I heard Patrick talking on the Bombcast about how he can't believe Jeff's favorite Metal Gear games are 2 and 4. Mine are too. I forgot to add Portable Ops, but let's not be crazy.

3 is the only and correct answer.

#3 Posted by Video_Game_King (36566 posts) -

3, because it's the only one I remember, what with me having played it a few months back.

#4 Posted by LiquidPrince (16508 posts) -

3 and 4.

#5 Posted by Fearbeard (865 posts) -

The first one... I never played 2 and 3, and thought 4 was awful.

I never played 2 and 3, and thought 4 was awful.

Maybe the first clause is why?

#7 Posted by ArtelinaRose (1912 posts) -

oh gosh uhhh

1 holds the most nostalgia for me, 2 is weird but it's an interesting journey, 3 is probably one of the best experiences in video games, 4 was a perfect love letter and a perfect send off to fans of the Solid storyline, but Peace Walker is just so good. So much game in that one. THIS IS SO HARD

MGS3 by far. Though it was undoubtedly ahead of its time, so it's a little difficult to go back to. But even still, I can't help but love everything about it, even if some aspects are more so in theory than execution. It's got the best boss battles, best story (including best ending), best setting, most intriguing gameplay design elements, best Snake -- it's got it all!

3, 4, 1, 2

#10 Edited by Azurath (352 posts) -

This some kind of joke?

Snake Eater is possibly the best PS2 game ever.

#11 Posted by JZ (2343 posts) -

3, but the HD version of peace walker is kinda awesome too.

#12 Posted by JZ (2343 posts) -

The crazy part of peace walker is that it's a full on mgs 5 level of game.

#13 Edited by ArtisanBreads (4844 posts) -

1 was the most mindblowing at the time, but 3 is the best game.

#14 Edited by GERALTITUDE (4531 posts) -

And then... ghost babel.

#15 Edited by thebunnyhunter (1520 posts) -

MGS3: Snake Eater is the best "Solid" game, have you heard that theme song? That game is truly awesome. I should buy the HD collection to play it again...and to finally finish Peace Walker (thanks dead psp)

If i had to choose any "Metal Gear" game though it would be Ac!d, i dont really know why i love that game so much but i could play that for ever

I actually listen to that song all the time. Apparently there's a vinyl version.

Would kill for it.

3 is fucking incredible. I'm luke warm on the rest of the series at this point, but that game still remains a masterpiece in my eyes.

#18 Edited by MightyDuck (1622 posts) -

The original is still my favorite. I remember being blown away by it when I first rented it on my PS1.

#19 Edited by Vextroid (1467 posts) -

Definitely the first game. Just blew my mind as kid when I first played it. 2 is a very close second.

#20 Posted by MikkaQ (10296 posts) -

I can't really choose between 2 and 3, but it's one of those.

#21 Posted by Camoufrage (91 posts) -

Can't go wrong with the original. MGS3 is just as good, but the original just has a much better feel. Plus the more vanilla and simplified stealth mechanic feels better in my opinion.

#22 Edited by crusader8463 (14755 posts) -

I never enjoyed any of them. I played the demo for 2, and even bought 3 but I just couldn't get into the gameplay and none of the characters or settings did anything for me. Plus I have heard enough people talking about it over the years that I picked up pretty much the whole game so I can't be bothered to try and get into it now.

#23 Edited by joshthebear (2704 posts) -

The first is still the most memorable to me.

#24 Edited by Guided_By_Tigers (8020 posts) -

Peace Walker followed closely by 2 and 1.

#25 Posted by Demoskinos (16422 posts) -

The first will always be the most memorable to me. The Psycho Mantis boss fight was on a entirely another level from what any other game in that era was doing. It was mind blowing for the time.

#26 Posted by mrfluke (5676 posts) -

3, in my opinion, its one of the best stories ive seen in a game.

#27 Posted by AlexW00d (6799 posts) -

All of them. As a series. Except peace walker cause I still haven't played it.

#28 Posted by Humanity (11828 posts) -

MGS3 is good but I think highly overrated. A lot of that game was kind of boring jungle crawls, especially if you played it because Subsistence came out and there was no camera control forcing you to crawl on your belly and pop up in first person once in a while to scope out the situation. Realistic portrayal of sneaking through a jungle maybe, not necessarily fun to play.

#29 Posted by BoOzak (1047 posts) -

MGS2, I prefered the story and tone of the first game but the mechanics of the second made it great. Twin Snakes would be my favourite if it werent for the crazy cutscenes (which were cool but kind of bizzare given the tone) and the simple level design made first person view pointless.

I remember being really let down by 3 at the time. I loved the cinematics (as always with MGS) but I didnt like the setting as much. Also i've only really played the original version which had a terrible camera (you had to press up on the right thumbstick to see in front of you if I remember) which would be okay if you had some sort of radar, but nope. You've got camo, which you have to swap out every couple minutes if you want to do stealth right.

