I have been wondering this recently. Why don't companies who make gaming consoles make it so the consoles have a multi-disc changer so you can have like 5 discs in there at once, and it you want to switch back and forth between games, you just have to press a button? I'm looking for a factual reason or reasons for this, not just your opinion. It's fine if you want to give me your opinion, but please state that it is your opinion if you do. Thanks.

In my opinion, it is because there is no need for one as such. First of all, if you make a console with multi-disc changer it would make the console bigger which makes it look uncool. Second, with multi-disc changer it means that you would need multiple trays to house the discs which in turn increase the production cost. Besides, putting more parts into the console also complicates things and it is more likely that something would go wrong eventually. And lastly, the current consoles feature the hard drive so that you can download and store games on the device which also eliminate the need for multiple-disc changer.

well in my opinion, which is also pretty much fact in this case it would take a lot of space in the console making it way to big and bulky for no good reason, and it is going to cost a shit ton, making the console extremely expensive hence no one will buy it. so basically wasting a lot of money on people being lazy. the more logical reason is to have a massive harddisk and giving you the ability to install the game to the HDD, but then you would have to have serial number and always on RDM and they is not exactly something people like. Or for a game that is multi-disc they could let you install the hole game and just have a play disc. that basically works as a authentication for that game, you know like pc games used to do (and might still do)

For all the reasons.

Because the console is still inevitably going to freeze forcing you to get up and mess with the console anyway. So might as well get used to it by getting up and changing DVD's frequently

#8 Posted by IBurningStar (2164 posts) -

Because no one cares enough about that for it to be worth the extra cost.

#9 Posted by TheHumanDove (2523 posts) -

That console would probably look retarded with how they'd have to configure its shape/size

#10 Posted by tourgen (4469 posts) -

I like where this is going. I'll add a couple to your disk changer question -

Why not a laptop xbox360?

Why not consoles with auto tape drive gamesave backups?

Why not a hardware button the controller to order pizza?

Because, at this point, the all digital future we're heading to will make the entire thing redundant.

I'd like to see some real stats of single disc games compared to multi disc games like a percentage

#13 Posted by ThePhantomnaut (6197 posts) -

Digital downloads.

#14 Posted by Eaxis (912 posts) -

That would brick more 360s than red ring, and it's stupid.

#15 Posted by sjs2401 (15 posts) -

@Grillbar: @TheHumanDove: Wait, you're allowed to curse on here, and say something is retarded on here? Sorry, for being off-topic, but I just have to know this.

#16 Posted by sjs2401 (15 posts) -

@Inquisitor_Sif: Well, I agree with the cost issue. I think that may be the reason why. As for size, couldn't they use one of those smaller multidisc changers that are seen in cars like this one http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_10554_Sony-XA-250.html

As for storing games on your harddrive, that would be better, I agree, but the problem there lies with the fact that you can't actually rip/install games onto your harddrive, and then play them without the disc which defeats the whole purpose of installing the game in first place (other than to decrease load times).

Anyways, maybe 5 discs is a little too much, but I think a console should at least let you have 2 or 3 discs in there at once. I don't think that will happen though.

#17 Edited by IBurningStar (2164 posts) -
@sjs2401: You can say all kind of fucking things on here. Just don't curse in thread titles. I don't know why, but that is kind of a big no no. Also, don't think we are cool with you saying anything you want. Racism, sexism, and blatant homophobia will get you a nice little message from a mod. We as a community frown upon those things and will immediately turn on you for saying them.

Oh, and you totally can play games from your hard drive without a disc. That is how it works when you download games from the online shop.

I remember when Gus at Rooster Teeth suggested this and then proceeded to get the living shit verbally beat out of him for being so effin' lazy.

@Anwar:

Castlevania LoS

Dead Space 2

LA Noire

Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 3

Max Payne 3

FF 13

Witcher 2

I'm trying to scour my memory for any other games.. Dead Space 2 was two disc? I don't remember that at all but it was a pretty lengthy game.

Because when the disc is changing to a different disc it might become jammed in the system. This is known as a ghost in the system in layman terms where I come from if you know what I'm talking about and I think you do.

#25 Posted by AndrewB (7588 posts) -

They're looking to be rid of the disc drive altogether. Although this has already been answered... 'tis simply a matter of engineering and cost. Cost... especially because disc changers have a much greater chance of failure than a simple single disc drive.

#26 Posted by Kaiserreich (690 posts) -

Are there really that many console games that require multiple discs? Seems like a waste of money.

#27 Posted by Alexander (1721 posts) -
  Lego has you covered
#28 Posted by Village_Guy (2546 posts) -

Because when the consoles were made there weren't any games that would use multiple discs on their console.

Plus I doubt that any of the companies expected there to be more than a few games that would use several discs.

To encourage you to buy 5 separate consoles instead.

@IBurningStar: About the sexism thing. That goes EQUALLY both ways, right? Also, is it okay if I call women bitches and cunts on here if they ARE actually bitches and cunts? (Not all women are bitches and cunts. Just the ones who ARE). What if I make a generally true statement that can be interpreted as sexist, but is actually generally true. By the way, generally true means applies to a general group of people, but not ALL of the people in said group. Also can I call someone a faggot as long as I'm not calling him a faggot because he's gay? Lastly, if I say "that's gay," and I get banned for that, it's actually the mod who is the homophobe because I never said that gay was bad when I said that. That's what the mod implied because deep down, s/he thinks gay is bad. Oh, and what's the chance of me being banned by some butthurt mod because I said something that offended him/her, but didn't offend most other people? (Not saying all mods are butthurt, but some are, and you know the ones I'm talking about. If you got offended by that statement about butthurt mods, you probably are one).

One last thing, I'm not politically correct, and I hate politically correct people who try to censor everything you say. This doesn't mean that I'm racist (far from it) sexist, or homophobic. I just tell the truth, and sadly, most people don't want to hear the truth.

More cost for both the producer and the consumer.

More parts to break.

Unnecessary size increase.

#36 Posted by fox01313 (5069 posts) -

Mostly the cost of the tech added to the console, just go get digital downloads from xbox live/psn then you don't have to worry about discs or just play one disc based game at a time.

Because it's a ridiculous idea. the machine would have to be huge and have extra mechanical parts in there that mess up all the cooling that the box has to be designed for and create more room for malfunctions.

It doesn't make one reasonable ounce of sense.

Personally I wish more consoles had lathes built in. What does Nintendo, Sony, and MS expect me to do when I find a nice burl in the woods and I want to turn a new chair leg or whatever? I mean WTF?

#46 Posted by guiseppe (2840 posts) -

Because it is needless. What I would like is the option of not having to switch discs in certain games. Give me that, and I'm happy.

More importantly, how are you playing console games while tromping through the woods?
