When using WASD, what finger do you put on W?

No, I've never heard of anyone doing that. One of the best things about PC gaming is customizing your experience, so if that's how you want to roll then enjoy. But it sounds insane to me.

Middle finger. I usually use QWE and turn with my mouse (for MMOs and what not), since keyboard turning is slower. Aren't your fingers scrunched together when you use your ring finger?

The only finger actually "confined" to its key would be whichever one you stick on W/S duty. The rest of the fingers are free to do whatevs until it's necessary to strafe which, in modern games, is a rarity.

Middle finger. I realized a few weeks ago that WASD is my home group rather than ASDF. I learned to type by typing, and never actually utilized the proper home groups, so WASD just became where my left hand hangs out. My right hand stays on the spacebar (thumb) and enter (pinky).

To OP ... middle finger, what kind of monster are you? To be honest int seemed natural after using the rigth middle finger on the arrow keys (in old school FPS and stuff)

Middle finger for W/S, ring for A, and pointer for D.

Come on now. The middle finger is longest, and the W key is the farthest away. Your index and ring finger naturally rest on the A and D keys, as if through magic. Putting your ring finger on W means you have to hook your middle finger. Why hook when you can rest?

I grew up in the era before WASD. You used the arrow keys for directional movement and had your pinky on the 0 or Enter keys of the num pad and thumb available for shift/ctrl/enter. When the conversion to WASD happened it made sense to keep the up/down directions on the middle finger.

Weird! I guess its comfy if you started that way, but I sure can't imagine playing games like that.

@spunkyhepanda: The way you put it makes sense. I guess I like having my index finger free for other key mappings. I usually map stuff to the f,g,r,t,v (depending on game) and I can type messages to friends without having to re-adjust my hand.

I've always used my middle finger it just felt natural. One of these days I'm gonna have to try my ring finger for fun though.

But yeah, middle finger for W/S. Ring rests on A, index finger on D, thumb on the Spacebar, pinky on Shift. Can hit the most used buttons very easily.
