What is your GOTYs for each year this in this generation of consoles? So that means 2005/6 (lumping them together), 2007, 2008, and your predicted 2009.
2005/2006
No, it's not only because aside from the launch of the 360 there were about 3 good games this year. This game was rather good. Now, I can't say it is on par with the other GOTYs, but this was just so much fun when it came out. Some others worth mentioning are Kameo, Oblivion, and Vegas (I believe it was out in 2006?)
2007
I still play it daily, nuff said. It's just by far the best shooter series imo. It does everything and does it well. It's halo. Some others worth mentionig are Mass Effect, COD4, and Blue Dragon. I stress Blue dragon the most.
2008:
Holy shit Batman! A February game!? Yea actually. This is by far the best story of this generation. I've yet to meet someone who has played this all the way through and dislikes the game. I don't think it's really possible, but then again, look at VanOrd. Granted, he doesn't like video games, but ahh....what I'm saying is that if you absorb everything in this game it's hard not to like at least a bit of it. Anyway, the game, well it's basically the most untraditional jrpg this generation-- a traditional jrpg. And it does everything right. A blast from the past? Well, I dunno. If you say so. What I would say is that it was a great game with one of the best stories out. People compare it to Final Fantasy. I say they have no clue what they're talking about. Honorable mentions: GTA4, MGS4, Banjo3
2009:
2009. Well, while half of the year is up, the truth is that we've only got a sliver of the games coming this year. It should be known by now that we just can't predict GOTYs 100% perfectly on a fact that lots of game's will get pushed back, end up differently than expected as revealed, have new ones announced, etc. Out of those that are announced, meaning excluding the inevitable Rare game, I'm going to have to give it to either Alan Wake or Resonance of Fate, assuming the prior comes out this year and that the latter's release date is the worldwide date. Honorable mentions, or really what are other possible contenders, Killzone 2, maybe Borderlines, Conviction, and whatever else. Expect something to be added here after E3.
Your GOTYs for each year in gaming this gen?
Did you mean to post this in the Xbox 360 forum?
Umm.... the 360 was alone in 2005/6, and then it had Halo and then the amazing gem known as Lost Odyssey.
Hell, I didn't get a Ps3 until the end of 2008, no shit my GOTY's are going to be 360 games
a Jrpg, game of the year 2008 huh?I guess you didn't play lots of game that year. [more]

As you can see, I don't play a lot of games, really. Mostly mainstream stuff. So far this year I've only played Resident Evil 5.
I don't hate a lot of games. So if a big title didn't make it on the list, it's probably because I didn't get around to play it.

