Dude! What's up with Gamestop's price drop on titles like Uncharted 2, Brutal legend, and Demon's Souls (to name a few)? This is great for people who haven't bought them yet, but those of us who bought them day one are screwed. I bought Brutal Legend, and when I saw the price drop, I called Gamestop and asked if there was any refund offer for early purchasers. There isn't! Only two weeks have passed and the game gets a price drop. This is bullshit for early buyers. Speak up Giantbomb regulars, how do you feel about this?
New price is $49.99. As little as two weeks after its release. That might as well be a release price, if you ask me.

Let the buyer beware I guess.

How is this screwing over day one buyers? Price drops are common as hell now. You obviously wanted the game enough to buy it on day one, so you are going to get charged a premium for playing the game as early as possible, it's called an early adopter fee.

Yea, it does seem unfair, especially since they were encouraging early purchases with pre-order bonuses. Makes you wish that they held onto your pre-order for more than a couple of days.

What price drops? Do you mean the ones that are like 5 dollars for every used game? Or do you mean that they just advertised a price drop? Doesnt matter for Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend but for Demon's Souls I would love to see a price drop so I can finally buy it.

This is easily avoided by doing what you should have in the first place...

Do not buy games from Gamestop/EB

The price drops are $10 each for the ones he listed. I bought Uncharted 2 and believe it is worth every penny of the $60 I spent on it but the other games I would definitely pick up for those reduced prices. There is no problem with lowered prices. You paid to get it early (if ever so slightly) and now people who may not have gotten it at this time will buy it now because of the lowered price. No harm done!!

This is why if you think you'd prefer the game for less than what it's selling for when it's first release you should wait. Almost always a game will get a price drop or a temporary discount within a couple of weeks.

Just look at what they did on Steam. They released L4D for full prices, and about two weeks later they sell it for 50% off for a weekend. Imagine how ripped off I felt since I pre-ordered that game. Now I wait, just in case (unless it's a game I really want).

Thats Gamestop for you, this is one of the many reasons I don't buy anything from them.

This is a bit early for such big hit games, but considering all the big games available for the holidays, I think it's a good move. Don't feel too screwed. The games only got a $10 price drop. One thing I love about games these days, especially on the 360 side of things, is that games are dropping in price faster than ever. It's actually kind of rare for me to pay full price on a game these days, and I only buy them new. I just bought Uncharted 2 on Amazon about a week ago, and it was about $60, but they had a deal so that if you spend $80 or more, you get $40 off on your next game purchase. So now I'll be getting Modern Warfare for $20. Pretty darn awesome.

That's a pretty reasonable price drop but not too much to annoy early buyers (at least, it shouldn't). In fairness, early buyers do get to play the games earlier so I don't see why you people are getting annoyed.

If the price drop is nothing too drastic(<= $10), then I myself wouldn't worry about it.  I would pay $10 to play a game two weeks earlier.

I hope the Gamestop employee who took your call asking for a partial refund had a good laugh about it afterwards with his co workers. I know I would. It's absolute common sense to make a value judgement before you buy anything. You obviously didn't think you were paying too much when you parted with the cash in the first place so why get annoyed about it now?

It's called business. Sales drop, they drop the price. That's how it works. No-one forced you to buy it for $60. You knew the price was going to drop sooner or later, yet you bought it for $60.

You know what you get with the extra money you spent?  You get to play the game before those who waited.  Fair trade off, I believe.

Um yeah, if you looked closely, the price drop is ONLINE ONLY. Means that you can't roll up to the nearest gamestop and expect Uncharted 2 for $49.99. It's only if you order through them. I think that they are only doing it online so they can steal some customers away from amazon.com. So yeah just a price drop if you order it online from gamestop.com

I think the real question here is, "Why are you still doing business with Gamestop?"

I don't get how not buying things from Gamestop has anything to do with them lowering the prices after you bought it.  Because you bought a game at Best Buy it isn't as big of a deal that you could have saved money?  I don't get it.  Fix your broken logic and quit clouding your mind with that weird desire to hate Gamestop.

Further I'd say it is completely justified they lower the price after two weeks, and that this actually sort of makes that whole pre-order bonus thing make a little sense, those who buy it for full price on release get it two week ealier and a new level or costume.  Those who wait the two weeks save ten bucks, but miss out on a costume or toy or whatever they throw in.  It is a trade off and it is pretty fair, I'm totally willing to pay an extra ten bucks if I think the bonus is worth it and I'm totally willing to wait two weeks if I don't.

Meh, it's not as bad as what Apple did with their first Iphone.  Originally it was $600 and three months later they dropped it to $400.

Still, it feels a bit like deception, since they were encouraging people to buy the game early with pre-order bonuses. How else do you get the damn things?

It's a price drop. Be happy. It's not our fault you bought it at normal price. You act likes its some horrible crime the committed.

How about when you buy a Steam game and that weekend it goes on sale?

If you bought the game via Amazon, you would have saved $4 or $5 straight off and another $4 or $5 in sales tax. Price drops happen all the time. Especially if a title isn't doing as well as they thought it might do. Or if they're using it as a loss leader (Amazon is giving a $20 credit toward future purchases for pre-orders of Modern Warfare 2, for example).

If you were talking about a $20 price drop, I might be kind of upset as well, but I doubt that's the case here.

And the steam thing -- fucking aye! Aaaargh I hate that!

Oh - and if you're really pissed, just go buy another copy of the game at the cheap price. Don't open it. Leave it in the shrinkwrap. Then return that game using the *old* receipt so you'll get credited for full price (and since the game is unopened, there's no reason not to accept the return).

Well apparently they're selling Uncharted 2, Brutal Legend, and Demon's Souls cheaper than anywhere else.

It's kind of weird, are they trying to be a good videogame store?

@MB:
Alex Gray dude, I hate Gamestop as much as the next guy, but can't seem to get a better deal on my trade-ins anywhere else. Hell, forty bucks off Assassin's Creed 2, Uncharted 2, Dragon Age, or Modern Warfare 2 for two trade-ins! No one can beat that. My bottom line is forcing my hand. I'm trying to do more business through Gamefly, but they're really slow at rental turnarounds to make it a value-based option.

Hmm, haven't seen such a price drop in Canada. If you want price protection, Best Buy seems like a better bet.
