Yes, yes it was. Somehow I doubt it holds up, for whatever reason. I remember that third movie (the one with Entei and the Unknown and the last one to get a theatrical release in the west, iirc.) being super retarded though.

really, though, pokemon's only bullshit because... fuck. It's been on for, what, 15 years now? It's like some cosmic horror story where Ash never grows older and it's horrifying and he goes on the same adventures and meets the same 4-5 archtypes and HE NEVER REALIZES IT.

also it's really hard to make something interesting and also last that long.

I'm pretty sure there's some fan-fiction that plays upon that exact premise. Yes, I have friends who read fan-fiction and are way into My Little Pony or otherwise embrace the unfortunate side of nerd fandom with zeal.

I have zero idea of how the dessicated corpse of that series is currently doing (and if anyone answers me with a legitimate response I will immediately assume that you're clinically insane or 6), but I'd question if any of that early Gen 1 stuff holds up either. It's not like Pokemon was ever not a sort of dumb, repetitive anime aimed at kids.

#403 Posted by Mezmero (1647 posts) -

Doing all cartoons discussion now eh? I think I've sprinkled some cartoon talk in my posts over the past few years on the other thread. I keep up with Regular Show and Teen Titans Go! which are both really funny. Beware The Batman is boring and poorly scripted but it's still better than any of the current Marvel shows. Finally Axe Cop is humorous in an incredibly puerile way and is probably more like actual anime than anything I just mentioned. Voice acting is sort of flat though.

One Piece is getting good at the typical sluggish pace. Attack On Titan I'm still sort of torn on the more the plot develops. While I'm enjoying following it exclusively as an animation I will say that certain coloring gives away plot points if you all know what I mean. I can't help but wonder if some of these plot twists are less obvious in static black and white images but I guess I'll never know. I will also say that it's kind of funny that the female titan is basically using Haki though it's not like that was a wholly original concept to begin with. It makes some of the future prospects of this ability seems far less interesting for me personally but it's not like I'm going to stop watching anytime soon. Other than that I was rewatching some old Saint Seiya episodes. Yup, I still love that series.

I'd say it's more horrifying because while Ash just gets older, the girls he hangs out with seem to get younger. Yet somehow, Brock is the pervert.

Didn't Brock run off with Jynx in that one episode? I vaguely remember something occurring 10 years ago. Also isn't Ash's stepfather Mr. Mime?

#406 Posted by Sergio (1774 posts) -

@animasta: Considering Mr. Cream Puff was her boyfriend at the time, and in the first episode, he's brought back to life, I kind of wonder how he died, and why he aged and she didn't. Peppermint Butler looked so innocent back then, I want the back story of how he became familiar with the dark arts. Looking at other things, I completely missed linking Shoko to her appearances in earlier episodes.

#407 Posted by Animasta (14463 posts) -

@sergio: Im pretty sure she doesn't age because she became 13 after the lich thing, which probably means it's a biomass sort of deal.

I thought Ash staying ten years old was just something the English version did. But Satoshi (Japanese Ash) stays ten. The weird thing is that Gary apparently ages.

Also there have been 750+ episodes of Pokemon.

Since this thread has ventured into other cartoons, I'm hoping the next twist in the Venture Brothers is that Rusty and the Monarch's parents were swingers and the Monarch is actually Rusty's half-brother conceived at one of their key parties.

Dragonball is pretty ballin

#414 Posted by Animasta (14463 posts) -

I tried welcome to the NHK because they put it on netflix, and it seems really interesting (it seemed like chaos;head but without the di sword nonsense) but even the first episode had way too much awkwardness; is that pretty consistent or is it only the first episode? I cannot deal with awkwardness very well.

#416 Posted by believer258 (11058 posts) -

@animasta: I didn't finish Welcome to the NHK, but the main character continues to go fucking nuts as he's pushed more and more out into the real world. He is a sad, sad, sad individual, so if you ever feel the need to feel better about your social abilities, watch Welcome to the NHK. If, however, you don't like seeing awkward people be awkward, you probably ought to avoid it.

Seriously, though, one of the things I remember was the first time that the main character sat down to watch porn. There was an explosion or something involved.

While it's going to be made by Gonzo a Bayo anime got announced

#419 Posted by Animasta (14463 posts) -

@bocam: her hair thing looks way more... uh, well, fanservicey, than in the game.

