Sure! This way they can have sham elections every 18 months as opposed to every 4 years!

It's always election season in Canada!

I will take a correction election every 18 months if necessary over being forced to be stuck with a world class moron for four years like it or not.  America's political system will never be as good as the Westminster system that good old England gave us.  Give me a Prime Minister over a President anytime.

....... and exactly how long does an American election last anyway?  About 2 years?  ..............

@oldschool: Hey, I'm no defender of American politics. I was just saying Canadian politics is different, but not any better.

And Prime Minister/President isn't really analogous it's:

Prime Minister/Congressional Majority Leader
President/Governor General

Give me an elected head of state over an unelected one any day.

The Prime Minister is the leader of the elected party.  The party is the ultimate power and at any time can depose their leader and install a new Prime Minister.  That is what makes the system work so well.  We are best served by a leader who must answer to his/her party.  It happens all the time (Brown in England, Keating in Australia) and the transition is always smooth (relatively).  We don't vote for a leader, we vote for the party (although you know who the leader of the party is).

The Governor-General is almost entirely a figure-head position and has no real power.  Sure, he can sack a government, but that is extremely rare and the main opposition is in power for a very short time whilst a new election is held.  The position isn't even close to that of President.  President in the Westminster system is much the same as President, not Congressional Senate Leader.

@oldschool: As I said, I'm no defender of how the American system operates, but structurally it has some strengths over the Canadian system, but the same is true in reverse in some instances.

However, I would argue the British model is not all that exemplary, when you consider the fact that Gordon Brown's Prime Ministership hasn't been approved by the electorate, and he's had power for 2 years.

Not only that, the powers our Parliament is given is kinda... well, fucked up is the only phrase I can think to describe it.

Every country has a War Measures Act, that's not my problem, but the fact that embedded in our country's charter of rights and freedoms is the declaration that none of our rights are inalienable, all are subject to continual parliamentary approval.

Now, like I said, America's no great example. They have a ratified legal document declaring the government's obligations to the freedoms outlined in said Constitution, but they've ignored the fact (for the last 8 decades or so) that the specific content of their Constitution is the defense of Individual Rights.

The ultimate problem is that in both countries, a successful manipulator of language and communication can wield unchecked power.

I edited for this part, which I have to answer.  The people don't vote for a Prime Minister, they vote for a political party and that includes any leader that it chooses.  That is how the system works and it is a good way to do it.  In essence, at the last election, England voted for the Labour Party and knew full well, just like any party in power in England, that the leader could be deposed by their party at anytime and the parliament would just continue (also true if they leave for personal reasons).  The alternative of the Prime Minister staying in power when the party has no support would lead to a debilitated government.  It is a system that has worked extremely well for a very long time (over 100 years in Australia).

I think most outsiders do not realise the way the Westminster system works, many of them in our own countries.  They confuse the role of the President and a Prime Minister, mainly because of countries that have a President and Prime Minister (like Russia).  Having effectively 2 leaders is a mistake.  They battle it out for power.  Having a Prime Minister as the most powerful leader and a figurehead person (Governor-General or King/Queen with no real power) works brilliantly.

As for politicians though, I am a socialist and have very little respect for them.  I don't believe any of us have a true democracy.  At best, we have a Democratic dictatorship - we vote in a party that will dictate to us for the next 3/4 years until we vote for another party to do the same thing.  There is too much congregation of power in the hands of the usual 2 parties in most western democracies who just share the power and do everything to ensure that they are the only ones that will lead.  I vote independent knowing that not enough people break out of the 2 party system when voting.

@PeasForFees: Uhh... dude, like 70% of us live within a few kilometres of the U.S. border. You're not going to find many non-Americanized Canadians.

Canada is an amalgam of British and American culture, but the British part comes through mostly politically.

Except Canadian Football has 3 downs, a larger field and it's twelve on twelve.

That's cool, I never watch "North American Football" either, I just noted the difference between the two. My sport of choice are motorsports.

My mistake, I thought you were American.

Also, the CFL may have been founded 1958, but has been played since before Confederation.
