I'm a bit bored right now and so I thought to ask you what your favourite "Let's Play" series were.

I haven't seen very many so I can't recommend any to start of the thread but I'm looking for funny ones or informative ones.

Thanks!

Pretty much anything by ChipCheezum and General Ironicus. Darkchiron on YouTube does good LPs of horror games. The Freelance Astronauts are funny dudes as well.

DeceasedCrab's take on Cocoron is pretty good, as was his ActRaiser Let's Play.

The only one I've watched is the Swat 4 Let's Play by Spoony, because I love me some Swat 4.

You should check out the legendary Sonic 2006 LP if you haven't seen it yet.

have fun. I really like Slowbeef and Diabetus' Snatcher Let's Play. But that's probably because I've always been a huge fan of snatcher.

My favorite, excluding the obvious, would have to be The Dark Id. Especially his Drakengard, Nier and Chrono Cross LPs. I also enjoy Retsupurae.

That's one of the few LPs I've watched. It's a great LP of a great game.

I would suggest Hamst3r's LPs. He actually makes an effort to make his videos look and sound very good and he isn't annoying like many LPers tend to be.

Nanosuitninja's Crysis Ironman series (he's doing a second "HD" run now too).

The Nier LP was fantastic.  Made me buy the game.  Totally underrated.

X's Adventures in Minecraft. His LP of the game is actually what convinced me to buy it. He's a true gamer at heart, and all his decisions are based solely on what he thinks will be fun to do. Actually, any video by him tends to be fun to watch. Theres a Portal 2 LP as well, Magicka, and some other stuff, but I stayed for the Minecraft.  http://www.youtube.com/user/davidr64yt

I don't think I can watch it, because all I see are Vampire: The Masquerade videos and your Nolan North thing. Also, if you know they suck, why not improve them in some way?

It's excellent, right? I had already purchased and completed the game four times (incredible ending. You know the one) when I started reading, but the thread did compel me to pony up for an account. Though it was less from a desire to contribute and mostly due to SA going Pay-to-Lurk for a week and me losing my patience.

I'm posting them on another channel, it's a blind playthrough. Never played Earthbound before.

Also, I'm not sure how to improve them, I prefer doing blind playthroughs, so I can't be super informative, and as for the talking aspect that I struggle with, that would improve after doing them longer.

SSoHPKC, Slyfox, Nova, and Hamst3r are the top ones that I think of when it comes to LPs.

#31 Posted by Video_Game_King (29308 posts) - 2 years, 14 days ago
@CL60:

I'm not exactly a fan of blind playthroughs. You should usually play a game before LPing it so you know what's going on and what to expect. Nobody really wants to see an LPer saying, "aah, how do I beat this boss? All my spells and items are useless against this guy".

I just can't articulate how good the Let's Play of Vietnamese Pokemon Crystal is. I'm not a big fan of LPs personally, but I follow it religiously.

 @CL60: Do you usually go solo for your videos? If so have you considered bringing in a second commentator, then you can at least have a second voice to fill any dead air.

I have more fun with blind playthroughs, and to avoid that, I usually cut out parts like that, if I'm having trouble finding something, I will edit the majority of myself walking around going "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!".

Yeah, I go solo. But I don't know anybody that would do that, my only friend that actually plays games doesn't want to watch another person play a game.

The GB ER's are the only ones I can stand.

@CL60:

Again, doesn't it make more sense only to LP games you've played before, since you'll know if they're good LP material in the first place? That's why you don't see me doing a Spanky's Quest Let's Play: it's not a good idea. Also, because I don't own a microphone and can't really work out some sound issues I have while recording.

Totally agree man!  I really love watching his stuff.  There is just a pure fun/unadulterated  genuine passion for playing games.

The majority of Let's Plays suck because either the person has a super annoying voice or they don't say anything at all and try to call it a Let's Play....the only guy I like had a super chill voice and he was doing a playthrough of Super Metroid beating the bosses in reverse order and had great commentary....shame that was the only one he did.

I prefer let's plays where the person is experiencing something for the first time, not rushing through the game, knowing how to do everything, and knowing exactly where to go. I don't want somebody telling me whats going to happen next, or just half assing his way through everything telling me what he's doing because he's already done it before, that's boring to me. I like first time reactions to things happening in the game.
Sure I do like Let's Plays of games the person has already played, but I much prefer blind ones.

And as I said, if theres a part that I find boring, or unnecessary in my LP, I'll just cut it out.

@CL60:

Why do I feel like we've had this exact same conversation before? If ever I could use the word "déjà vu", this would be the moment. Also, I'm not sure how somebody can half-ass their way through a game. Either you full-ass a game or you no-ass a game.

By that I just meant that they run through the game like it's nothing because they already know where everything is, and where to go. So they just run through telling you whats going to happen, and what they're doing. I much prefer the reactions of people on their first time seeing something. I agree that I don't like watching people run around not knowing what they're doing for multiple episodes, which is why I edit most of that out.

Also we totally did have this conversation one time.

Cybershell13's Sonic LPs are pretty funny and well produced.  Here is a link to the first episode in case you're interested.

@CL60:

I feel like you can still have decent reactions on a second playthrough. If that's a problem, though, you could always invite somebody who's never played the game into your LP and get the best of both worlds, especially if they have good chemistry.

I would, but I don't know anybody willing to do that. My friends suck. Also whats with that photography that flies in Earthbound? He wasted like 15 seconds of my time.

Don't have any in particular, but whenever people do impossible shit (Brutal speedruns in SC2, etc.) I'm always really impressed.

I'd do it with you, but I don't own a microphone, and I'm not sure how two people would view a live play at the same time without dicking around in Justin.TV. Also, just wait until the end of the game, when it becomes relevant. Until then, it's all part of the game's cool sense of humor.

Get a mic then, and we can do a game of your choice!
