Which do you prefer?
ApplesOranges
" I agree with Beach Thunder, they aren't comparable apart from the fact they are both a genre of game, Make a new poll that isn't redundant. "
Humans can compare anything, are you telling me you don't know if you like oranges or apples more? I can tell you easily i prefer apples just as i prefer single player RPG's
The question isn't which is better it's which you like more
I'd go with the Shooter personally. I like interacting with others online, instead of RPG's.
Then again, it would depend on the RPG ;)
Neither.
Online third person shooters. Typically one life to live type of game, lets you use your noodle a bit.
Well I am playing three single-player RPGs right now and 1 FPS off-line, so I think you can guess my preference.
" I agree with Beach Thunder, they aren't comparable apart from the fact they are both a genre of game, Make a new poll that isn't redundant. "well usually people make decisions to buy/play rpg's or online shooters more than the other. These types of games or the most relevant in our industry so i chose these two. I prefer to settle into an RPG by my self; it really is the only type of game that gives me that "magic" and immersive feel
FPSs are usually very "meh" for me with some exceptions, but RPGs can be either amazingly awesome or terribly boring. so with both of these genres it really just depends on the game, but i wouldn't put either among my favorite genres
" @Tennmuerti: but you can only play one game at a time. say there were two games, one of each type. which would you boot up to play in normal scenarios? "Depends on what the mood strikes me when I come home off work. That's the normal scenario for me.

My experiences with online gaming were great during the early- and mid-90s. But Xbox Live has ruined online gaming for me. The service is great, don't get me wrong, but I generally don't like the attitude you find there. So I tend to prefer single-player RPGs.
Yeah I can only stand voice chat if i'm playing with friends. Otherwise it's incredibly annoying with someone who thinks they're so pro that they trash talk people, even their own team-mates.
Single Player, without a doubt. I have played a few MMO's, but I would much rather play on my own, at my pace, and usually Single Player RPG's have a better story which is super important for me.
RPGs are far more satisfying and memorable.
online shooters just get me through the time between RPGs.
Single player shooter. Some of the greatest games of all time are single player shooters; multiplayer shooters are fun but they don't quite hold the same water for me as a 15-hour atmospheric single player shooter with a decent story.
We really need more of those.
Still, I prefer a good single player game over a good multiplayer one because getting together a group of sixteen or so decent, cooperative people isn't really easy, and finding sixteen people that you personally know that are willing to play the same game on the same night for a few hours is even harder. So, by virtue of a better general experience, a single player RPG gets my vote. A multiplayer shooter with a good group of people is a pretty good experience, though, and shouldn't be missed.
However, it really depends on the RPG. I'm only engaged by the talking and cheesy combat of RPG's for so long, and it's usually less time than an RPG expects me to put into it. Bring along more Deus Ex's or Fallout 3's, more games that mix RPG and FPS properly.
