I prefer American Dad just because the show seems more consistently funny throughout the Seasons (Bar Season 1, which I thought was terrible). Don't get me wrong Family Guy Seasons 1 through 3 are amazing pieces of Television, and are in my favorites of all time, but 4 and above didn't make the cut for me...

Its funny to think that at one point The Simpsons were kinda like Family guy in its prime, with its kind of riskiness and edge, and now Family guy is starting to be the norm and people dont mind it so much with its "adult" content, and now i see that people are becoming a bit jaded just like they did with the Simpsons. So we need to reach another level of raunchiness and crudeness for people to be entertained and wow'ed.
but yeah i liek American dad, mostly because of Roger the feminine alien, awesome.

Both excellentand I don't get the 'new' Family Guy hate. It is hilarious and the random bits that don't fit the story are what makes it even funnier.
Humour is a personal thing. I can't stand Conan O'Brien and don't get how he is even popular, but if someone likes him, I could care less. Watch what you like.

family guy has gone down hill. i think they are just using old stuff they already did to get people to laugh. they started to have peter break Cleveland's house and Cleveland falls out of the bathroom. they have stewie say something incorrectly with more H inn the word. coolwhhip.
South Park or The Simpsons are much better. Fuck Family guy. American Dad is a little less shitty. Seriously though Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show are all really similar, in that they all pretty much suck. It makes me sad that alot of great shows don't do very well on TV. Yet 3 shows can still use the same unfunny bullshit cracks about celebrities and everyone loves it. I just don't see why anyone would watch these shows when stuff like Seinfeld or Frasier is on.
American Dad. Family Guy making me sit through an entire Coway Twitty video was fucking stupid. So was the bird is the word shit. If you condensed Family Guy down to the actual plot without the fluff, they would be four minute episodes.

Both are most certainly not great but at least American Dad makes jokes based on it's own characters and situations, as opposed to Family Guy which relies purely on pop culture non-sequiturs to pad out whatever thin story there is. Despite the Simpsons going downhill it will still be better than both on the strength of its earlier (but not earliest, lets be clear) seasons.

I'm really not trying to be a dick here, but do people honestly still find Family Guy funny? Shortly after they were brought back by FOX it became literally unwatchable.

They're not THAT similar. Only some voices and the animation style are the same -- and that's solely because they have the same creator. It's like comparing The Simpsons to Futurama or Sim City to Spore.
