I'm not going to say "no" indefinitely (even though that's the only choice to gave me :P), so there is a chance. However, there are too many great retail releases that put up a greater than or equal battle.
Will the 2012 GotY be a downloadable game?

@Animasta: I have never been a fan of turn based strategy games, not to mention that TB is a huge fan of the original so I have no problems believing him. Don't get butthurt, please.
not a fan of turn based strategy games? fine, but saying it doesn't deserve GOTY when you haven't even played it is incredibly hypocritical.
(by the way I haven't played it either so I have no idea whether it is deserving or not)

@Manhattan_Project: Oh ok, well I appreciate the kind thoughts. Though I don't know why you'd feel sorry for me. I haven't had any real problems and you're the one crying over save issues and graphics bugs.
Yeah how dare I not accept an inferior product.
Trials Evolution and The Walking Dead are two of the best releases this year. I doubt either will win any overall GOTY honors, but they deserve to be on a finalist list.
I think it's between XCOM, Journey, and maybe The Walking Dead. Sleeping Dogs is the underdog I think, and we have to wait and see with Hitman. I voted "yes" because it's too close to call, but I sided with Journey. It hasn't been getting a lot of talk of late because it came out early in the year, but I think when people sit down and start talking about the games from this year side by side it has a strong chance. Not sure if GB considers that a GOTY should define the year in gaming somewhat, or just goes with the best game. I think that question could decide whether or not this is the year of the downloadable.
Unless part 5 of The Walking Dead is the worst thing ever, I'd say it'd be my GotY.
Jeez dude, give it a rest. The vast majority of people have been able to play the game without any problems. I'm sorry to hear that you ran into some issues, but that in no way means that it is an inferior product, nor should it not be considered for GOTY. Last year, Giant Bomb named Skyrim their GOTY, a game that was plagued with numerous bugs. But guess what? Most people were able to play the game just fine (myself, and the five members of the staff included) and they thought it was worthy of GOTY.@Kerned said:

All games have technical issues, this isn't something exclusive to the Walking Dead.

I hope the bombcast is a short one this year.
why, people generally like a long one. i know i like a long one.
Goddang it, the internet has corrupted me!
Seriously though, I really hope Far Cry 3 turns out amazing and steals everything primarily because it's the last thing to come out! My personal choice is still Asura's Wrath.
I said no but i very well think it can happen and at the end of the day it very well might be my GOTY (walking dead or journey). But with halo 4, black ops 2, and Assassin creed 3 hitting the market regardless of quality i just think these games have too much flash in the public eye that one of these or something similar will most likely be GOTY.

The guys don't award GOTY "regardless of quality".

Except I haven't been dealing with these issues. Besides that stupid bug in the last episodes its been fine. But there are lots of people who cant play on PC because of the save file issues and the stuttering on the consoles is an issue that I only found out about after watching my sister play through the last episode. The GB guys specifically gave the GotY award to the PC and Xbox 360 versions (which had small bugs) and not the PS3 version. The Walking Dead has significant bugs on all platforms.
And just because you decide its okay for a company to ignore tech issues, doesn't mean I have to.
You have nothing to go on but the opinion of one guy on YouTube so your assertion that it doesn't deserve GOTY is completely baseless. I would be shocked if the final argument wasn't between TWD, Journey and XCOM. I usually like TB but his distaste for XCOM: EU pretty plainly comes from his fanboyism of the original.@Animasta: I have never been a fan of turn based strategy games, not to mention that TB is a huge fan of the original so I have no problems believing him. no they will go all super nostalgic and issue it on paper ribbon just so they can make some profit on a paper ribbon reader.
I think there will be at least one downloadable game on their final GOTY list. Whether or not the ultimate winner will be a downloadable game I'm not sure.
GOTY is a completely meaningless title/award whatever.
i honestly dont give a shit who giantbomb ranks best.
however the GOTY discussion is great, which is weird i dont care at all who wins, but i like the process of figuring it out.

Saints Row III got robbed last year.
But those games also come as boxed copies, even for the PC.@Deusoma said:
I downloaded Sleeping Dogs and Darksiders 2 off of Steam, so sure, why not? :PIndeed. Basically every game out there is a downloadable game. Assassin's Creed 3, Mass Effect 3, Dishonored and whatever else might be on someone's GOTY list are downloadable games. :P
Journey doesn't come in a box, right? Neither does Walking Dead?
