I hopped on the Giant Bomb train last year shortly after the Double Fine Happy Action Theatre Quick Look came out, and since then subscribed. While I'm sad to see Dave go, I have one question: Who is Matt Rorie?

Clearly he is of some importance, as people are really excited about him being hired full-time, but during my stay here I haven't heard much about him...

Duders, can you help me out here, I'm curious!

He used to work on Screened.com with Alex which was owned by Whiskey Media who also funded Giantbomb. Also where did Dave go, and when was Rorie hired? When did I miss this news?

Dave made a announcement late last night:

He's a former Gamespot employee like the rest of the staff (minus Patrick). He's the Boss of Bosses.

Dave doesn't work at Giant Bomb anymore. The day he went on vacation to spend time with his newborn was actually his last day and Rorie took his place.

@purplemoustache: Rorie can be summed up in a nice bullet list.

  • Is a cool duder
  • Sings the Star Trek Enterprise theme
  • Likes Puppies
  • At one point reviewed movies with Alex
  • Plays a lot of MMOs
  • Feels Ryan Davis whenever possible.

Who is Matt Rorie?

A puppy enthusiast, an alcohol devotee, and caresser of men.

He used to write game guides for Gamespot back when Jeff, Ryan, and Brad still worked there. He went on to work at Obsidian for a little bit before moving on to Screened. After the buyout of Whiskey, he moved on to work at Gamespy for a few months before finally being hired by Giant Bomb.

He really likes puppies, Emma Stone, and is known to sing the first two lines of the Star Trek: Enterprise theme song constantly. He also likes to touch Ryan's hand.

you're Matt Rorie

@purplemoustache: Given that you're a paid subscriber, you have access to the archives. If you go to the subscriber videos section, and go WAY BACK to anything labeled a "Whiskey Media Happy Hour", you can get a look at his personality, at the very least. Or find the Dark Souls Quick Look in the Quick Look video section.

@milkman: I can't tell if that's mildly complimentary or absolutely endearing...

Everything that needed to be said has been said.

Also hooray for Rorie!

To me Matt Rorie is a puppy loving Dark Souls review machine.

  • Feels Ryan Davis whenever possible.

As a matter of fact, he can be summed up in a nicer bullet list:

Trivia

  • Brian Ekberg once opined that Matt had an uncanny resemblance to Bill Rizer.
  • Matt has his own photo blog, Properly Petting Puppies, in which he takes pictures of puppies that he encountered and petted.
  • His porn name would be Rock Diesel.
  • He knows a thing or two about Dungeons and Dragons.
  • Really doesn't like the film "Grown Ups".
  • He hates children but hates teenagers the most.
  • He is pro-nudity.
  • His favorite breed of dog is the French Bulldog.
  • He majored in Physics at Virginia Tech for some years before switching to English.
  • Has spent $800 on the arcade version of San Francisco Rush 2049.
  • Incapable of pronouncing the name "Edgar". He inexplicably pronounces it "Edjer". He once claimed he would often purposely pronounce words wrong to bother Alex. Alex has chided him several times for his pronunciation, so it's possible this is the case.
  • His dance arsenal consists of one move.
  • Is not afraid of shaking babies.
  • Finds Patrick Wilson to be quite attractive. (In a non-gay way of course.)
  • Valiantly fought the Undead during the Dark Souls Quicklook.
  • He may or may not look at granny porn in his spare time.
  • He is probably the only one in the office who hates Mondays.
  • Before he worked at Gamespot, he didn't drink.
  • He hates Antonio Banderas in basically everything he has been in.
  • One time in middle school he lost $5. He cried.
  • Has admitted that he is a horrible person.
  • Was 27 when he learned to drive.
  • He likes seeing children get murdered in movies.

Quotes

  • "I think humans should lick each other for cleaning."
  • "Why am I erect? I don't know."
  • "Oh shitcock!"
  • "My family can fuck off for all I care."
  • "Hey look it's an Ewok, it's a Jawa, it's a pineapple."
  • "I admire movies where children get hurt...if I was gonna make a movie it would be nothing but kids getting murdered"

what is Matt Rorie, more like

#20 Edited by Winternet (8035 posts) -

Boss of Bosses and puppy enthusiast. He also worked on Alpha Protocol (or maybe more accurately, he worked on Obsidian while they were making Alpha Protocol) so +1 bonus for that.

