OK, so, there are two titles that are coming out next year that rely heavily on the immersion of the player into the game's world, story, atmosphere and characters. I'm talking about Alan Wake and Heavy Rain. Both of them look to have amazing storytelling elements with very detailed settings.
HEAVY RAIN:
Based on what we've seen so far about Heavy Rain, it looks to borrow much Quantic Dream's earlier title, Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit elsewhere than NA). A cinematic adventure which has your characters completing some mundane, some not-so mundane tasks like putting on clothes or getting food. One thing I found about IP was that sometimes I just was bored of the whole deal, but overall they did make it work very well. They look to have amped that up in Heavy Rain, where is some videos I've seen when you need to make a quick decision, the options are floating round your head and are very jittery - trying to physically convey urgence and possibly confusion. Things like that make the game look so awesome. And you know the story is going to be complicated as hell.
ALAN WAKE:
But then we have Alan Wake, a game that has been in development for maybe... 5-6 years now? It was first unveiled at E3 2005 and it already had quite a bit of environments done, so one would assume there would have been at least 6 or 7 months onto that. The reason why Alan Wake looks so gripping to me is because it reminds me so much of one of my all time favorite games, Silent Hill 2. Bright Falls could very well be the new Silent Hill. The reason I say this is because even now before the game is released, we know that tragedy will strike Alan while he is in Bright Falls searching for his love. It has something to do with his writings, as is a writer, so you know this game is going to be an absolute mindfuck just like Silent Hill 2 was and still is.
As for me, I'm going to have to say that Alan Wake is up on my lists. I mean, the game has been in development for 5-6 years, and last year they decided, when the game was nearly done, to redo all the facial animations just to give it more life. With a developer that is that dedicated, who knows what will happen. But the same can also be said of Quantic Dream. I just am really loving the bleak look of Bright Falls, the gameplay that uses light as a form of defense, and Alan himself looks to have great potential to be an awesome character. Plus, the developers have made us note that fact that his name is A. Wake... so it's gonna be messed up! I didn't pick Heavy Rain because, well... while the content it deals with will be heavy (pardon the pun), the gameplay may be kind of mundane, just like IP. But that's not all a bad thing, only sometimes I found myself kinda bored by that style of game.
I'l probably be getting both, but basically I'm more excited for Alan Wake.
What are your guy's thoughts on these two emotionally-heavy games coming next year?
Which immersive game are you most excited for in 2010?
To tell you the truth, ever since Alan Wake was announced, I have been following it deeply. So I am particularly following it
Dead Space 2. The first Dead Space is hands down the most immersive game I've ever played, and judging by their footage, neither Heavy Rain nor Alan Wake will come anywhere close to it.
Between those two though, I definitely think Alan Wake is going to be more immersive. Heavy Rain is is basically a series of QTEs, each of which gives you a couple of options. Does that make for a good game? Maybe. Does it make for an immersive game? I really, really doubt it.
I only really put these two because they seem like the more realistic type of game. It's kind of what I meant by "Immersion", kinda like in relation to reality. While Bioshock 2 looks to be immersive, I meant it in a different way that only Alan Wake and Heavy Rain look to have so far." @Whisperkill said:
" Erm, Bioshock 2 "Yea, this. Why only two options? "
I hope you understand what I mean, I'm not putting Bioshock 2 down or anything.

I hugely beg to differ, but ok. Whatever you say :P Like Icemael said you obviously haven't seen much of the game. At all." @xyzygy said:

alan wake is exactly like alone in the dark expect in a different setting and it uses a over the shoulder view for aiming instead of the terrible 1st person view that alone in the dark had.
-_-
After hearing that Heavy rain uses the shoulder buttons for movement I've gotten a little worried about it (is this true or something some idiot made up?)
Alan wake was probably one of the most impressive things at E3 the light effect and atmosphere in that demo looked awesome

- Different setting.
- Different story.
- Different combat.
Mass Effect 2 :)
It'll have the story, dialogue, character development and gameplay.
Neither Heavy Rain or Alan Wake appeal to me at all.
