. I'm constantly surprised by how much love that game gets.
Yeah tactics by far has the best combat, and the story is pretty awesome for the series with its very political angle.
and agreed on 9. Never enjoyed it.
I personally think a lot of the backlash against VII is unfounded and largely colored by the ways Square has "expanded" on that universe in directions that play up the worse aspects of the game while leaving behind the good.
Mostly, I referring to Cloud and how people think he was the start of brooding "emo" JRPG protagonists. This is false. The actual character who appears in FFVII is upbeat and positive, cracks jokes, and has fun. FFVII retains the thematic elements that people have loved about the franchise since FFIV--corny goofball comedy set against serious story beats--and takes it to the farthest extremes in both directions. While VII had the most serious plot so far with all the Sephiroth business, it it also by far the silliest FF game. I am mostly a fan of the latter part, but I can see why people would be turned off by the former.
I present some evidence for why the Cloud people have in their heads--the character featured in every FFVII related content since the actual PS1 game--is not the protagonist I love.
I'd probably say 8, though I recognize the mechanics were all kinds of fucked up. 9 probably had the best mechanics. But I like 8 a lot for some reason. Probably it was just my first PS1 game.
IX was the best game in the entire series (oh fuck everyone and their precious FF6 for the Super Nintendo - I thought it was boring)
It was a shame that it was the death nail for traditional FF games though...because it didn't sell very well at all. Then we got the very streamlined FF10 and it allllll went to shit.
My first rpg was Pokemon Blue, my second one was Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII is pretty damn great, and I didn't even like Cloud or Sephiroth that much. Reno, Rufus and pretty much most of Shinra were a hell of a lot more interesting than those two. Also, I didn't really care about Aeris dying. It was shocking sure, but yeah, after she forced herself into my party in the Temple of the Ancients, didn't really miss her that much. Basically, I like Final Fantasy VII for vastly different reasons than most others seem to.
VIII and IX were okay, but didn't blow me away like VII did.

I think it's reached the point where liking VII is cool again. Logic: It used to be cool to like VII, therefore it became uncool to like VII, and the cool thing to do was to like VI or VIII or IX or if you're REALLY cool IV. But now that it's uncool to like VII it's actually cool to like VII because liking things that aren't cool is cool.
But really all of them are so so good.
Also IX is my favourite FF, and one of my favourite games ever.
VII was ground breaking.
VIII was super cool in the visuals and character (except for mopey Squall) aspects.
IX is a great combination of solid mechanics, art style and (mostly) great story.
Here is a picture that I took of my popcorn chocolate.
Here is a series of videos that I done did on VII.
I've always enjoyed FF VIII the most of those 3. Can't say I got to far into FF IX. FF VII was great at the time but not my favorite.
7 easily for me. 8 has good production values and some excellent songs but is mostly bad. That combat is garbage and the story is nonsense. 9 seemed fine but I never got far into it.
6 is the best FF of all but as to the PSX titles IX was and always will be my favorite. Truthfully was the last Final Fantasy to actually have fantasy be a focus in the characters and world. VII was excellent of course but what I can't understand is peoples love for VIII? Boring story, even more boring characters and combat was horrible.
Absolutely IX, it is my favorite FF by far after all. It has a fun, throw back story, a rock solid set of characters, and outside of the very last boss battle which comes out of nowhere, the game is pretty close to perfect. Plus it has weird, and mostly stupid, but still completely awesome coop which I've had a lot of fun with over the years.
IX was the only one where I was motivated enough to push through the mid- to late-game rpg-grind to actually finish, so that.
I played some of it again recently and it's totally still cool, but I wish that it displayed in a higher resolution and that the battle transitions were a lot quicker.
IX without a doubt. It was the first PS1 game that I played on my PS2 and loved every minute. Good thing I had that game because there was not much that came out after the PS2 launch in 2000. Wasn't until the Fall of 2001 that it kicked into high gear
Tactics.
Of the three you listed I will vote for VII. IX is excellent but it didn't pull me in quite as much as VII did at the time. VIII I did not care for due to the characters and the draw magic system.
VII is the only JRPG aside from Chrono Trigger that I have played through more than once. I even did the whole golden chocobo/knights of the round stuff and beat the special bonus bosses. I am amazed, looking back on it now, that I devoted so much time to a breeding system that is highly random even when you do everything correctly. It takes a certain type of crazy to repeatedly reload saves in order to get the correct colour of chocobo. O_0
I've gotten used to people like that, at this point it's either just static or a babys cry I hear when I read comments like that.@Apparatus_Unearth said:

So annoying this attitude.
Unless they can actually bring up a good argument for why it's a bad game they're totally worth listening to.
But untill then just picture them wearing a diaper and crying, makes the internet more fun when people said weird shit :P

Yeah I know you're right and I usually do the same... every once in a while I just have to respond.
Cool if people don't like it but c'mon.
The Material system is worthless. Characters have no individual strengths, really, it's just wherever you put your Material is the trait you character adopts. And while the character aspect of FFVII is good, the overall story is so sloppy that by the end it's an incomprehensible mess.
FFVIII is my favorite. But I realize that the Junction system is perhaps needlessly obtuse and that some of the characters' motivations are difficult to identify with. That said, gunblades are still the coolest weapon.
Tactics is the only one that's aged particularly well, every other one has old JRPG issues (note not every PS1 RPG has those issues, just some of them), takes hours and hours to start up, much better beginning of the game compared to the end (particularly IX which has a superb disc 1 and then the rest of the game is garbage). The music and the cutscenes are still pretty good though. I will say the crickets in Final Fantasy VIII make me feel wonderfully nostalgic, more games need crickets.

Is IX the last FF you enjoyed in the past 20 years then? You'd have to go all the way back to FF IV to find one where the characters weren't molded into whatever you wanted them to be.
