@winternet: Sure you can. If the personalities of the protagonists lessen your enjoyment of the game, they're making the game worse.

That said, The Escapist's argument of "only buy Grand Theft Auto V if you're prepared to play as characters with no justifiable motivation for doing awful things to people." is a pretty shitty argument to make.
Considering what I've played of the story, it's also just wrong.
It's also something that should be clear when looking at the title or even reading a 1 sentence description of the game.
What the hell is a 9.75? And again with the misogynist angle quip from Polygon.
Thats when they dont want to give it a 10/10 because that'd be overboard but still want to give it a 10/10 they just dont want to look like they're giving it a 10/10.

It's also something that should be clear when looking at the title or even reading a 1 sentence description of the game. Plus it's not clear whether you're supposed to revel in the characters' awfulness or be disgusted by it. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
@winternet: Sure you can. If the personalities of the protagonists lessen your enjoyment of the game, they're making the game worse.
No, they're making the game less enjoyable. I find that to be two distinct things. Just because I'm not enjoying it, doesn't mean that the game is bad. Especially when the reason for not enjoying it is something like "bad people are bad".
@winternet: So it's less enjoyable, but that somehow doesn't make the game worse? If the characters are an important aspect of a game and they don't come across well, hampering the experience for the player, they're making the game worse.
I'm really fascinated by the thing with Polygon. I mean, it does look like the misogynistic perception and political correctness played into the score. The reviewer straight up said he felt "nauseated" by those parts. Seems like McElroy is on twitter pushing back on that, even though it seems accurate that it's what happened.
The comments section of the review is is also pretty funny.

Heh, so a 0.25 deduction for "you can do better".

They can also change the score, so leaving room for GTA Online?
I want to see a 7.5. I want to watch the world burn.

It's like going to watch schindler's list and then complaining that it had nazis.
@bocam: It's not impossible to write an open world crime game with protagonists that aren't assholes. Also, Godwin's Law already?
Perhaps they wanted the criminals who do awful things to be awful people? He does have a point.
I mean do you want the characters to be believable or do you want to complain about characters behaving and acting differently with that narrative dissonance people complain about so much? You can't have it both ways.
Just a reminder to you guys. Stay away from the youtube comment section. Don't be like me where I've read a spoiler and got upset. Apparently theirs assholes that likes to ruin plots, but its to be expected.

Of course not. I mean Hell, that's undoubtedly why people found Niko to be so endearing in GTA IV and John Marston in RDR, but this is GTA V. An open-world crime game starring a trio of assholes. Just because they're all (apparently, since I haven't played it yet) scum doesn't mean they're bad characters; it's like if someone started reviewing Breaking Bad episodes harshly because they thought Walter was too much of a meanie.
@clonedzero: Lara was FORCING me to undress her with my eyes! It wasn't my fault!
Welp, somebody created a petition to get the Gamespot reviewer fired because of the GTA V review. Seems like good times all around. Thankfully I couldn't care less about GTA V so I just relax, smile and look at the madness.

The internet is full right now of people bashing her because she's transgender.

"Don't buy this game about criminals if you think criminals are criminals." -The Escapist
You're missing the point. Just because a character is an criminal doesn't automatically make them not likable. A character can do bad things but still feel justified in their actions. If a character is doing shitty things just for the sake of doing shitty things, then that's a poorly written character. That's the point The Escapist is making.
And yes, HOW DARE GameSpot and Polygon write about the game's portrayal of women. Where do those guys get off having an opinion on something that lessens their enjoyment of the game?
Internet commentators are way more predictable than any game reviewer.

Some of the comments are straight up ridiculous. They keep saying how this review is not objective. As if objective game reviews exist.
Am i going to far to say that these people need to be "removed" from society in order for us to move forward as a people?

What happened to the "some men just want to watch the world burn"?
I am not looking forward to reading any GTA V reviews. I am looking forward to reading comments below GTA V reviews, and drown in the crazy.

This sums me up well. I am also looking forward to playing this game myself.
Ok, I hope I can get my true feelings out here without coming off like an asshole, but here goes.
GTA has always been a series about glorifying the machismo, thug, fantasy. It is sort of a known quantity. Gamespot knows this this. Now, while I don't personally care about review scores, I do sort of wonder what sort of reaction they expected when they placed Carolyn Petit in charge of the review and then have her mention misogyny as one of the negative aspects of the game.
I mean, I understand Petit's struggles and the harsh comments she has to deal with. But what do either she or her employer expect the Internet's reaction to be when they place a transexual in charge of a Grand Theft Auto review and then have her mention the game's lack of political correctness repeatedly in the review? I mean, it almost seems like they were just trolling for a reaction.

Yeah, I was reading his tweets earlier, and he was talking about how they don't start at a 10 and deduct points. So instead of deducting a 0.5 from a 10 because of sexism, sexism stopped it from going from a 9.5 to a 10. Either way, it looks like this was the issue that cost it 0.5, because that was the only real negative I saw in the written review.
I don't really care about any of the reviews. I had already pre-ordered the game and don't need others' opinions to justify my purchase or any enjoyment I may have. I just found it funny how he was trying to spin this.

NICE

What happened to the "some men just want to watch the world burn"?
The site just ate my post...great. What I was GOING to say was...
Those "men who just want to watch the world burn" are typically the antagonist in the story and those kind of characters can certainly be effective in their own right but as a protagonist, I can see how someone who just a piece of shit for no reason other than being a piece of shit could create a disconnect and in turn make the story less interesting.
Walter White does terrible things in Breaking Bad but they are all justified within his character, even if you may not necessarily agree with those justifications. To him, as a character, what he's doing is for some sort of greater good. If Walt just ran around shooting people in the head because it was fun, he would a pretty bad character, I think.
Can't believe some people got upset when GTA V got a 9 from gamespot.
From what I can tell, it's not the 9 people are upset about. It's the "misogyny in muh vidya" bullshit cropping up again.

People are also upset about what they call a "freak" being the reviewer.
Point seven five. That's the worst review of the bunch just because of that. That's silly. Just straight up silly.

If a character is doing shitty things just for the sake of doing shitty things, then that's a poorly written character.
While I agree that no one is obligated to like a certain character/story element, saying that a shitty character doing shitty things for the hell of it is automatically a poorly written character is, in my opinion, incorrect. Sometimes it can be engaging, at least for me, to be alienated from someone rather than attached to them.

If you are mad about a video game review then you need to re-evaluate your life.
@animasta: Well, thanks for that.
If Gamespot put Petit in charge of a Call of Duty review and a criticism was that there were too many guns or too much shooting, what do you think the reaction would be? Or a driving game having too much driving?
I guess my opinion is simply that Gamespot created a situation where none needed to exist.
