I included both games because they play differently enough to both be worth getting. Sure they're both shooters, but Gears is third person, has a bit of a slower pace, and in multiplayer it generally requires you to get up close to your opponents. I haven't played Halo in a while, but I still feel comfortable saying it's one of the best xbox 360 games I've played. There are a lot of people out there who like one game and can't stand the other.
Well, Orange Box is 5 amazing games for the price of one. So just buy two copies of Orange Box and you're set. Enjoy the best game ever made by a guy with the name of Gabe Newell.

Top ten best buys....hhhmmm...(based on time spent and fun had btw) 1. ES:Oblivion 2. Forza 2 3. RB6:Vegas(both) 4. Too Human 5. Halo 3(Halo:CE is BC and might be my all-time fav vg period) 6. Gears of War(both, esp. GoW2 though) 7. Lost Odyssey 8. Battlefield Bad Co.(The sp is great in BBC, but mostly for the mp and in BF:MC as well) 9. Dead Space(amazing new IP imo) 10. CoD 2 & 4
Not really set on the order actually, but pretty close I guess, and RE5 may take a place in the order after I play it some more. Very impressive so far imo. And I played the hell outta PGR3 and love that series, especially PGR2 on the ol' box. And forgot about Mass Effect. Very good game even w/all the flaws(esp.the lack of depth/detail/variety of the side quest worlds), but an awesome sci-fi story that deserves attention. Looking forward to ME2 for sure.

Thanks to everyone who responded so far! I'm still filling up my library, so this is really helpful. I didn't even realize that Forza 2 existed until now.

I'm surprised by everyone else who said Bioshock. I thought it was awesome, but maybe more of a niche game.

not really, actually the pc ocmmunity that is 1337 hardcorez complains that it isn't nichey enough and teh downgrade from system shock 2 (despite being far far far better recieved).
Ahh, there truly are no must buys, everyone's taste is going to be different, but here's the top 10 that I'd heavily recommend: - Halo 3 - Blue Dragon - Lost Odyssey - Dead Rising - Vegas 2 - Banjo: Nut and Bolts - Mass Effect - Tales of Vesperia - Call of Duty 4 - dunno

Disk : Culdcept Saga Midnight Club LA Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts Flatout Ultimate Carnage Orange Box - for PC gamers who think they have the best version of Half Life 2 and Episode 1 Sonic Unleashed - I recommend everyone at least try it, not a great game but far underrated by the idiotic media and community
XBLA : Space Giraffe - play it until you understand it, then enjoy Death Tank Omega Five - great side-scrolling SHUMP, amazing graphics, great music and lots of fun Switchball - also available on PC, really underrated compared to Marble Blast Ultra, and a better game
