Some Immediate thoughts and opinions:

  • What first caught my eye was that The Dark Knight Rises has zero nominations. That's right, zero. I gave up on the Academu every nominating Christopher Nolan for Best Director, but it didn't even get a nod in on of the technical categories. It seems that people either completely forgot about it(either due to the shooting or other reasons) or they replaced it with Skyfall as their annual bone to the mass populace.
  • It's great to see Michael Haneke get some nominations. He hasn't gotten much love here in the States, but he is an amazing director. If you have the time, watch The White Ribbon. If you have even more time and you also want to feel bad inside, watch Funny Games.
  • It seems that Lincoln has taken over as the front runner for the major awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Daniel Day-Lewis is a near lock for Best Actor and Spielberg's biggest competition (if he has any) is Ang Lee (speaking of past movies to see, go watch Brokeback Mountain which Ang Lee won Best Director for and deservedly so).

Anyways, what are your thoughts on this year's nominations? Who do you think will win? Who got snubbed? Let us know your opinions!

Suraj Sharma got snubbed in the best actor category. Granted, he wouldn't have had much of a chance at winning, but still. I've yet to see most of the nominated films, apart from Life of Pi and Beasts of the Southern Wild, but I'd say Lincoln is going to take the cake. Though I don't think any of the nommed films will top Life of Pi in my book.

Ben Afflack gets the finger for directing and acting, and Kathryn Bigelow gets the finger for directing but both of their films are nominated for Best Picture? Doesnt matter, as usual everything this year is forgettable.

Beasts of the Southern Wilde and Zero Dark Thirty got best picture noms? That is fucking stupid. And no Ben Affleck for best actor? That little girl got a best actress nom? You have to be fucking joking.

Daniel Day-Lewis and Steven Spielberg both deserve to win. Lincoln is exceptional. Still need to see Zero Dark Thirty.

As always the choices are completely nonsensical. How do you nominate Django Unchained for Best Picture but not nominate Tarantino for Best Director when his direction is literally the one defining factor that makes him films great?

Yeah that really strikes me as odd. Same thing with ZDT and Kathryn Bigelow.

The only thing it deserves is Jackson for best supporting actor, which he wasn't even nominated for.

Also LOL people thinking DKR would get anything.

Oh, I thought Waltz was the best by far.

Really? I don't get why people liked Waltz in that movie at all. He was ok, but I though his character was kinda one note and grew more boring and irrelevant the further the movie progressed. So much so I was starting to lose interest in the movie all together until Jackson showed up and proceeded to fucking kill it. I also thought Leo was better than Waltz as well.

Both Leo and Jackson killed it, but Waltz and his tooth wagon made that movie for me. I thought that he was just going to be the one not-racist white guy, but he turned out to be a surprisingly cool and funny character.

Christoph Waltz played his part in Django very well, but I think we can all agree that either Leonardo DiCaprio or Samuel L. Jackson deserved that nomination more so than Waltz.

Also very surprised by the lack of any nominations going to Moonrise Kingdom.

Affleck may not have deserved an acting nomination given who he was up against but he was still awesome and certainly deserved a directing nomination. Argo was great and deserved more than the technical nomination it got.

There is no other real surprises at least from what I've seen so far as here in the UK several films including Lincoln, Django and Zero Dark thirty aren't out until mid to late January. My question is from any of you guys who have seen Django is Dicaprio's snub as big a deal as people make it out to be, did he deserve a nomination? In my opinion Affleck (as i said above) deserved an acting or directing nomination for Argo.

I'm upset that Ben Affleck didn't get nominated for Argo. He did an amazing job directing the film.

But other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with this list. I haven't seen Django Unchained, Les Miserables, or Jack Reacher yet. I'm still trying to catch up on the movies that came out last month. Zero Dark Thirty, I'm interested in, but I'm going to wait for a while.

Lincoln will almost certainly win now. It leads all nominees, and many of the nearest contenders failed to get director nods. I can't see Silver Linings Playbook, Amour, or Life of Pi beating it. It happens (Shakespeare in Love, Crash, The Greatest Show on Earth), but it's pretty unlikely.

I haven't seen every film, but most of them, and Zero Dark Thirty is my favorite so far. I liked Les Miserables a lot, but I'm not a big fan of musicals, and I'm too familiar with the story, so I couldn't really get too excited for it. Django was great, but it was overlong for what it is and not as good as IB or Kill Bill (to me anyway). The Sessions was really well done--very well acted by John Hawkes and Helen Hunt--but it was pretty breezy and just kind of nice. It's nothing I'd feel compelled to watch again.

I still need to watch Silver Linings Playbook, Argo, and Life of Pi. I've caught everything else I think. I was trying to catch up on potential Oscar movies last night so I went and saw Skyfall. Oh well. It was still really good.

