I thought that it was accepted that GoW was for god of war, and 'gears was for gears of war.

I normally think of Gears, but only because it's been more popular and in the news lately. After God of War 3 comes out, it'll probably switch back

I never really liked to refer to games with initials as it always just confused me, especially when a review or podcast would resort to them but if I had to pick, Gears definitely comes to mind first.

For me its Gears because ive owned and enjoyed both Gears games but ive never owned any of the God of War games (they never really appealed to me but im thinking of picking up Chains of Olympus since its apparently a lot shorter and I want more games for my PSP so Ill maybe give it another shot). Intellectually I know it should be God of War since it came first and was first to use the acronym but I very rarely saw or used it so it never got hooked in my mind.
