Who do you think could make a new console and have it compete with sony, microsoft and nintendo ?
Who should make a new console next ?
Google is the only one I could see doing this, only because they want to dominate everything. i was gonna say Apple, but they aren't very supportive of gaming from what I've seen.
Didn't someone at EA a few years back talk about possibly making a console?
Anyway, I think Apple is obvious answer. Although I really don't think there's enough room a fourth.
Yeah I think the only Apple is going to get into the home console market is if they sell you something else, like the next rumored version of the AppleTV, that has the ability to run apps (and therefore games). Kind of like the way they sell you a phone that plays games. The game playing isn't sold as its primary function but just like on the iPhone it could take off.
Ugh and so many people are going to post about the Pippin.
I don't think anyone besides Microsoft and Sony has the dev toolchain and clout at this point to produce a piece of hardware and software delivery channel that can compete. Nintendo is just hanging on by their handheld sales. I don't see them doing too well as consoles get more complicated and powerful.
What I would like to see is a shift towards a more open platform in the next batch of consoles. That's directly opposite of the current trend in computing though. Lock it down, lock em in, protect the revenue stream, and jack up the prices. I don't think Microsoft and the game publishers will be happy until you pay every time you hit the power button.
From the back of my mind, the only real new competitor that can jump into the console war is Apple, but as someone else said about their support for games, its probably not likely. They've also tried making the Pippin and that... that thing is almost unheard of, it was that much of a failure. Seeing how we're getting all of this motion control technology, I can see Apple jumping in smoothly since they're all about "innovation" and being new and shit.
Someone else mentioned Google and I haven't considered that yet. Its sounds like a mismatch, but hey, Google is awesome. If they begin to export their 1 gigabit network; they could hold a monopoly on that technology in the United States and use it for their console. You know how much possibility there would be for a console like that?
" I don't think anyone besides Microsoft and Sony has the dev toolchain and clout at this point to produce a piece of hardware and software delivery channel that can compete. I'm pretty sure the DSi XL was more expensive than the Wii when it released." I don't know what newcomers could make a competitive console- but out of the big three, Nintendo need to release a new one soon, because it's gonna be really weird when their handheld is more expensive than their console. "
[EDIT] Never mind, it wasn't. But the 3DS approximates the power of the Wii, has 3D technology without glasses combined with the ability to take 3D pictures and is a portable. I'm sure it will sell ridiculously even if it's priced way higher than the Wii.
Apple is the only company that comes to mind that could actually pull it off.
Other than that, maaaaaaaaybe Valve?
" @TooWalrus said:I'm pretty sure it was 189.99... What's a Wii going for now days? The black motion plus bundle is still $200 I think, but you can get the white ones cheap. Yeah man, that's super weird, to me, anyway." Well, OnLive is out there right now. I suspect that will gain some momentum somewhere along the line - or another company will make something similar that works in a more efficient manner.

"Google is more about the web side of stuff, not hardware. They're putting alot of resources into the social games market.

" Apple, and the console will suck. "Ah. Only a bitter PC user would say such a thing. But your opinion is adorable, if totally troll-like.

I can dig opinions. But that statement just sounds like something to annoy Apple users. But whatever." @sofacitysweetheart said:

" @Axxol: Somehow you're not convincing me with your fragmented responses. "Good for you!
Why would anyone want another console? No one should make a console next. I think we should drop it down to one or two consoles next generation so we aren't as fucked over by shady deals resulting in exclusives for a system you might not have because that particular greedy piece of shit corporation wanted it more.
A console is just a fucking box that plays games. It has no inherent entertainment value. In a perfect world there'd just be games, and all the necessary evils required to play them (which console manufacturers and publishers are) can go to fucking hell.
Fanboyism over consoles makes me nauseaus. Support the creative people actually making games instead of praising the fat bastards that are just out to take your money.