Anyway, i've got the HD collection now so maby my opinion will change after i've played subsistance. But as someone who really liked the first two games 3 felt more like Pandora Tomorrow to me than MGS. Even though I hated the new control scheme in 4 it still felt like more of an MGS game.

2>1>4>3>PW (yes i've played Peace Walker, I just didnt think it was worth mentioning)

#30 Posted by Zero_ (2016 posts) -

I'm a big MGS fan. I honestly think MGS3 has the best ending to anything, ever. Deadly serious.

It's a hard choice, since there is a such split between the quality of the cinematics and the quality of the gameplay across the games. MGS3 for example, I love the camouflage and survival systems, and the boss fights are some of the most memorable of any game, but most of the exposition intersections drag on far too long, and there are multiple instances of them going over details they've already explained, which is something I cannot stand. I feel like MGS1 actually had the best balance of gameplay to cinematics, but then the stealth action was nothing special and at points was outright terrible, especially the close quarters confrontations where the camera and controls got in the way. MGS2 vastly improved on the gameplay, but then there were the repetitive environments and some awful boss fights. The more I think about the more I lean towards MGS4.

Metal Gear Solid 4, all day every day. It's just so epic.

3 > 2 > 1 > 4 > PW > PO

@geraltitude: Fuck and YES Ghost Babel!!! That game was crazy awesome!!! I remember picking up a new clear gameboy pocket color and that game and being thrilled! Man, nostalgia trip for sure! Hmmm...now where did i put that gameboy emulator?

#35 Posted by AkihikoSenpai (38 posts) -

But the series ends up being more than the sum of it's parts, the games compliment each other like no other games ever.

#36 Edited by Danteveli (1314 posts) -

First one is my favorite for the nostalgia reasons. Third one is the best MGS and Peace Walker followed by 4 are the least favorite.

#37 Edited by PolygonSlayer (445 posts) -

MGS3 and then Peace Walker a close second for me.

#38 Edited by Pikawai (137 posts) -

Metal Gear Solid! It's my favorite game of all time, it really did left a huge impact on me when I first played it on PS1, and years later I still remember my playing session.Truly loved it.

#39 Edited by Discoman (181 posts) -

MGS2: Substance struck the perfect balance between stealth and action. It is where the series should have ended.

The rest would go like 1> 3 > 4

I've never played 4, but I saw a run through and couldn't stop cringing.

#40 Posted by wwfundertaker (1476 posts) -

MGS and MGS 2 are my favourite games.

#41 Posted by StrikeALight (1129 posts) -

Numero Uno.

#42 Posted by mtcantor (966 posts) -

3 - 1 - 2 - 4

#43 Posted by Benny (2007 posts) -

Gotta be 2 for me. The sheer insanity of the story, the gameplay, the frame rate, the sword fight on top of Federal Hall, I feel like one of the few people who actually likes playing as Raiden so you can appreciate how much of a badass snake is and can contact him via codec instead of playing as him to understand his character better.

I only like 2 ever so slightly more than 3 though. CQC as a thing was just about the coolest thing ever.

#44 Posted by Cyrus_Saren (553 posts) -

All of them are great but I'm going to have to go with 2 being my all time favorite.

#45 Posted by MikeJFlick (452 posts) -

It's hard to say, Snake Eater was without a doubt a huge jump in gameplay features, but MGS4 was such a great game that I had to vote for it regardless if it wasn't the biggest step-forward for the series as 3 was.

#46 Posted by Ravenlight (8057 posts) -

Two, mang. That "game" is a total mindfuck.

Mechanically, MGS3 was way better but I had more fun overall with MGS2.

#47 Posted by JasonR86 (10028 posts) -

I've never played Peace Walker. MGS 4 was the most playable game in the series which is why I enjoy it the most. Also it's fucking nuts.

#48 Posted by Jams (3043 posts) -

I can't pick one. They're all amazing in their own right. MGS was the first game I ever actually beat. I think I was 13/14 at the time? Not only that but I beat it over and over. It was the first game I ever finished, finished multiple times, and scoured every inch of that game for secrets. The funny thing was it'd probably be another 10+ years before I ever beat another game let alone multiple times.

The MGS games for me end up being THEE games to play. The ones that influenced what I want in a game and I'll always hold dearly. Especially since I had a best friend that we'd play and talk about it together. The saddest thing is that he got in a car accident around this time right before 4 came out and never got to play it because he's a vegetable now. I even tried quoting the game like we used to in elementary school to get him to respond.

Whew I'm getting a little teary eyed now.

MGS2 is insane, and the fact that it sold as well as it did and was as popular as it was is even more insane. MGS3 is undoubtedly a better game, but the second one is a giant middle finger from Kojima and that's hard to beat.
