1UP & IGN Layoffs (again!)

Damn what a crazy day!

First the GB/CBS thing and now people are being dropped from IGN/1UP again ... it's that time of year.

Matt Leone and Thierry "Scooter" Nguyen are gone from 1UP

Jack DeVries (frequent guest on the Nintendo Voicechat podcast) on the IGN side

I'm guessing there's more...

1UP's Ryan Winterhalter was let go as well ...

God, today is too much for me to take. All in a span of an hour GB is going back to Gamespot, more job loss at 1up, my fiance gets a thousand dollar bonus, and I'm on deadline. I can't handle anymore shocking news.

well at least that $1k bonus is unquestionably a good thing :)

And people complain about GB? 1UP is pretty much in their last dying breath at this point.

Does anybody actually work at 1Up anymore?

Jeremy Parish is the only one from the old gang, I think. And he got promoted to Editor in Chief last year so I hope he's safe for quite some time ...

1UP is pretty much dead at this point. Sad to hear Scooter being let go. Surprised Jack made it this far.

I hate hearing about people losing their jobs, that's really a bummer. IGN and 1UP are not very good websites though, they are right down there with Gamespot.

1UP has been doing a lot of cool stuff recently! they moved away from the typical preview coverage and went into more opinion pieces that had something to say other than "game xy has potential". I really liked that.

Scooter has been hired and let go from OPM, Gamespot. 1UP, and various other organizations. He has been in games journalism for quite a while. He is a solid writer and I have really enjoyed his contributions to the 1UP podcasts. I am sure he will find a new place in the not too distant future. I hope he gets it soon. The man has a wife and two kids to feed.

I am really surprised that Matt Leone was let go. He was one of 1UP's founding members and wrote some great features including a recent interview with the creator of Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. I hope he lands on his feet as well.

wow that suck. ign has been pretty dead for me. i haven't been there for a long time.

1up was on top for me in 2005/2006... There were so many talented writers and minds on staff. It's completely different today, sadly.

It would be perfect timing to pick up Scooter and throw them into the GB mix now since he was also once part of the GameSpot crew.

Scooter and Leone are some of the hardest working guys in the games industry so it's really shitty they're being let go. I know they'll be fine though. This just depresses me because 1UP has been tossed around so much and apparently still hasn't recovered. I miss the old days. Don't know the other two guys, but hopefully they'll be fine too.

Uh oh. The buzzwords seem eerily familiar. Giantbomb.com is going to get "bigger" as well....and by bigger, they mean someone's getting cut.

I hated that Jack guy from IGN, but loosing a job ain't cool.

Agreed. 1up had actually drawn me away from pretty much every other gaming site and they made me the podcast junkie that I am today. It's truly saddened me to see it decline so sharply.

Gamespot was mostly replaced with people who look barely 16 because we are suppose to indentify with them (they are young and hip like us) and IGN has staff that are basically female models. One Naomi Kyle, presenting a show about gadgets. Who gives a fuck? These websites don't give a flying shit about anything if means drawing in more website hits. They would have fucking dwarfs on trampolines if they could get away with it.

I'm never happy to see people lose their jobs, but if it involves IGN I couldn't give any less of a fuck. The 1Up guys get my sympathy. The boil on the ass end of video games, IGN, does not.

Harsh? Yes. But as far as I'm concerned that entire site is everything that is wrong with game "journalism", and I use that term very loosely when talking about IGN. So again sorry to Scooter, Leone, and Winterhalter. Sadly couldn't care about the other guy.

Aren't too familiar with the 1up guys (but that has been a sinking ship for a while) but I do know Jack. And I'm going to sound like as asshole but I'm fine with him being let go. He wrote that atrocious "Yoshi is gay" article that caused a shit storm, all for cheap hits. I hate garbage like that.

Maybe next time they do cuts around that office they'll finally let go of Greg Miller, Colin M. and...well most of that staff actually.

They were, but I thought I had heard about them getting bought out by some company a long time ago. Hadn't realized they were still their own actual site. I left there and came here back when they did their first mass firings years ago. Oh how the internet changes.

staff at gamespot has to be nervous, eventually someone is going to say "why do we have two separate editorial teams? we need to streamline."

I don't know about that. I just know that I have no interest in any gaming website that Brian Crecente is an editor of. He was a terrible editor-in-chief at Kotaku and I can't imagine him being any better now.

@Hailinel: I think Chris Grant is the EiC and Crecente is the news editor.. I could def be wrong though.

I just want to give 1UP a consoling hug after all the stuff they've been through.

EDIT: And give them cocoa. That kind of thing.

Yeah. I feel like they just bought the site to slowly move people over to the IGN features and get them using their site. 1UP is basically no longer a thing. Bob, Chris and maybe Jose? Does Tina still work there? Other than that, I dunno.

1Up/EGM is what got me interested in gaming media as a whole. The 1Up Show, 1Up Yours, etc., are what got me paying attention to gaming media. It led me to Giant Bomb too, which is now my favorite thing ever, probably. It did this by making me search around on the Zune marketplace (I know...) for gaming podcasts that were highly ranked, which led me here. It's a shame to see them go, but I would have bet money that they would already by dead by now.

This is an old thread, but its a bit bizarre since Rorie was layoff today from 1up

I listend to all the 1UP podcasts and the 1UP Show, before they started laying everybody off and i came to Giantbomb. Very sad to hear that 1UP and Gamespy will be dead soon, even though I haven't looked at either site in years. I guess there just isn't room in the market for multiple, large video game websites (or magazines) any more. Hope everybody lands on their feet.
