Nintendo has won this generation well beyond console sales.

@oldschool:  Good on ya. From a business point of view Nintendo have really hit the money and its with the way they've always done business.
It was quite clever really, simply refocus the business towards a much larger audience then give them something appealing to grab their attention.

I still don't like waggling a remote at the screen to do some dull task, I don't think any developer has really used the Wii mote to it's full potential.

To anyone complaining about hardcore titles etc, Nintendo have clearly had to cater more towards the majority of the audience and they still release a more core franchise title atleast on a yearly basis. Us as an audience for the wii is in the minority and it's not smart business sense to cater solely for the minority.

Sports games, Zack&Wiki, the Rabbids-series and Smooth Moves, Force Unleashed, Call of Duty, RE4, MadWorld, No More Heroes, Wario Land, the NPC series, MP3:C, SSX Blur, Kororinpa, Boom Blox BB, Excitebots, Marvel: UA, Tomb Raider, Kororinpa, Godfather Blackhand, DBZ...  there are several games that use the Wiimote's motion sensing to "it's full potential"; Especially considering that the Wiimote + Nunchuck can only detect tilt, rotation, shaking and jabs in a certain direction (which is faulty and, when combined with tilt information, rarely work), these games do a great job of working with that.
On top of that is the squadron of games that rock because of the IR pointer and it's depth information.
Trivia: The IR camera is the most expensive piece of hardware in the 'mote.

The Wiimote hardware is worse than what was advertised and it was not used in games like Nintendo made us believe they would, and that's disappointing. No doubt about that. But devs have regularly been doing good stuff with what is available.

@Meowayne: You misunderstand me, I know the hardware is fairly basic but conceptually you could do a lot to enhance the experience. The new silent hill for instance uses it in a very direct, obvious way that's not too intrusive and it seems like it could really bring the player closer to the experience.

To be fair, the original Wii-mote wasn't very good, but Nintendo seemed to realize that and now the Motion Plus is coming.  Having said that it still offered experiences people that had never wanted to play games could get into, while maybe you didn't HAVE to do a full swing in most of the Wii Sports, the fact you could mimic real life and for the game to basically do what you intended was huge.   I for one am glad motion controls are now becoming the norm, I've always dug stuff like the Steel Battallion controller, or light gun games, or that Eye of Judgment game, now those fun and unique experiences can be more than a once every few years thing.   But Nintendo fell once, and it's possible it will happen again, Nintendo has misstepped before.  I think both Sony and MS made the right choice in joining the party now, instead of waiting till next gen like I thought they might.

" The thing on the gamesfront is, a large portion of the Wii audience is uneducated, when it comes to games quality. They will buy shovelware. And they won't care, because they don't know any better. Also,  there are very confining boundries set by the Wii hardware, in regard to the production quality. The combination is deadly for premium content on the Wii. Even the premium content made by Nintendo is undeniably of lesser production quality, than most premium productions on the other platforms.Non the less, there are fun games to be had on the Wii. They just aren't this generations highlights anymore. They are yesteryears Nintendo classics, repackaged with motion controls, on a system, where yesteryears classics are tomorrows top sellers. How do you compete with Mario, Link and Samus for yesteryears best gaming experiences? Well, you won't and you can't. At the very most, 3rd party publishers on Wii can hope to dig into Nintendos marketshare of sales by producing stuff like 'Kingdom Hearts'. Going after the 'for the whole family' market with family friendly IPs and franchises. In addition to that, they can and will successfully tackle the fitness and sports sector. Premium productions of other genres are doomed to fail. It is even very likely, that a premium production quality doesn't do enough for the sales. The only way to fix this, is for Nintendo to actively educate their audience about good games on the Wii. Something like 'Nintendos Choice'. Nintendo pushing 3rd party premium productions by attaching the Nintendo brand and chipping into the advertisment with Nintendo dime. Even then, the hardware limitation of production quality will remain as an ugly bottleneck this generation, and that won't change, unless Nintendo has something like 'OnLive' up their sleves, which I don't hold my breath for. Nintendo can do something about premium 3rd party games not selling on Wii. That doesn't change however, how most of the core audience feels about Wii games, because of their limited production quality.Wii games are stuck in the past. A sad fact. That is how Nintendo betrayed the art form of video games. That is, how they won the sales race this far, and that's how they lost their way. "
Can you blame Nintendo (or anyone else) for the gaming education of their audience? Not really. It's an unavoidable by-product of drawing in a huge number of new people to gaming.I don't see any 'lesser production quality' in Nintendo's games for this console. In fact that has always been Nintendo's hallmark - incredibly polished games with no rough edges, and they continue to deliver that quality guarantee in my opinion, even in the games that miss the mark for me. I'm guessing you're actually talking about graphics here, and there's no doubt the Wii doesn't match the other consoles there, but to major on that aspect is really missing the point about the console imo. Nintendo's games are as good as they ever were in my opinion, and I'm pretty convinced that the so-called 'core gamer' is as well serviced by Nintendo as it ever was in the N64 and Gamecube days. I'd like to see a list of Nintendo's releases on their previous consoles alongside their releases on the Wii - for example what franchise that was on the gamecube hasn't made it to the Wii? I can't think of one. It's the third parties that haven't contributed. You say that "premium productions of other genres are doomed to fail" - I agree with you partly that this was the perception at first on the Wii. Many of the big third-parties basically ignored the console as an aberration, but now there seems to be a momentum towards delivering the quality titles we find on other consoles. New Res Evil and Deadspace titles, Madworld etc. I do agree that third-parties have been incredibly slow to come to terms with the Wii though, though I should add that I don't see how that could possibly be Nintendo's fault. Nintendo didn't ask the big third-parties to ignore the Wii, and nor did they create the cheaply produced games that have filled that gap in the meantime.I think the problem has been that it's hard for third party developers to develop cross-platform titles for the Wii, because it is a special console with its own controller and specs. But I think we're going to see a massive shift over the next two years, because developers simply gravitate towards the market leader. It's simply good business practise. "
There are actually a number of Nintendo franchises that appeared on the Cube but havent made it to the Wii yet.

