I could of sworn it wasn't, but the quick look makes it sound like it does...
I know the guys getting those kind of facts wrong about games they are looking at is pretty normal, but MGR:R looks like it could make sense post 4.
Well if you guys are right, that blows my fucking mind...
I dunno why I was so certain it wasn't canon.. I thought once they gave it to Konami and dropped the Solid from the title it no longer was, I guess? I dunno.
Well after the quick look I guess I'm on my way to Gamestop to pick up a copy.
Just as a pro-tip so your brain doesn't explode because of the Metal Gear Canon, just take each game as its own stand alone thing. Sure there are connections to previous entries with characters and events, but those aren't so important when playing any entry on the series. As for Metal Gear Rising, yeah, it's canon. I think.
It's also pretty good.
Just try going to www.metalgearsolid.com and hit the "saga" link up the top. Lot's of Rising marketing but no entry on the timeline at all.
I don't know if it's something that can really be confirmed until we get something else that takes place post-MGS4. If MGS5 takes place years after MGS4, then it seems like the kind of thing that would need to be confirmed and seen through. Because I could see Kojima straight up retconning things he might feel like between Rising and anything else post-MGS4.
I haven't beaten Rising yet, but so far they don't seem to make any insane changes to the MGS universe. So far, I've seen some cool insight on what the world is post-War Economy and post-SOP cutoff.
I think he was introduced as a gay vampire man, if I remember the backstory correctly from the MGS2 manual. Or the strategy guide.
They mentioned he was the lover of Scott Dolph, Fortune's dad. Aka, the dude who talked through all the Tanker mission as Solid Snake took pictures of Metal Gear Ray.
Pie's right. Until another post-MGS4 game gets made, I'm not stressing it.
every new MGS game recons something, for the longest time I believed Meryel died at the end of MGS1, and the Otacon ending was the true ending. Until MGS4 was release, but then MGS1 and 2 had a translator who had difficulty with Kojima's writing and took a lot of liberties with his work. I kinda imagine 8-4 did a good job with Rising and this is cannon.
Does it ever matter? Metal Gear has become so freaking convoluted anyways.
Honestly, even with this it really shouldn't. I've been listening to a lot of the codecs lately and it seriously feels like a "normal" MGS game. A lot of information on just about everything you could imagine. This stuff was definitely thought about and it at least sounds like they tied it in well enough to the rest of the series.
It was confirmed definitively a while back that it most certainly is canon. They plainly answer the question in the interview below, not much room for interpretation with his answer.
Calling it out now, while Rising might be cannon now and atm, as soon as Kojima want's to do something/anything that exists past MGS4 in the time line, MGR will stop being cannon.
MGS:PO WAS cannon untill very recentally, hell it has Solid in the title and even came in the 20th Ann Collectors Box set they put out.
It's been made pretty clear that the only 100% cannon titles are the 5 main MGS games (MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4 and MGS:PW), anything else is seemingly up in the air.
Okay WELL! I'm done. Outskies. Gonna go kill myself because just...shit. You win, Hideo.
