Windows 8 Start Screen Apps Not Working

#1 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2814 posts) - 7 months, 19 days ago

So I got bored enough to try launching some of the apps in the Start screen and they don't seem to work at all anymore. They were fine several days ago.

This is what I see when I launch the apps and they just stay there. The only one that works is the Netflix app, so yay? I'm not gonna lose any sleep over this because it's just the silly Start screen stuff. I was going to play some background music and just now noticed this problem. Any ideas on what the hell is going on?

It's been out for like a week, so... probably not.

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the apps? I've had the Mail app open up blank before and that seemed to do the trick.

Sorry idk. I go out of my way to avoid anything to do with the metro thing.

But then what about the Windows store because that doesn't work either?

Don't worry I got the basic troubleshooting steps outta the way. All that's left is to just do the Windows 8 refresh thing or just reinstall the OS again.

No idea, never had anything like that happen in the months I've been running 8.

Did you do an upgrade from Windows 7, or is it a fresh install? If the former, you might try completely reformatting and doing a fresh install.

#10 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2814 posts) - 7 months, 18 days ago

@Ravenlight: Former, and yeah it's starting to look like I have to do that. I think I'm going to procrastinate for now because I need to start moving a bunch of shit before doing a clean install and this all sounds like a lot of work to just get something I'll barely use to work.

You can do a refresh of the system without doing a clean install. I'd try that first.

Everything may not run correctly right away. They release things before there actually ready. Also, there going to be updating alot so its going to change things which can cause problems.

Thanks for Pirating Windows 8. Please feel free to go to your local computer merchant to purchase a valid copy.

#14 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (2814 posts) - 7 months, 18 days ago

@abomunist: Yeah but then I'll be losing my desktop apps, I think I might as well just go for the full clean install.

Just do a refresh, it's essentially a new install. It actually wiped my entire boot drive though so beware of that. I had the exact same problem with apps though after my upgrade from 7 ult. The refresh fixed it, aside from wiping my stuff. It pretty much only keeps what's in your user folder. Only reason that sucked was I didn't have a chance to backup my steam folder, so I have to redownload everything. Along with reinstall anything I want back since all of this get "refreshed".

@Maginnovision: Good to know. I just finished backing up.

Just FYI, Win8 comes with an imaging program built in. Once you have your setup the way you want it, image it just in case.

So i have the same problem you do. My pc is brand new (1 month) Came with Windows 8 64 bit and worked like a charm out of the box. Then by the second or third week the mail app started spazzing out and not fully opening up to show me my mail. I have been able to restart my computer and get it to work again, but then again after a few hours, it would fail once again. Now restarts dont even do anything, and i looked into refreshing my PC. Turns out that i need a Windows 8 installation DVD to properly refresh my machine. But since my lenovo didnt come with ANY of that software or documentation (lucky me) i cant refresh.

So if there is a way to change my app configurations or something, please let me know. Its not the end of the world, but it would be nice to have my apps running well again.

**NOTE: Internet exploer app works just fine...its got to be the apps messing up??**
