It gives you more control, instead of being a bystander to horrific events?

I can't stand neither.

Well fear is a non-painful rush.

It's Masochist Junior

If you put it that way, it does make sense. Adrenaline is the greatest drug and your own fear produces it.

Honestly think about it though.... because besides the slight 'jump' you get at not being aware of something about to happen..I don't see how anyone can say they've ever been  scared, truly of any film or game. And I only have an interest in horror games that have decent combat and is actually somewhat fun..RE4, and Dead Space are the only horror themed games(though they are mostly just shooters) that I've liked, just because the combat and things that happened throughout the games are really awesome...fuck that early RE shit with the static camera angles and tank moving..that doesn't make it more 'scary' it simply makes it intolerable to play, and not fun the least bit. Like most JRPGs that still do turn base combat, they just put the focus on their standard teen emo retarded plot, and the combat is an afterthought.

If a game only makes you jump, it is not a true horror game. To be a horror game, the game has to instill a fear in you that will make you sweat, it will make you nervous and jump at sounds that aren't even there. It will make you cautious, jack up your heart beat, and maybe even make you want to stop playing. A la, Condemned: Criminal Origins.

You ever seen Last King of Scotland?  That movie scares me shitless...just because the man actually existed...and was in a seat of power.

I watched the first two Lord of the Rings films in their extended forms without falling asleep and that's pretty masochistic, but as for horror films, it does fall into some form of masochism, just a very light one.

You're an adrenaline junkie. It's all just an addiction to the rush you get from being afraid.

I'm no dare devil, but I do love roller coasters and one day I would love to sky dive. So maybe, that could be an accurate description.

Thats exactly what I was explaining to you though..I just don't feel that from games, any of them..or amovie ever. Its always just "didn't see that coming" kinda startle moments..I honestly never knew anyone who ever was truly scared of something in a game. I loved the condemned games and I think they are some of the best of the type(plus real satisfying bonebreaking combat) but I never felt like that playing them. It comes down to more than just startling jumps though I know, they have to have the atmosphere feel right, and great sound design definitely helps that.

To each his own, I loved Condemned's atmosphere.

I don't find being afraid to be a painful experience at all. There is no game or movie or book that would make me fear for my well being, which would be unpleasant, but there are plenty of terrible stories and games that make me feel kind of the opposite of ecstatic, I guess. After watching The Myst, for instance. I don't think the movie was particularly scary, but I quite enjoyed the ending. I wasn't extremely happy but it forced me to think, and whatever the feeling was I enjoyed it.

***SPOILER***

Sir, W is nothing compared to Idi Amin.  That muthafucker sewed his wife's limbs back on incorrectly, putting the legs where the arms go and the arms where the legs go...and then put her body on public display.  That's one fucked up dood.  Granted, the real life story has never been "confirmed", but there are many that say it was true.  =  /
Besides, W was a shit movie anyways.  Definitely not worth the money to make it, let alone the time to make it.  I like that Oliver Stone TRIED to be objective in his views while not TRYING to sway to his leftist ways...but he did anyways.

Back on topic now...

Is horror masochistic?  Yep.  Would I rather horror be masochistic than humans be masochistic?  Yep.

To be honest, I like being scared in video games because it tricks my brain into thinking that the actual scary things aren't as.  Bravery training ftw!
Ahh..what am I saying.  I go to the haunted house things they have during halloween time.  Speaking of that... there's probably some open now.  Hmm... gonna call some friends tomorrow...