sidenote: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3FES was released in 2007 and would garner a GOTY runner up spot even though it is a last generation game. Also I didn't play it until this year.
2005 - Dead or Alive 4
2006 - Gears of War
2007 - Mass Effect
2008 - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
2009 - Mass Effect 2?
This is just off the top of my head. I haven't played MGS4 yet, still have to play MGS3...so yeah. That could be up there soon.
2005/2006, besides more CS I don't really remember playing anything that year that I would call GOTY at all.
2007- would be Bioshock for single player just for the story and the way you find out everything. Multiplayer would be TF2, and if could only be one TF2, since I still play it now and love it more than ever before.
2008-I'm gonna say Dead Space because it surprised me so much. I never expected EA to come out with a game like that and have it be anything but bad. Multiplayer would be L4D.
2009- I don't have one so far...most fun I've had recently on a game that surprised me was Wolverine Origins, but I'm getting inFamous today, so that may change pretty fast. Not counting releases, atm it would still be TF2.
Also came into it later, but 2008 I also gotta mention Persona 4. Best single player game that entire year by a mile, I just said Dead Space because it surprised me.
Oh, neat idea.
Keeping myself restricted to games that were actually released on current gen consoles, but I feel I have to note that the best game of 2005/2006 was Psychonauts. That said:
2006: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
While the Elder Scrolls series had been consistently excellent on the PC front, particularly Oblivion's direct fore-runner Morrowind, Oblivion was the first game that truly felt "next-gen", an experience that was full realizing the potential of the technical upgrade. Deep and surprisingly expansive, Oblivion brought the western style of roleplaying games to its full potential on the console, offering players a fully realized and customizable world that they could sink their teeth into more fully. The most shocking part of Oblivion was that it wasn't the main story quest that was the real selling point (which in reality was kinda meh), but rather the tons of side-missions, guilds and what John Davison refers to as the games "feeling of belonging." It was a single player world that acted as if you were interacting with other people. Daunting and inspiring, this was the game that rang in the then new generation of gaming.
2007: Super Mario Galaxy
Just as the reality of Wii being bogged down by pounds of junk became readily apparent, Nintendo proved why they are still among the most respected game developers, even among the most staunchly snobby "hardcore." Galaxy attained a feat that I though nigh impossible, besting Mario 64 as the best 3D platforming Mario game and invigorating the franchise into new, exciting directions. With its stylized art direction, constantly evolving play styles and perfect "pick up and play" dynamic, Galaxy was by far the most addictive gaming experience. More astonishing is how it stands out in a year of other exceptional games: 2007 is the best year of the current gen for me personally, with the Orange Box, Halo 3, Bioshock and Mass Effect all wowing, as well as hidden gems like Crackdown and Lost Planet. But for moment to moment fun and excitement, nothing compares to the excitement of a good Mario game.
2008: Dead Space
While Dead Space didn't reinvent anything, it handles everything it does so elegantly and perfectly that it is hard for me to think of any single game that impressed me more. The atmosphere of being deserted on the Ishimura was unlike anything I've experienced, and the game definitely never felt like a "just survival horror in space" game. This was EA and Visceral Games giving their all into a passion project that really offered a unique and memorable experience. Again, 2008 had many memorable experiences in gaming, but the dread and excitement of surviving the Necromorphs was among my most defining experiences in gaming for a while now.
2009 Prediciton: It is hard to say; as of right now, my nominee would be Street Fighter IV for pure compulsive pick up and playability. That said, I'm interested to see what Modern Warfare 2 has to offer as well as chomping at the bit for Brutal Legend. I am also sure some more games will be announced at E3 for this fall, as the current line-up is looking kinda thin.
2010: Mass Effect 2
Oh, neat idea. Keeping myself restricted to games that were actually released on current gen consoles, but I feel I ... [more]

EDIT: That better?
2005 - Dead or Alive 4 to meet the stipulation on this thread but it's really Jade Empire
2006 - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion | Runner-ups: Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Gears of War
2007 - Mass Effect | Runner-ups: Halo 3, The Orange Box, Heavenly Sword, BioShock
2008 - Persona 4 (even though I played it this year) | Runner-ups: Mirror's Edge, Tales of Vesperia, Left 4 Dead, Fable 2, Fallout 3 (2008 was the best year for this gen imo)
2009 - I'm predicting Dragon Age: Origins
2010 - Mass Effect 2 probably
Oh...this is gonna suck, since I can't recall my gaming history back to 05.
06: Kingdom Hearts 2. Can't remember much in 06, either, except that FF12 totally sucks.
07: Oh, crap! Two great games, both in my top 10 games ever. Gotta go with Super Mario Galaxy, since that's the one higher up.
08: Another hard one. I'd have to say Brawl, given how utterly awesome it is.
I definitely agree with Dead Rising. I still love that game! I really wasn't impressed with Halo 3, though. It was a lot better than the second one, but I still think the best of that series is the first one.
Haven't tried Lost Odyssey. I've heard good things, though.
2006 : Dead Rising/Oblivion (can't decide)
2007: Mass Effect
2008: Left4Dead
2009: Huxley (I have been waiting for this one for a VERY long time!)
I can't remember what came out what years so I may get the years wrong but...
2007 - Assassin's Creed
2008 - Prince of Persia / Metal Gear Solid 4
