So I'm very very early into the game. I've just rescued the puppy DD.

I'm currently focusing on Side Ops and exploring at the moment but I want to build up motherbase as much as I can.

Is it best to Fulton everything I see? or just be picky and only Fulton people from missions where the option is kill them or recruit them?

What is your approach to Fulton/motherbase?

I typically fulton mission critical people and anyone with an A rating. Im 27 hours in and you're constantly getting volunteers. I think I have like 400 soldiers at my mother base right now. Sometimes I just fulton people to get them out of the area before they wake up.

I fulton everything i see, i've gotten to the point now that i don't go for E and D rank soldiers though, must be C or better.

Just fulton everything you can. At the beginning you need everything. Even if you do not have room your weakest people are just placed in the waiting room with the strongest being added to the units, then when you expand your base it will fill up with the people in the waiting room quickly. When you get further in the game the stats of the enemies etc are generally higher so it still pays off to just fulton everything.

@juggertrainuk: I'd say don't be super picky although I usually tend to pass on people if they arent at LEAST a C in one category.

C or above, sometimes a D specialist with the promise of a ??? skill works for me.

The thing is, up until your base is full every soldier adds to the team. Once it's filled up it will be time to be picky.

@demoskinos: Ok next question, How do I know their rating before getting them back to base? I've heard of a scope that shows their stats, is there a specific mission I need to finish to get this?

I think kidnapping everyone you see will lead to headaches mid and late game.

Some soldiers have traits-good and bad. Over stuff it with bums and that will lead to fights and sick bay time that can knock your development level down a peg or two.

@juggertrainuk: as you level up your R&D staff you can make upgrades to your scope. Once you have that just use binoculars on an enemy to see their stats. The grade 2 version is the first one with this and has max analyzable rank of B, at grade 4 you can analyze up to rank S++.

I'm pretty close to the end of the game ( I think ) and fultoning everything has worked out pretty well for me. The bad traits don't really matter all that much and the worst recruits get send to the waiting room once you fill up. You can also just micro manage afterwards and dismiss individual recruits manually but once you get your first FOB as part of the campaign you get a pretty nice boost to your recruit cap so even the "bad" recruits will end up doing something. Of course once you get to the endgame the higher level recruits get a lot more common so you can afford to be a little picky.

As for the scope that lets you see ratings I'm pretty sure thats just a normal research upgrade that gets unlocked with your base level. Should be in the items section of the research menu and it'll tell you what you need to develop it.

Can soldiers without a ??? skill have a Troublemaker trait, or are skill-less soldiers safe? Or is it worth it to pick them up regardless and fire them later on if necessary?

Do you spend a lot of time at MB?
For me it seems like a revolving door out of the sick bay. 2 come in 5 go out.
And as I look through my staff I see its the combat unit mostly. I even tried switching around Ocelot and Miller for morale but nothing.
Is that kinda stuff bound to happen?

1) Troublemaker = Dump that soldier, not seeing those with skills of making peace on their platform have any effect on them.
2) When you get outer ops available, jam your reserves in there.
3) Afterwards, D or worse stats (as in D or E in every stat) = Dump that soldier, you'll run out of room to put anything beyond C in, and eventually you'll want to dump any soldier C or worse

As you play and grow, manage staff manually to improve R&D, Intel level to research scopes that let you see stats and skills, and get that full-size-lifter Fulton going Fulton everything!

@demoskinos: Exactly this. Early on, even mediocre soldiers can help you grow tremendously. Later on you can be pickier, like only taking people with higher ratings or skills.

Just falton everyone, it doesn't make enough of a difference to micro-manage this stuff. Occasionally go through your list of staff and dismiss people with bad traits or E rank guys when you need to make room for better staff.

28 hours in and I'm still fultoning everything in sight. Guns, people, animals, vehicles, it doesn't matter. It goes up with the balloon.

Can always dismiss guys you don't want (or eventually to rotate in better people).

It seems like there would be a finite amount of resources on the game (the main currency as well as biological material etc) and it's costing 300 per fulton, 2500 per deployment and 1000 per extraction. I feel like I'm going to waste a lot of money fultoning everything during free roam.

There are some repeatable things you can do for money, like the Mother Base target practice side ops.

@alistercat: Diamonds and material respawn, money is earned on every mission, MB will be refining materials over time. I'm "only" 10 hours in (and just 6% completed... holy moly), but I can't see resources being a problem.

Edit: Based on your GB name, I feel obliged to lick you.

I boot out all the "Troublemakers" and maybe you should too if you aren't! Many of them are "Troublemaker: Unsanitary" and they are usually the cause of sickness. Axe these people!

To the OP:

I only fulton guards with B ratings or higher or C ratings with skills usually.

@geraltitude: If you put 2 troublemakers in the same unit they just pick on each other.
