Yeah, because one super bad thing happening means that millions of people not going to work and maybe not getting paid is awesome and cool

grow up

whoops!

Can we not just drag these extreme right wing congressman out of their houses mansions and shoot them already? This is fucking ridiculous to have an extreme minority of a party hijacking our federal government.

I'm not sure how old you are, but this happened once before in 1996. I was 15 and I honestly remember very little about it besides a lot of politic hand wringing, posturing and yelling. It was rough on some people..but rough on some people is kind of our motto at this point. Fucking sucks for those people on unpaid leave though.... I wonder how this will effect state governments.

Awesome and cool? Who said that? Many government essentials for the actual people are shut down but the bombs will keep dropping. If you don't recognize that as an example of where the American government holds its priorities, then you need to grow the fuck up.

#24 Edited by Marokai (2904 posts) -

It amazes me that the reason we're having a shutdown is because a hopelessly bitter and out of touch party can't accept that a certain law isn't going anywhere despite multiple elections and a Supreme Court challenge. Talk about sour.

So is this Canada's opening to cross the border and torch the White House again?

But seriously, that's messed up. The fact that the richest country in the world doesn't have universal health care is nuts to begin with -- that the Republicans let the government shut down to delay a small step in the right direction is downright insane. I know there are issues with the bill, but I get the sense the Republicans are less concerned with minutia and more incensed by the very idea of public money being spent to help society's most vulnerable. It's gross, and the rest of the developed world (who are all spending far less on health care despite being all "socialist") is looking at this circus and shaking their heads.

Don't get me wrong, I like America a lot. I think there's a lot of really admirable things about Americans ideals, and we take it for granted what a relatively benign and generally well-meaning dominant world power the USA is. I'll be the first to defend the US in most cases, but this display of selfish immorality is indefensible in my eyes.

Otherwise the mealy mouthed fuck-faces. No luv for our ruling overlord class at all. Nothing but the working person and middle class suffers for their actions. I wonders a bit about Obama-care myself, and whether he should of hung his hat so primarily on it, but the actions of the No party are despicable. Ultimately they have all failed us. I wish this was a toilet flush, but they will still be around tomorrow.

Obamacare is not universal health care. Jesus Christ, I wish people at least understood it even a little. But whatever, I got shit to do and can't spend time on GB much anymore. Research it for yourself.

I know, that's why I said it's a step in the right direction. I never claimed Obamacare was universal health care.

From what I understand (and forgive me -- I'm not American), it's at least universal in the sense that the vast majority would be able to get private care or be eligible for Medicaid.

Yeah, as McGhee said, it's not universal health care. It's just a bill meant to make health insurance more affordable and mandatory. The government isn't providing anything to the people; it's only making it easier for people to spend money on health insurance, and in the event you don't want to or can't buy it, for whatever reason, the federal government can fine you.

Again, the bill is not universal health care. Not even close.

Who wants to place bets when they will pass something? I say before 2 am.

there have been a cadre of republican moderates (lead by R- Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania and Peter King of NY) that were trying to get together a likeminded coalition to vote with the dems, but they failed in the last minute in an earlier vote and were surprised at that.

Also, one of the republicans literally tried to go to the obamacare site and it was 404ing and said that was literally like actual real obamacare.
