is it that big of a threshold to cross, especially when its native to the current generation?

#2 Posted by BraveToaster (12590 posts) -

I don't have the answer, but is HD really that important for the site?

#3 Posted by Blueman (753 posts) -

Probably a bandwith issue.

Giantbombs Harmony isn't quite Despair enough.

@Father_Vice: Is it that big of an issue, especially when youtube videos on lower quality have hundreds of millions of views on a smaller resolution stretched across the screen?

It'll be a part of the subscription model they'll be releasing later this year.

Most likely this.  HD videos can be fairly large especially for 30min videos.

Maybe partially because they are such a small site, but then it will be over come by this:

Giant Bomb videos aren't in HD cause I said so.

#10 Posted by wefwefasdf (6729 posts) -

I can't wait until they are. Seeing Giant Bomb goodness in HD will make it even better.

#11 Posted by CitizenKane (10501 posts) -

It's a storage and bandwidth issue.  They capture video in 720p, but they have to compress it down when uploading it onto the site.

#12 Posted by alternate (2655 posts) -

Everything costs more - cameras, bandwidth, space on the servers and the P2 cards for the cameras, more compressors to take up the extra work.  I am not even sure the capture setup will do above 720 anyway so that would be the hard limit on quicklooks etc.

I still download the 700k videos anyway to save my own bandwidth - it is more than adequate to get a taste of what is on show.

I see what you did there

Shit is expensive.

#15 Posted by TaliciaDragonsong (8698 posts) -

We already have a crysis forum right? That's enough HD talk for me.

It really wouldn't add much, besides costs for the site, which may in turn get to us, one way or another.
So, I say keep it the way it is, check back in a few years when we have gaming build into our brain.

With the amazing content GiantBomb delivers, I couldn't care less about HD.

#17 Posted by AlisterCat (5398 posts) -
@Father_Vice:  a 20 minute TV episode in 720p HD is about 500MB. That is a hell of a lot of data to stream. I would settle for slightly higher quality rather than a HD resolution.

It's probably because of the length of the content. A lot of the videos on this site are well above 30-45 minutes. Take those, and put them in HD, and you're going through a ton of bandwidth.

#19 Posted by Vinny_Says (5630 posts) -
@rjayb89: where does everyone keep on coming up with "subscription models"?
#20 Posted by Chaoticpattern (20 posts) -

Content delivery is indeed a very expensive service to offer; especially if it's in 720p+ and having average video length of about 20 minutes. Not only would GB/Whisky Media have to shell more for bandwidth, they'd also need to have the hardware to support it; bigger, faster servers and fatter pipes.

The alternative solution is to look at CDN through something like Akamai (what Youtube uses) through EdgeControl and perhaps RTMP for video streaming.

Either case, it'll cost a lot more with fairly minor returns. I would prefer GB put that money towards even more GB-esque shenanigans.

By the way, I would pay to watch some sort of wresting cross-over between Giant Bomb v.s. Tested v.s. Screened; akin to something like Capcom v.s. Marvel.

the vid player struggles enough with SD video

#22 Posted by Dany (7886 posts) -

Even if they don't offer higher resolution videos, they should at least support higher quality vids

#23 Posted by ThePhantomnaut (6067 posts) -

640x360 at 1500kbps works just fine for most videos.

#24 Posted by MHumphreys89 (703 posts) -

Costs money to upload HD videos, you probably won't see Giant Bomb upload high definition content unless it's paid for by a subscription service.

#25 Posted by NeoNightmareX (59 posts) -

They aren't supporting HD because all of their resources are going into making the videos 3D.

#26 Posted by rjayb89 (7713 posts) -
@blacklabeldomm: To be honest, I don't really know.  However, if they did ever offer HD video for the site(s), I'd be down for it considering the amount of time I spend on this site just watching videos.  What I think might have people suspicious of a subscription model is some announcement Whiskey Media (?) will be making on 9/9.  Obviously, I'm not in the know or if those numbers really mean anything, but we'll have to wait and see until then.
#27 Posted by JJWeatherman (14485 posts) -

Yeah, bandwidth issue like many have said. Although with all these new fangled ads and the possibility of a subscription model, HD seems more and more likely as a future feature.

@JJWeatherman: That plus an option for non-flash videos.

I like my videos with lower rez screens.  It's like I'm watching porn, but instead of Sasha Grey it's Chun-Li.

Dave mentioned it on Twitter early last month and the guys talked about it last year.  Whether or not HD videos will be a part of that model has not been confirmed or denied.

But the plan to eventually have some sort of subscription model on GB is confirmed?  Or is it just the GB team throwing out ideas?

But whether that is confirming a subscription model has yet to be seen.

All I know is that Mike Tatum is damn giddy about it.

So, there will be a hardware upgrade coming soon?

I think HD videos are a big deal.  IMO,  a sizable amount of possible patrons will be turned off of the site because of not having it.  I also think that higher resolutions are almost mandatory in today's market.  People expect to be able to use their computers at or near full capacity.  Especially when other gaming sites do.

Yes they are teasing an announcement I am aware but every person on these forums keeps saying with authority: "They gon' make a subscription model later this september...yo Dave said so on twitta!!"
#36 Posted by mosdl (3223 posts) -

Personally I think a subscription service makes sense, and we all know Dave is secretly the real top dog in Whiskey Media...

Yeah, Dave just mentioned that he was interested in hearing ideas for one and people ran with it.  I guess we'll have to wait and see, whether it be on 9/9 or earlier/later.
