Replacing the worms with an original character

After some thinking, Josh and I agreed that it would be nice to create our very own character for the game we are making (see Part 1, above). We agree that it woould be a bad idea to base the game on worms. Therefore, we settled upon hamsters. So far, I have tried to characterize (or cartoonify, if you will) various hamsters. Here's what I have come up with so far:

I don't actually own my own hamster, so it's anatomical correctness is probably very shakey. I did google quite a few hamsters in the making of these.

User Interface

We have also made the UI-system more or less complete. It has lists, buttons, boxes, you name it. Here are some concepts of the UI (these were made while the game would still have the worms in it)




...and here's what the in-game UI actually looks like right now (the logo is placeholder, until we find a new name for the game):


New name

We're still not sure what we should name the game. If you have any suggestions, leaving them below would be much appreciated!

Not liking GB's "Parchment" editor for the blogs. Makes it a pain for me, in google chrome!

I dig the look of the hamster. However . . . boy, is that name not going to fly in this time when nobody understands the meaning of words and sidles up to every claim that something is insensitive.

So .... you made a Worms rip off?

Unless I'm missing something here, it looks a hell of a lot like worms.

Worms, like Angry Birds, is just a rip off of every artillery genre game dating back to the middle of the 1970s or even the text version of the artillery genre before that.

I still don't get this, do you KNOW you're making a Worms clone and you're just ignoring everyone? Or do you honestly think you've done enough differently that nobody's gonna notice?

And someone could have said the same to the creators of Worms. And could have said the same to the creators of Angry Birds (who did even less to creatively separate themselves from the genre than Worms did). So, really, "you're just making something that already exists" only matters if you aren't interested in becoming incredibly wealthy. Success and riches today aren't about making something fantastic and new for the guy who has been playing games for two or three decades. It's re-hashing what has existed for two or three decades and slapping it onto an iPhone or iPad for the rest of the population who never plays games.

@I_smell: Except we're not. I, Josh, have never played a worms game. Ever. Though that is where Mordi's original inspiration came from, we are TRYING to make the game our own. Do you have any suggestions? Or is everyone around here going to constantly tell us what we already know and are trying to fix.

I'll try to clarify; we've made several real-time shooters with the worms-character years ago, and we originally intended to do so again. However, now we've decided to replace the worms with hamsters. The worm in the mockup is there because I made that while we were still making a game with worms. The name "Pinktards" (and the logo, naturally) will also be done away with, and the game will have a new name. We haven't settled for a name yet, so that's why the old logo is there still - as a placeholder.

I think Hamsters are a damn smart idea - cute, identifiable, easy to anthropomorphise, and might still have a little viral/meme cred from the Hamster Dance shite from years ago.

Man, I keep thinking I should get involved in making an app or something, but there aren't too many that need in-depth narratives or character dialogue haha.

If you go to a game-development forum you can probably find someone who needs some writing done, if you want to help out with that sort of thing. There are a lot of gamedev forums, though.