#21 Edited by myketuna (1730 posts) -

He's an interesting man who adores puppies, hates Macs, loves to use "You're a [insert subject of conversation here]!" as a retort, and the only living being on this Earth that could hope to rival my love for Emma Stone. I admire him for that last one.

He has an extensive body of work at both GameSpot and Screened. The man was a machine when Screened was in transition limbo and basically ran it alone. He also took a swing on the developer side with Obsidian as a PR dude.

Wow. Did not expect this much of an outpour of a response!

Thanks guys!

#24 Posted by Rorie (3169 posts) -

Man, I was so, so tired on that podcast when I said that stuff about kids. I mean, I despise children, but I don't really want to see them murdered. Maybe.

The internet, where your words live forever! I'm just glad I got to record another podcast after that so that that wasn't the last one on Screened.

I know I already posted, but probably the quickest summary I can give is that he is right on par with the best of the Giant Bomb guys in terms of being a likeable dude with a lot of personality, and a considerable amount of personal experience and knowledge within games journalism.

No fucking clue either, but apparently people like him.

#29 Posted by KaneRobot (1781 posts) -

During the Dog Football QL, Rorie says he's colorblind. If true, this puts Giant Bomb in the record books as the most colorblind staff in any industry. Probably.

#30 Edited by Dagbiker (6978 posts) -

He also has the lowest alcohol tolerance next to Karen Snider, who I assume is still Fungineer because she has not made a forum post, nor has she ever taken a vacation day, because all days are vacation days for Karen.

He was also the best dressed at whisky media, and perhaps in all of california.

#31 Posted by kristov_romanov (464 posts) -

@dagbiker: Oh, you just made me realize that we may never hear Karen's excited screeches ever again, now that Dave has left.... I am sad.

Ironically my favorite Matt Rorie moment isn't even Giantbomb related. The 2011 Octoberkast on Tested where Rorie came in at like 4am with sunglasses drunk after partying all night with random people was THE BEST.

Though it should also be reiterated that Rorie's position at Giant Bomb/Comic Vine isn't editorial in nature. He'll contribute to videos here and there and maybe write-up something every once in a while, but he's not a member of the editorial staff and will be splitting time between GB and CV.

Man, that purple shirt is the best.

He also worked on Alpha Protocol, most underrated game of 2010.

@dylabaloo: I have every achievement in Alpha Protocol and love it without reservation. But it is a properly rated game.

People are STILL giving Jeff shit for "anime is for jerks." I think its safe to say you'll never live that one down.

Underrated may be the wrong word, underplayed. More people need to play it. It handles player agency and dialogue so well. It also totally nails that spy/espionage setting and atmosphere.

And easily the funniest and most likeable of the Whiskey Bunch.

There should be a CNN News-like series of video features detailing "Who is Matt Rorie?" Have the whole thing shot similar to how the 24-hour news channels cover the Boston Bombers.

Up next, we have the first Facebook photos to emerge after Matt Rorie's hire. Here is a picture of him... hugging a puppy. Here is another picture of Matt Rorie coming from twitter of him... hugging another puppy.

Man i could watch all those right now, arguably the Best Video content on the old Whiskey media sites, but it will just make me sad that Screened is just the husk of the site it once was.

Mmmmmhm. I've said it before, and by my God given right I shall say it again!.. Screened was a better Movies site than Giant Bomb is a video games siteOHFUCKSHITB00MWAGGAWAGGA.

I never really got into the forums side, though. Probably because I'm not nearly as much a movies enthusiast as I am games -- though I wish I was. But even still, I loved all the content put out and I still enjoy rewatching them to this day. Same with their reviews, and I still especially enjoy rereading a lot of Alex's scathing 0 star reviews.

I was on the fence the entire game. I wasn't enjoying playing it at all but the story had me somewhat interested. I didn't like the characters that much. When I got to the end of the game I ended up hating it and felt I made a mistake spending the $15 I did on it.
