That reviewers aren't that much better than the rest of us at games.  Case in point, Burnout.  Jeff is okay but from what ive seen i actually am better at it than him. (and my 10 year old little brother could beat us both).

Their job is not to be skillful at the games; their job is to tell people whether or not they're worth buying.

I've always stereotyped reviewers to suck at games...

Reviewers are gamers just like all of us. We all have games that we're good at, some that we're decent at, and others we're terrible at.

I mean Jeff plays tons of other games besides Burnout, so the fact that you or your little brother may be better than him could mean that you too just play Burnout more than he does.  And who knows how much Burnout he played that was close to the same time of his review.  I know that I have to drive around Paradise before I can really start.

I bet Jeff kicks some serious ass in fighting games.  That seems to be his genre of preference.

For sure, wouldn't want to go up against him on SFIV that's for sure!

As for the topic, does it even matter?

Well, the GB crew are all pretty decent at the games they play. Jeff is a big fighting game fan, so that is probably his specialty. The other guys all have games and overall genres that they are good at too.

Still, it is not their job to be really good at games; their job is to be able to express their opinions in a way that will benefit other people who play games. They help people with decisions on what games to play, and, of course, they are also just awesome.

It could be that when playing quick looks they aren't really too interested in playing their best but rather showing you as much as possible due to the limited time they have to record them :)

Playing a game at home by youself and playing a game with other people around while at work being recorded and commentating on it are 2 very different things

this is why they are celled reviewers and not professional gamers

I'm sure they didn't bring there "A-Game" for a quick-look bro.

Yea. If you're like me, multi-tasking is a bit difficult. At least trying to inform viewers and trying to play. If you're just chatting with a friend, it's completely different.

Yep. I used to be pretty good (if I say so myself) at COD2 PC and played it even after Modern Warfare was out. Anyways, my bro and his mate came around so when I put the game on I couldn't kill anyone. When you're playing a game properly you get into the 'zone' and you can't always do that if your mind's busy on other things like commentating. I'm usual totally fine when I'm on the mic with people I can still play OK but to be my best I need to be not talking and on my own.

Lol.

Why does it even matter?  Does a reviewer's skill at a genre or a game mean that they are unqualified to offer a critique?  A good review will take that into account and adjust their rating to reflect their audience.  Do you think a review would be any better from someone who finds "legendary" difficulty a snap?  Perhaps an "it's too easy" a comment from them would turn you away from a game that you might find challenging.  I think it's great that you and your 10 year old brother would likely beat Jeff at Burnout.  Games are supposed to be fun for us all regardless of innate or learned skill level.

If you haven't learned this little lesson yet, I'm going to share something with you...no matter what you do in life, there will always be someone out there who is better at it than you.

Just because they are a reviewer doesn't mean they are super fantastic awesome at all games in existence..

Try talking and playing a game at the same time.

They aren't focused when playing the games especially on QL.

Silly silly.

Jeff and the Giant Bomb crew seem decidedly worse at games than me, but that's nothing I didn't already know.

They finish a game and then move on, they don't have all the time in the world to play and get great at those games...

Dood, it's not like they have all the time in the world to sit around and just play the shit out of every game to be incredibly expert at them all!  Hell, most of the Quick Looks are games that just came out, so it's new to them the same it would be new to you.

What, are you saying you're absolutely pro at every game you play when you first start playing it?  I'm pretty damn good at video games, but I'm not going to sit back and say that I'm pro at the beginning no matter what.

Another thing to note, they have to play a wide range of games and just can't play 2 or 3 games. So they never really have time to get super great at them because they have to move onto something new for reviewing purposes.

I bet Jeff kicked some ass at CoD 4 during his unemployment days.