Add what ever Silent Movie that won it last year, such a boring movie. Alot how chucked together are the other actors in the lead actor category, you may as well put Adam Sandler in there just for a laugh when Daniel Day Lewis is nominated.

None of them appealed to me at all. I almost thought about seeing Lincoln, but I decided not to because it looked too serious, and I had already seen a movie about Abe this year.

And the winners is! JOURNEY! Wait. Wait a second. Come on, the game isn't that good. Furthermore, as much as I like Bond, Skyfall to me seemed far too cliche with other small problems, and I would have switched that out for The Dark Knight Rises.

Except Daniel Day-Lewis is a respected and extremely talented actor who portrayed one of the worlds great leaders with tact, care l, humor and believability. Apparently you haven't seen Lincoln.

I got up early and watched the nominations live via a Youtube live stream. The people commenting on that made me sad for humanity as the majority of them were hoping and praying that Twilight would be nominated for something.

Also, PREMIUM RUSH WAS ROBBED! (I'm kidding.)

I'm really stoked on Haneke getting so many noms. He is seriously one of my favorite directors at the moment. Also Amour is just so tragic and beautiful. I really love that film.

Bummed about PT Anderson not getting a director or best picture nom, though. Oh well, at least The Master was acknowledged for it's acting, which was fantastic, of course.

Except Daniel Day-Lewis is a respected and extremely talented actor who portrayed one of the worlds great leaders with tact, care l, humor and believability. Apparently you haven't seen Lincoln.

Uh what? That's exactly what I was saying, I doesn't matter who the other nominees are because Daniel Day Lewis was insane as Lincoln.

I usually want Pixar to win but I hope Wreck it Ralph wins. I liked that a lot more than Brave.

Really sad that Killing Them Softly did not get any nods, although why anyone apart from actors and people who like couture (not Randy) give a shit about the Oscars i'll never know. I thought it should have at least got Best Adapted Screenplay, and it should have given noms to Scoot McNairy, James Gandolfini and most of all Ben Mendelsohn who plays the most filthy, scumbag, junkie and absolutely nails the part - i've met a lot of people like that and I can't imagine it done better. I also thought the direction was great - especially the scene when McNairy and Mendelsohn's characters are having a conversation through a heavy nod.

Lincoln is such a boring, predictable choice - to be fair I haven't seen it yet (its not out here yet) but it just looks so much like the safe, safe choice which is going to pick up lots of nominations and bore everyone senseless.

Lastly ARGO and SLP are both fun movies with some good performances but think its a bit silly how many nominations they have. Every acting category for SLP???? When I saw that film the first time Robert De Niro came on screen I was like 'Why is Robert De Niro round their house?' - I didn't even realise he was playing a character - if that is one of the best performances of the year it has been a shit year.

EDIT: Nice to see Haneke getting some love, haven't seen Amour yet but some of his films have been the most amazing things I have seen. I have never had a movie make me so angry and distressed as Funny Games and he's made so many other great ones. Hidden, The Piano Teacher, The White Ribbon are all amongst my faves of all time.

Good to see the Academy biting the Spielberg Oscar Bait once again (although to Lincoln's credit, it's a way better film than War Horse, and Day-Lewis rightfully deserves Best Actor). Still, it's a shame that Affleck (directing and acting), Bigelow, Tarantino, and Tom Hooper got snubbed for best director.

Also, were the performances in Silvers Linings Playbook that great? I mean, O. Russell can get phenomenal performances from his actors (The Fighter), but modern day De Niro and Cooper are hacks.

How is Chris Waltz in the supporting actor category, he had by far the most lines in that movie, Leonardo Dicaprio should be in the supporting actor category, he was brilliant.

@CitizenKane: Yeah I would of put in Dark Knight for the cinematography category and sound design, but that's about it Dark Knight was best picture material but Rises really didn't deserve a nomination in the major categories, everything was too convenient and the ending was too drawn out and was pretty much ripped straight out of Inception.

This list really underlined what a fantastic year it's been for films, though I seem to have loved the Master more than the Academy did. The fact I can rattle of 4 or 5 directors I'd like to see nominated, yet can't think of any of the nominee I'd bump off other than maybe Ang Lee, you know that you have plenty of excellent films to watch.

EDIT: Also, pleased as punch to see Paperman got nominated. One of the most beautiful and impressive animated shorts I've seen in a long time.

Ha-ha, the only thing I've seen off this list are a few animated features and what's more, the only films I am interested in seeing are Skyfall and Argo. There's not enough explosions, boobs and guys getting hit in the groin for my tastes among the rest.

On a side note, there's a camgrab of Maggie Simpson in "The Longest Daycare" on YouTube. It's only 4:30 minutes so its worth a look-see.
