I don't remember hearing about this game on any podcast or seeing a video anywhere but Brad has it in his top 10, Justin McElroy has it in his and there was a lot of talk about it during the day 1 deliberations. Did I miss something during a bombcast or did the discussion really come out of nowhere?

It was on one of the "Worth Reading" things Patrick writes, that's where I found it at least.

#3 Posted by RecSpec (3766 posts) -

Today was the first I've heard of it.

#4 Posted by Spoonman671 (4562 posts) -

Feels somewhat zeitgeisty.

#5 Posted by Indiana_Jenkins (381 posts) -

Patrick stole it from Idle Thumbs.

#6 Posted by rachelepithet (1350 posts) -

Never heard anyone ever mention it before today. Whats stranger is that it ended up being so universally loved by the group, beating out many other games they raved about this year.

#7 Posted by JoeyRavn (4949 posts) -

The game is damn good, even in a non-ironic way. It starts by subverting every preconception you may have about it, and then it starts throwing the most random, yet completely recognizable, shit at you. It completely accomplishes everything it set out to accomplish.

@Indiana_Jenkins: Oh yeah? Did Idle Thumbs have exclusive rights to play and/or like it? Give me a fucking break.

#9 Posted by Daneian (1208 posts) -

Idle Thumbs talked about it like a month ago.

#10 Posted by FoolishChaos (431 posts) -

Just played through it, and I can see why they didn't really say much about it on the podcasts (did they even mention it?). Its hard to talk about it without giving away too much

#11 Posted by MooseyMcMan (10510 posts) -

I never heard of it until today.

I just played it, and... yeah.

I messed around with it up to the text adventure part before closing it. Makes sad to think that beat out any real game.

..... It beating out other games for OTHER PEOPLE besides you makes you sad? :(

How does that affect you? Why cry over how others 'spill' their drinks? :P

#15 Posted by JackSukeru (5906 posts) -

I played it a few weeks ago, but I never got out of eating bugs and installing/uninstalling lockon. After Brad said what you could do on the Bombcast I went back and played through it all. Neat.

More than anything it made me want to play some decently straightforward text adventures, it's been many years since I played one of those.

And it's no less a "real" game than any other. Just because it's a simplistic flash game doesn't make it less worthy of praise.

I saw somebody casting it on twitch a few weeks ago. It looked crazy.

#18 Posted by Video_Game_King (36054 posts) -

I'm more confused as to why people love it as much as they do. I mean, it doesn't teach fractions so much as it references them. Is it one of those Internet things? Like "it's random, therefore I love it"?

Did you grow up with the MECC-style edutainment games? That's a big part of it.

i first heard about it from the Besties (Nov 16th) dismissed it at the time as i do with most of the deep indie and/or mobile games they mention. Played it today after GB's mentioning of it on the podcast so many times...was amusing, but i guess the build up around it kind of deluded it for me.

#21 Posted by Spoonman671 (4562 posts) -

I finished it. It was stupid. Stop making it out to be something special.

#22 Posted by TheHT (10906 posts) -

i only heard about it today too. saw it on the best moment and also time belt man's list and played through it.

it's pretty nuts but not much more than a funny little flash thing. i can see how finding all of that crazy shit out by yourself would be a lot more satisfying, but i went into it with the buzzwords "going underwater", "warp drive" and "dragon" in my head so i was fully expecting the crazy.

#23 Posted by BaconGames (3296 posts) -

It was neat as a novelty flash game but yeah I think it's only getting a mention right now because it's just caught on around the office. I have a feeling they're mentioning it now for that reason and to suggest people check it out. Context is everything with this one, especially if one looks back at the podcasts and videos themselves. I'm not a huge fan of the fact that it's being praised like it's anything other than what it is (at least that's how I've taken it) but I'll take two and pass with this one and let it slide...I guess.

No one's crying... I just think that stupid little flash games shouldn't be up for consideration against games that dozens if not hundreds of people put years of their life into working on. I really couldn't care less if they think it's better or not, but it's a different class of game that shouldn't be in there with the rest.

Does that make Dust garbage because only one person worked on that?

no, he worked on it a long time.

Binding of Isaac had only like 2 dudes and was done in 3 months so that's probably crap. As is Hotline Miami.

Frog racism the real social topic of 2012

#32 Posted by VisariLoyalist (2990 posts) -

it's pretty amazing I got stuck on the text adventure part

#33 Posted by MiniPato (2721 posts) -

I guess if I knew nothing about Frog Fractions, it might've been mindblowing. Then again, maybe not. It just seems like any other flash game I might find on like Newgrounds. Use internet more people. There are TONS of flash games with crazy weird non sequiter shit in them. Unless something reeeeaaaally crazy happens after the text adventure part.

#34 Posted by Zuldim (288 posts) -

I don't know where it came from, but I paused the podcast to go play it, and I thought it was awesome for most of the reasons they said on the podcast. It was great.

#35 Posted by ajamafalous (11862 posts) -

I saw John T. Drake tweet about it a month or two ago.

I still don't think it holds any merit being on a top 10 list, but whatever.

#36 Posted by Red (5994 posts) -

I'd also nominate the Trial of Froggy for best game sequence of 2012.

#37 Posted by Fascismo (117 posts) -

I stopped the podcast to play it before I heard too much about it, and was pleasantly surprised. Literally fell out of my chair during the parody of the West Wing title sequence.

Super Meat Boy was 2 dudes. 3 if you count the soundtrack. Terrible game, I guess. (Still one of the best platformers ever.)

Consequently, Duke Nukem Forever is the greatest game ever made.

Played it after the bombsquad mentioned it; wasn't too amused. I don't know if it's because I don't have the nostalgia needed to like this game, or it is me just being numb to random flash games. Whatever it is, it's their GOTY awards so they could nominate whatever they want.

I played a bit of it today and was skeptical but man it didn't disappoint in the bat shit crazy department. I like these odd additions, if they always picked the big name games it would be boring as all hell. Its not as if these lists matter anyways, there just for fun.

#48 Posted by JasonR86 (9609 posts) -

I played it and it was a nice diversion. They were making it out to be this incredible thing that it simply isn't. But to each their own I guess.

I just finished it.

It was like sitting next to the kid who keeps poking you in the ribs and quoting Silence of the Lambs and expecting you to laugh.

Granted, the kid's actually very intelligent, but he tries too hard. Or maybe he doesn't try enough.
