Haven't played it, but from what I saw, nothing about that is satirical. What is being subverted? What's the message? If you just do the same thing as what you are supposedly satirizing, or even go further with it, that doesn't make it satire. Maybe that was your goal, but you didn't achieve it so it doesn't matter.

James Bond didn't give girls gifts and he doesn't stare at their bodies and try to not let them notice him doing so. So they made it more Japanese porn game.... okay? There is nothing satirical about that.

While I agree with you on some parts (specifically, that this feels more like a straight example of dating games instead of a failed attempt at parodying and subverting them), I feel like I should leave this here, since its pretty good a response to your (our ?) position:

Poe's law: Without a blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of extremism or fundamentalism that someone won't mistake for the real thing.

Just started playing it. I'm a fan of japanese VA but man, why include it when you're lip syncing the american VA.

Dragon Age has the same gift giving mechanic as Killer is Dead and no one gave that shit.

The difference is that you're not ogling your potential partner, like a creep.

Having finally gotten the game I can tell you that it's really much more silly rather than creepy. Honestly I don't know what to say about people that took a tremendous amount of offense from the minigame. Everything about it is so deliberately exaggerated that only a fool would even mention misogyny. One thing you can say is that this isn't a game as much as an experience, and an extremely weird one at that.

So is there an actual dialogue while you're sizing the ladies up? Or is it just silent staring?

@greggd: It's not silent but there is inconsequential dialog in the way of the girl making short remarks once in a while, while you gawk. It's just completely ridiculous: on the left your meter is shaped like a brain and is called the "Guts meter" and fills with blood as you gain points. So the girl kinda mutters to herself and when she stares off into the distance (contemplating how dreamy Mondo is probably) you need to quickly look at her breasts or thighs before she looks back in your direction. If she catches you oogling her then you can quickly look away to break eye contact in order for your meter to not take a hit. It's the sort of ridiculous where a tool tip in the loading screen advises that you can "risk" maintaining eye contact to establish a connection with the girl and win bonus points - like actually looking at the girls face is a risky proposition. Once the meter fills up, your "guts meter" that is, you gather up the courage and are able to present the girl with a gift, which raises some sort of meter of her own, I forgot the name.

It's all really hokey and silly. I get how someone might not see the "humor" in it or at a stretch find it distasteful. I mean there are funny sound clips, Mondo grunts in weird ways, the girl sighs and swoons in the most exaggerated manner imaginable. I just don't think this should have raised any sort of controversy - Suda 51 doesn't hate women.

I never said Suda hates women. I actually think he likes them a little too much. But hey, who am I to judge. Anyway, that minigame sounds boring, if not creepy. I dunno, I'm somehow more offended at how boring this whole game sounds than any of its actual content.

@greggd: Thats the rub. That mini-game IS boring, although it doesn't take too long to fill the meter it is steeped in classic Japanese repetition. The game from what I've played of it doesn't even seem like a game. As I mentioned earlier it's like this experience. Some missions were literally 2 minutes long and you encounter 3 enemies along the way. There is this crazy story that unfolds along the way and nothing at all is explained. You are dropped into this world, kind of like how Frank Herbert dropped you into the world of Dune without ever going into mundane details of how a Thopter or a lasgun look like - these things were just mentioned. If you want to experience something completely weird and different, yet still draped over this "videogame" framework then this is definitely it - just don't go in expecting a laser focused game experience like God of War.

Had tons of fun playing Killer is Dead. The main game wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Visually, I thought the game looks astounding albeit the occasional screen tearing. In terms of controls, I would've liked if it was tighter. Swordplay comes of a tad bit sluggish for an assassin main character, gunplay can be a bit inaccurate, but it isn't broken. Storyline wise, it was quite confusing for me, or maybe I just didn't put enough attention. There's an upgrade system i.e. purchase and upgrade sword skills, upgrading health and upgrading sub-weapons. Missions are replayable in any difficulty after finishing the main storyline, so there is a form of replayability.

But the Mondo-Girls optional missions were really lame. It didn't bother me personally, I'm okay with it. Tho optional, its the only way of getting the sub-weapons in this game. I stuck with it just enough to get all the sub weapons, then i stopped because it became too much of a chore to play such a boring minigame.

Finished the first 3 or 4 levels. The game is garbage, the dialogue is garbage and the gigolo missions are boring
