Just an idea I saw on another forum that was pretty good time sink and a nostalgia trip. I figured you guys and gals might all enjoy this.

So anyways what is your favourite games from before this generation of consoles and handhelds? So no Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS, Vita, DS, PSP or any other modern console or handheld I have neglected to mention games are to be mentioned in this thread. Also for the spirit of this thread lets also prevent any PC/Mac games from after 2006.

Here is my list I have created. Go duders and dudettes!

EDIT: I put my response in quotes because I copied and pasted my post from that other forum I mentioned.

Last gen is considered "old" now? 0.0 I'm not that old (in my 30's) but c'mon now. Hey in the spirit of the thread, why not? Here we go.
NES: Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3, Battletoads, Golf, Double Dragon 1 and 2 (3 was okay but to damn hard), DuckTales (don't laugh this was a great 3rd party game), MegaMan 2, Hogans Alley (fave lightgun game), Basewars, R.C. Pro-AM, Excitebike, Cobra Triangle (the first game I ever bought), Blades of Steel, Ice Hockey, Rad Racer, River City Ransom, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Skate or Die 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game, Castlevania, Bomberman, Super Dodge Ball, Tiny Toon Adventures, Tetris, Maniac Mansion.

N64: Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, F1 World Grand Prix (this game blew me away with the realism), Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, F-Zero X, Zelda: OoT, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Wave Race 64, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Mario Party, Starfox 64, Cruis'N USA, Excitebike 64.
Gamecube: Wave Race: Blue Storm, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, F-Zero GX, Super Monkey Ball. Wasn't a huge Gamecube fan as you can tell.

PS2: Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, Gran Turismo IV, Shadow of the Colossus, Need for Speed: Underground, NFS: U2, Tekken Tag Tournament.
Dreamcast: Tony Hawks PS2, Crazy Taxi, NBA 2K2, Flag to Flag Racing.
PC: Diablo II: LoD, Starcraft, Warcraft II: ToD, Civilization II and III, The Sims, The Sims 2, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom II, Theme Hospital, Sim City 3000, Halo, Battlefield 2, Wolfenstein 3D, Sid Meiers Pirates!, Kings Quest II and III, Police Quest I, II, III, Space Quest I, II.
Genesis, Gameboy, Xbox, Virtual Boy, Sega CD, 32X, 3D0, Lynx, Jaguar, Atari 2600, Commodore 64, GB Colour, Sega Master System, CDi, Game Gear, Wonderswan, N-Gage I never owned, so I can't say. Plus all the other consoles and I couldn't think of just now over the years I never owned, so ya.

Here's a weird one, Toy Commander (DC). It's a great vehicle action game. Has tanks, cars, boats, and planes, and it all takes place in a house. Basically an entire game made around the Levelord idea - on a side note, don't google image search Levelord unless you're looking for a bunch of Kim Possible porn.

I'll also always have a soft spot for the TimeSplitters series as well.

@Klei:

Grim Fandango and Curse of Monkey Island are classics, and I'll never forget them.

My all-time favorite game is Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, followed by Knights of the old Republic. Both of those games are wonderful "oldies"

A really old school game I had an odd fascination with was from the really old era of shareware games. There was once this gauntlet-styled game called Gladiator by this long gone developer called Forgotten Sages and I was so into it that I actually bought it with an old school mailing of cash (I think like $15). I was really happy when I got an email back from the guys with everything for the full game and it even game with a level editor that really got me interested in game development (I was actually I kid back then so I was quite impressible).

Just looking at pictures of it makes me feel a little nostalgic.

There's an opensource version of it now called OpenGlad(offsite link).

Fallout 2 and Team Fortress Classic (definitely not the 1.5 revision though, the medic changes made them less fun, and the new official maps killed the customs).

Edit: It would be criminal if I did not mention Goldeneye. I played a decent bit of original NES and some Atari, but that was the first that really hooked me.

Mega Man 2 is my favorite console game of all time. A lot of that is nostalgia, but I pop it in every month or so and play through it and it is still great. Also, I was always a fan of the old Sierra Online adventure games, but Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist is easily my favorite. I'm a big fan of Space Quest IV and Gabriel Knight as well.

Uh... all of them? Nah, I'll just list a few of my favorites for each console.

SNES: Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, and 3; Super Metroid; Mega Man X

PS1: Crash Bandicoot 2, 3; Spyro 2; Mega Man Legends; Mega Man X4, X5; Omega Boost

PS2: Ratchet and Clank 2, 3; Jak and Daxter 1, 2, 3, X; Kingdom Hearts 1

Gamecube: Metroid Prime 1, 2; Super Mario Sunshine; Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

PC (pre-2006): Half-Life 1, 2, FEAR, Counter Strike Source, Day of Defeat Source

GBA: Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission; Mega Man Zero 3; Crash Bandicoot The Huge Adventure; Final Fantasy VI

There are more games here and there and probably something I'm forgetting, but all of those games are great and I've played every single one of them at some point in the past year except for Jak X and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.

So let me give you the lowdown on Banjo-Kazooie. Banjo-Kazooie is my favourite game of all time, I don't think I have ever really said why it is at any point on the site, well here is why.

I really have no idea, it just is.

I've often been asked to explain my passion for this game, every time I can never really say why, because even I don't know. Banjo-Kazooie is just the game I can play at any time, I am never going to say "I don't feel like playing Banjo-Kazooie right now". Even after just beating it often I will want to just jump right back in trying to get a faster time. The music, the art style, the controls, the characters, the everything about this game is great. But to keep it not just about this, here are a few more.

  • Banjo-Tooie - I keep going back and forth whether I like this more than Banjo-Kazooie, as of now I prefer Banjo-Kazooie but tomorrow could be the other way around.
  • Tiny Toons Adventure Buster Busts Loose - That football stage is great!
  • Conkers Bad Fur Day - So many frustrating parts, yet I still love it so much.
  • Super Mario 64 - I know it like the back of my hand, also you can totally give the baby back then kill it!
  • Pokemon Red - No shit.
  • The Sims - Still prefer this to the Sims 3.

Probably SaGa Frontier and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Played them a ton for the first couple years I had them, and after that, I played them every summer vacation until 04/05 ish. I'm sure there's a few other noteworthy ones, but those two stand out the most.

Memories come back as I read your answers. First game I have ever played was Diablo, demo actually. Both with the sequel the their expansions, those are great games. I didn't play the third part because of no funds to buy. Or it is rather because I am sure I wouldn't do anything other than playing the game after buying it :). Other things are StarCraft - for single player, Battle.net and very advanced map editor for creating custom maps. I have only played sequel's Beta, reason for not buying the same as Diablo 3's. Of course also WarCraft 2. That's all from Blizzard that I consider classics. Metal Slug on playing machines (how to call them in English?), Neverhood (never finished, I've been to young), Heroes 3, Gothic. Maybe those aren't so old yet but Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. The second one will not be ever deleted from my PC :). I hope I didn't forget too much titles...

Ultima VII

Played this one tons when I was a kid. Never even got far in the main quest, just messed around. What's amazing about this game is that it basically did what the current Elder Scrolls games are doing today: open world, NPCs with their own schedules, hunger systems, nonlinear quests, dialogue trees, etc. And it did all that in '92!
