I'm talking about the actors frantically pressing buttons and moving the sticks on a controller in no logical manner. It bugs the crap out of me...
Who else hates how movies depict video game playing?
Same difference with actors pretending to play musical instruments.
The reality tends to be more like in Shaun of the Dead where ya just look like a slumped over sack'a potatoes on the coach which sells the image "we're wasting our lives" more then "we're playing the hell outta some vid'ja game action".
My brain literally hurt after watching that. I... I... I don't know what part of that offends me more..."
"
I was pretty excited when I realized what they were playing.
40 Year Old Virgin is one of the worst perpetrators of this that comes to mind. They were playing Mortal Kombat Deception or Deadly Alliance or w/e and just mashing sticks like mad, and one was using an N64 controller iirc.
This thread reminds me of this thread.
Jesus H. I love how they added overlays like "You died, Play Again" apparently these amazing detectives didn't know how to rewind in PoP"
"
It kinda bugs me, somewhat because it just seems stupid. I think we're living in an age where a sizable number of people watching movies are going to know that video games aren't mad competitions to push as many buttons on a controller in as short a time as possible, why depict it like that?
I love how even in the late 90's they still depicted video games with the sound effects from the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man.
" http://www.screened.com/obvious-videogame-fakery/262-76/ Heres the list!! "If I remember correctly they ACTUALLY played the snes in The Wrestler.
Compare it to the way they use a wheel when driving a car. Most actors drive cars like they were fucking go-karts.
God, that was hard to watch.. Yeah, above average teenage chick! Pound that A button while the character on screen.. squats.

I think it was supposed to be an NES game. But anyway, yes, they actually made that game from scratch to look, sound and play like an NES game." @Testing said:

I made a short film that had a scene with one of my friends randomly pressing buttons on a gamecube controller while Street Fighter 4 sounds came out of some unseen glowing light source. So I'm guilty of this.

He hasn't been laid! And hes old! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I actually find it funny when you see the actor just mashing random buttons and going "Almost got the last boss" and then you see a clip of the screen and it's like Killzone 2 or Halo 3 being played online
Trust me, its the same for every other aspect in movie and TV.
Imagine you knew shit about forensics.
Imagine you knew shit about historical clothing or weaponry.
Imagine you knew shit about mechanics and motors.
Imagine you knew shit about horses.
Imagine you knew shit about finance.
Imagine you knew shit about mathematics.
Imagine you knew shit about chemistry, biology or any other given natural science.
Everything in popular media is dumbed down to SOME degree, some things less, most things more. You just happen to notice it when it comes to videogames, but they are not treated worse than other aspects and topics.

Yeah, I've often wondered why they couldn't just have them actually be playing a game or something. Or get people that actually know how games are played.
What irritates me a bit is when they will show something like Mario Kart on the television in a movie or television show, but the person playing it is playing it with a Xbox 360 controller on his/her "GameStation 360". In the movie Doom, it annoyed me that they were in the future yet their hand-held video game system was straight out of the 1980's, but that movie was shit anyway so.....
I find it annoying that games always have "levels", even the shooters.
"I'm only on level 5." *looks at game* *sees Halo*
And that PoP video, by Odin that PoP video. I loved the cheap text overlay.
