The name says absolutely nothing about the product and it sounds completely ridiculous when said in regular conversation. I fucking hate it. People have been complaining about Veta, and maybe it doesn't say anything about the product, but at least it is straight forward and easy to say. If a person unfamiliar with video games walked into a store and tried to pronounce Wii U they would have a lot of trouble doing so.

They should have just called it Nintendo. Even the Nintendo Feel or the Nintendo Stream would have been better then this absurd attempt to use established IP.

Reggie made it worse. He actually expected applause after that.

I think he did after saying "New Super Mario Brothers...Mii"  as well.

Worst rep ever.

I really can't stand Reggie. He delivers his lines in press conferences so stern and seriously that it's almost comical. He seriously needs to relax...or be replaced.

I don't know why they didn't just go with Wii 2 if that was their concern. At least people could say that.

So many numbered systems these days... I'd rather go with a completely new name.
But like I said, "brand recognition" and all...

It's Nintendo, did you seriously expect them to follow the other's usual routines?

Yes, dumb name but so is Starfox 64 3D. Video game companies are not that great at naming things with the exception of NES and Playstation.

Let's see

- Keeps the Wii brand name
- Quite iconographic
- clever play on the word "View" which directly ties into the consoles capabilities (am I the only person to notice this?)
- instantly recognizable and sticks in your brain, if only because you find it retarded
- non-gamers will remember and recognize the hell out of it
- it will sell millions

"OOOh Wii U, Killer Tofu"

It sounds like the name of a walk-through they should give new Wii users, not the name of the actual console.

You know what else was the worst name of all time?  The Wii.  And you know what you call the Wii?  The Wii.  It was codenamed Revolution, it was announced as the Wii and people freaked out and cracked jokes and so on and so forth.  And you know what?  It didn't make a bit of difference.  People still just call it the Wii, people grew accustomed to the name and got over it (mostly).  Also, no, not the worst name of all time.  It doesn't even come close to those parents that wanted to name their child 4real.  Now that's a bad name.

It should have been Pee Euw instead.. right? right?

But no, it's not the worst name of all time. Commodore 64 takes that in my book. What wannabe poet came up with that stuff? geeesh

I also still think it should have been named Perfect Nintendo Entertainment System or Amazing Nintendo Entertainment System.

I think this is all part of a big sociological study about people reactions, acceptances and rejections to names and conventions. I mean, there couldn't been a worse name for it. They had to know WiiU would be an awful name

  • X Box Three Sixty.
  • Game Boy Pocket Color.
  • Wonder Swan.

It's not good, but it surely isn't the worst. Not by a lot. At least it's two meaningless sounds instead of silly word salad. Wii U would actually be an awesome name if they went with WiiÜ instead. That's 4 dots, mofos.

Yes, I definitely think WiiU is the worst name. It feels awkward to say and everytime I say it, I just keep thinking of Kung Pow:Enter the Fist. I mean why couldn't they just have stayed with the code name for the Wii, Nintendo Revolution. That just sounded so much more appealing.

Dumb or not, the "Wii" is now a household name. They couldn't afford to lose that. Mums know what a "Wii" is.

"Wii U" isn't all that different sounding from "Wii 2," to be honest. Nintendo has always been a bit wacky anyway, so I'm not sure I expected anything better.

Calling it the Nintendo "Stream" after already having the Nintendo "Wii" would be ... well, the jokes have already been juvenile, but they'd be far worse.

Well, considering you only can use 1 controller at a time, WiiU maybe seems fitting. By the time they figure out how to have multiple controller support again for their next console, perhaps they'll call it WiiUs instead.

The names don't have to mean anything! I mean Christ I had better Ideas off the top of my head. PSP 2 and Super Wii. or hell, Super PSP and Wii 2. Either of those sound worlds better than what they came up with!

People always get into a bit of a frenzy about the names of their electronic products. Yes, I think there's some debate to be had as to whether Wii U is a good name or a bad name, but in the grand scheme of things do names really have a massive impact on the quality of a product? We may attach meaning to them at first but as the name gets repeated over and over it eventually loses its meaning and just becomes an identifier for that product. This situation has happened plenty of times before with hardware and software both inside and outside of gaming, I mean the fuss that people kicked up in the face of the Wii being called the Wii was ridiculous. I agree with Meowayne that in a lot of regards it's a pretty strong name but I do agree it's also a little silly, however I can't help but find something endearing about that silliness.

it's weird. WiiU and 3DS. in a way, they don't sound like new systems, but rather slightly upgraded iterations of the systems. (by that i mean DS to DSi).

Wii U is a weird name, but it'll stay in our heads because of that fact. while it's not the greatest name in the world, we'll instantly remember and recognize it. it's effective, which is what one would want in a name. so, i wouldn't think it's the worst name at all.
