Well the New Year is almost upon us... and it doesn't look there are many more games coming out that would break any sort of barriers. So I ask you this...
From the last decade, which game is your favorite? This is from 2000-2009.
Mine is Mass Effect, hands fucking down. My favorite game of all time - got it when it came out in 2007 and still think it's one of the greatest gaming experiences you can have.
Your Game of the Decade
Think about it--Deus Ex was released in 2000. I'm not sure people's memories are long enough to choose a game of the decade.
Ouch, tough call. I've recently decided that I'm picking Slumdog Millionaire as Movie of the Decade, but as far as games go, I haven't thought about it. This will take some time.
Just because I know a lot of people will say the same old generic OoT or FFVII if it was of "all time" or of the past 20 years.
" @rateoforange: All you really have to do is think of your favorite game and then remember if it came out in this decade. If it didn't, pick your next favorite. If THAT one didn't, do the next favorite. Just because I know a lot of people will say the same old generic OoT or FFVII if it was of "all time" or of the past 20 years. "In that case, I pick Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. My favorite game of the decade.
Shit. That's a fucking tough question. I'm not really sure I can pick my favorite game of the decade. That's like picking your favorite child, you just can't do it. I will list some games that I fucking loved this decade:
- Resident Evil 4
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Kingdom Hearts Franchise
- Pokemon Platinum
- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Burnout Revenge
- Mario Kart DS
- Street Fighter IV
- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
I could spend hours listing games that I loved this decade.
Oh man..... tough choices.
My top few are
GTA San Andreas
Arcanum
Battlefield 2142
I feel like I should throw a STALKER in there... problem is my favorite one so far ( Call of Pripyat) doesn't come out in USA this decade, but was out in the CIS in October.
I'd pick Deus Ex then; easily had the most impact on me. Plus I think most of the popular shooter/rpg hybrids coming out now (ME and Borderlands--looking at you) owe it a great debt. But I don't really think Deus Ex is the 'Game of the Decade'. That'd probably be something like World of Warcraft.
" I'd pick Deus Ex then; easily had the most impact on me. Plus I think most of the popular shooter/rpg hybrids coming out now owe it a great debt. "You have a very solid point. It did kinda open the floodgates. Too bad it's a hideous game nowadays because I never played it when it was fresh.
Metroid Prime. I have never in my life been that blown away by a game almost every time I open a door. The visuals weren't just amazing, they were engrossing. That game gets you in a bear hug and doesn't let go. But in a good way. I guess.
Edit: Okay, fuck, RE4 was really god damn awesome, too. Close second.
I was just thinking about when everyone was gonna start asking this question. And then I was thinking how this question absolutely does not work for videogames. There are certain games that will always be great, but for the most part games evolve with time, even more-so than books, movies, or music(yeah yeah, shut up, I know music evolves as well, but that is different, and not reliant on technology.)
Don't really know, but it would be something along the lines of:
Bioshock
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Timesplitters: Future Perfect
Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Halo
There are a lot of other games which I love, but these probably stand out seen as the effect they had on me as a gamer.
I'd have to give game of the decade to World of Warcraft. It became so much more than a game. It was a cultural phenomenon. The only other thing I can liken it to in terms of how big it got is Pac Man, except WoW doesn't have it's own cereal, kids Saturday morning cartoon show, or hit Pac Man fever song. However, in terms of there being a Pac Man of our time I think WoW is as close as you'll get to it.
I will say Resident Evil 4... but I bet if I looked back at this in 5 years time I would answer Street Fighter IV in a heartbeat.
If I am going to follow in the theories I put forth in my recent thread concerning game time and GOTY, the same condition should apply to "Game of the Decade". Under those circumstances, World of Warcraft is my choice. I will likely never sink as much time into a single game as I did into that one. And, I really did enjoy a lot of it. Getting to 70 the first time is really thrilling as are those perfectly executed raids. But, here's the stickler in this decision though. I don't play WoW anymore and have mostly no inclination to return. On the other hand, I am starting a new game of KOTOR and am eagerly awaiting Star Wars: The Old Republic based off my devotion to the original single-player adventure. So, Knights of the Old Republic is a better current choice and a great pre-WoW choice, but if I was to pick a game that had the most influence on my gaming, Warcraft would still take my top honor.
Since Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu came out on Virtual Console in Japan, I'm going to give GOTD to FE4. THERE IS NO ESCAPING ITS GREATNESS!!!
There are still a bunch of games that I need to play through but so far and in no particular Order
- Jade Empire
- Oblivion
- Guild Wars
- The Witcher
- Mass Effect
- Grand Theft Auto 4
- Dead Space
- Bully
- Tekken 5 (Only because Tekken 3 wasn't released this decade.)
- Jet Set Radio Future
- Fallout 3
Metroid Prime for me. After that, really liked Resident Evil 4, Fallout 3, Persona 4, Smash Bros Melee and a few others in some sort of order I can't be bothered listing at the moment.
My first real game system that my brothers actually let me use was a GBA, and I'm not much of a first-party Nintendo or Sega fan, so most of my favorite games are actually from this decade, namely:
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Golden Sun: The Lost Age
- The World Ends With You
- Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones
- Persona 4
" I'd pick Deus Ex then; easily had the most impact on me. Plus I think most of the popular shooter/rpg hybrids coming out now (ME and Borderlands--looking at you) owe it a great debt. But I don't really think Deus Ex is the 'Game of the Decade'. That'd probably be something like World of Warcraft. "That's a pretty solid call I think. Like all these things it really depends on what is meant by 'Game of the Year/Decade/Whatever'.
Personally, mine is also Deus Ex, because it showed me what games could be - though it never really had the impact on the industry I wish it had. But in terms of wider impact, GOTD has to be World of Warcraft. Right at the top of the heap for 5 years, still going strong and still the game every other publisher wishes they could beat.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has just about everything i wanted out of a game. Come on RockStar, sort it out!!
Halo: Combat Evolved. Revolutionized the popularity of first-person shooters on consoles. It also made the Xbox a legitimate console.
Even though I have never played WoW I probably give the reward to it, because it ruined more lives than any other game over the past 10 years.
It is a tough pick for me but Resident Evil 4 seems to be my pick for the time being.
