I don't like Half-Life 2!
They all said I was crazy! But it's not just me! Its not!

Solid Snake because he is the greatest bad ass of all time.
look at us all name our favorite video game character and not give any reason as to why he's the ultimate protagonist
This. Kratos is such a fun character to play as.Kratos, because he's Kratos. Never in the history of gaming has another character in terms of his personality and actions fitted perfectly with his games design. He is far from likeable as a person but as a character I find him infinitely entertaining.
Perhaps if their is ever a game with a character I can relate to, empathize with and admire beyond a simple state of entertainment they will take his place for me.
I really liked Neku from The World Ends With You I don't quite know why but I thought he was a good protagonist and some sort of a departure form the typical Square protagonist. Then again I absolutely adored that game and am so excited for those characters being in Kingdom hearts:3D.
But if not him probably my Commander Shepard, he is awesome even if the ending to his tale wasn't exactly perfect we'll see how that's rectified come Tuesday, or Link he is the ultimate fulfillment of childhood adventure fantasies.

@Tarsier: Nah! if anything I'd looooooooooooooooooooooove to like Half-Life 2! I'd love to be stoked about another Half-Life!
No such luck I'm afraid.
youd love it, but your ego and bias is in the way.
That and the game created the modern model for roller-coaster action campaigns, reducing gameplay options and negating exploration for the genre.

I think Halk-Life looks eh. I don't have a PC so I can't ever play it but I watched the walkthroughs on YouTube and thought "Eh."
My vote is a draw between Nathan Drake because he's perfect, Cole Mcgrath because his superpowers, and Isaac Clarke because he's a badass alien killer who is an engineer on the side.
Solid Snake, the man gets better with age and is courteous enough to take a back seat in his own games.

I can see where you'd say that, but the game is a lot better when played by yourself, not when seen played.
Also, if you have an Xbox or a 360 or a PS3, you can play it. The Orange Box is available for the latter two and Half-Life 2 got ported to the Xbox. The original Half-Life also got a PS2 port.

My post is kind of eh. I should rewrite my thoughts about the game.
I can see why people love it, no doubt. Great atmoshphere/environments, good characters and story so I understand all the love. I just don't see it as a holy grail of gaming like most. I mean, I'd play it and I'll probably like it, but I won't love it. Especially now since I'm really tired of FPS games. I would buy Half-Life 3 because you don't leave a cliffhanger like in Episode 2 like that for what, 7 years now? I'm kind of excited to know what happens next, but I'm not all lovey dovey for the games like everyone.
Also, I know of The Orange Box (I have a PS3) but I won't feel compelled to play the game after seeing it played through already. Plus, I have a big backlog that's only getting bigger.
Is the right answer. Not snake but Big Boss.Big Boss, MGS3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker his enthusiasm and naivety about box technology are really something I could listen to a billion times over.
If I'm choosing based on my favorite game then my answer would have to be Alpha One from Freespace: The Great War. Why, because he helped (key figure) defeat the most powerful and most advanced alien race (the Shvians) and didn't even want all the glory for himself. He was simply doing his job.
Outside of that, I guess I'll go with the Boss from Saints Row the third. My reasoning being that if I'm asked who's the best videogame character then he/she fits best. I'm mean the Boss reeks (in a great way) with videogame. Other than that my response would be the Exile from Knights of the Old Republic 2. As others have all ready said the exile tore a hole in the force and was believed by many to represent the death of the force.