These are the one's we've gotten so far, that also had an entry on the cube. let me know if i'm forgetting any
Super Smash Brothers
Metroid Prime
Zelda
Super Mario
Fire Emblem
Battalion Wars

Heres the ones we haven't gotten yet
F-Zero
Starfox
1080
Wave Race
Geist
Custom Robo
Donkey Kong (technically the port of jungle beat made its way to wii)
Kirby
Pikmin (technically the port of 1 and 2 came to Wii)

However, we've gotten a number of Nintendo franchises that didnt appear on the cube, and a few brand new IPs
Punch Out!!
Sin and Punishment 2
Wii Sports
ExciteTruck
ExciteBots
and there is plenty of time for Nintendo to address some of the franchises they havent gotten to yet. Until then i'll spend every TGS, GDC, and E3 crossing my fingers for F-zero, Starfox, and 1080

Say what you will about the Wii, but Nintendo obviously did something right....apparent from the sudden flight to motion technology by both Sony and M$. Yea, there are not a lot of games where you mindlessly blow people's heads off with shotguns, but there are quality games. The Wii has its own niche; for violent fun I turn on my 360, for everything else I turn to the Wii.

@AgentJ: I'll buy a new Wii when they bring a good F-zero title out and a proper 1080 title. I had one for a short period of time but there wasn't the high enough frequency of games that I would've liked to have, that's purely personal taste though.

Nintendo only have to release a black Wii in the West and that see another severe sales spike, and this while Microsoft and Sony adhere closely to more complex strategies, to get sales increases on their respective consoles. That black Wii coming out here is like a dark cloud over the others, lol. What makes it worse is hearing Iwata bang on about how Nintendo not finished tying up the audience for the future. Hearing what he had to say was scary shiz as a Nintendo fan... I do know great games are coming, but still, I do continue to wonder how long I will I have to wait for these games from them, that I really want.

Interestingly, that Wii is coming out with Monster Hunter Tri, I get the clear impression it's meant to shake off the kiddy stigma in doing so. Expect Japan to go fucking insane when that hits, forget  Dragin the same old game, Quest, I think people are going to see the biggest Japanese games event in many years when that thing launches.

Yeah, that i dont agree with so much. Loved Melee, but in all aspects except for one (the stupid random character slipping) Brawl was superior.

@AgentJ: Yeah I guess it's just personal preference then, Brawl did add a heck of a lot.

I'm surprised they haven't announced a new Star fox with the current trend of rail shooters being released.

My guess is that we may see Starfox sometime after Sin and Punishment 2 comes out. they play similarly so releasing both in a similar time frame would cause both to sell fewer copies.

No one is saying that the wii is the best console...

You honestly think the "winner" is the company who sells the most, not the one with the best games?

Ahem is right. Namco has done good things, but they should stay a football field away from starfox at all times.

Sales? Yeah, Nintendo is winning (not won) by a longshot, but the quality of games? Nintendo is losing. I don't blame Nintendo for going after a child/mom friendly market, there is a lot of free money floating around in that particular area, but it seems they have forgotten their original audience. Nintendo are the innovators of the whole motion control movement, but the way it is currently being used by the majority of 1st and 3rd party developers on the Wii is quite the opposite of innovative. Laughable, at the most.