Also I love the fact that anime has gotten so desperate that they're just porting over games now. I think a resonance of fate anime would be decent, serialized enough to make sense with 23 minute anime runtime.

#420 Edited by ArbitraryWater (11034 posts) -

Bayonetta is already the most anime, so this makes perfect sense. I bet it will still be totally incomprehensible!

#421 Posted by Zomgfruitbunnies (563 posts) -

Unless I'm reading this completely wrong, they're making a Bayonetta movie and not an episodic anime. It's been quite a while since GONZO's done anything noteworthy. Hope this turns out well for them.

#422 Posted by ILikePopCans (714 posts) -

A Bayonetta anime is something that does not surprise me.

Also, FUCK YES i was happy when I learn Gin no Saji was a split cour series today. Not the best last episode of the season, but I will take it for 11 more.

But yeah, Silver Spoon will be up there for sure this year.

As of right now I plan to try out at least 13 new shows and hopefully most of them will stick with me. Unfortunately, I just found out that one of the shows I was really looking forward to has a 5 min. per episode format, so that makes it 12 new shows. I don't know, there's a high chance that Kill la Kill will be up there, maybe one or two more as well and the rest will be okay.

The 2013 anime television series wikipedia page has 144 entries so far, by the way.

#427 Edited by TobbRobb (4413 posts) -

@animasta: NHK is prettty awkward for most of it, especially with some of the shoehorned humor. It really goes to dark places though... Might still be worth it.

Also, I can't decide if Bayonetta would make an awesome or terrible show. Without the appeal of the gameplay, is the batshit story really that interesting? XD

@alexandersheen I thought finding 9 shows to be interested in for fall was a lot! Mind showing me the list of stuff you are probably checking out? Here's mine anyways.

  • Arepeggio of Blue Steel
  • Coppelion
  • Galilei Donna
  • Ifinite Stratos
  • Kill la Kill
  • Kyokai no Kanata
  • Kyousugiga
  • Samurai Flamenco
  • Yozakura Quartet
  • Pokemon Origins
#428 Edited by AlexanderSheen (4676 posts) -

@tobbrobb: Sure, this list is on the first page too (although I made some tweaking):

  • Infinite Stratos 2 - Went through the first season, so why not
  • Nagi no Asukara - P.A. Works didn't let me down so far
  • Log Horizon - "The story begins when 30,000 Japanese gamers are trapped in the fantasy online game world Elder Tale." Hmm... why does this sound familiar?
  • Kill la Kill - Get hype!
  • Kuroko no Basuke Second Season - ...
  • Magi Second Season - Even if they changed the story, I still want to see it
  • Samurai Flamenco - If the taglines can be trusted, then this should be like Tiger and Bunny
  • Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio - "Fleet of Fog"... What?
  • Kyoukai no Kanata - Saw the PV a while ago and that made it look like something promising
  • Coppelion - 2036, nuclear accident... *in a Russian accent* "Get out of here, Stalker!"
  • Super Seisyun Brothers - "The two siblings' lives are full of comedy and otaku humor in this slice-of-life story." Why are you doing this to me? 5 minutes is nowhere near enough for me, girl.
  • Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta - Seems crazy enough to be potentially entertaining. And I like the art style.
  • Pupa - Sounds like a story out of Mushishi
  • BlazBlue: Alter Memory - I've always liked the BlazBlue games.

One or two might be less than baller, but I have to know. I have to know. Why do you think I'm watching Free!

#429 Edited by TobbRobb (4413 posts) -

@alexandersheen: You are watching Free! because it's surprisingly good. :D

Also, I might wanna add Blaz Blue just to see how it turns out. Forgot that was coming.

#430 Posted by AlexanderSheen (4676 posts) -

@tobbrobb: I have to admit, that catfight at the beginning of the latest episode was ridiculously dramatic. That was a good moment.

#431 Edited by ILikePopCans (714 posts) -

@alexandersheen:

  • Coppelion: Sexy High School ladies in Tokyo Jungle? I have to try at least the first episode.

  • Super Seisyun Brothers: Well, I was but if it is 5 min per episode, then I probably won't stick around too.

  • Kyoukai no Kanata: The most anticipated anime this fall, it has a interesting promise so I will see if it is a train wreck or a masterpiece.

  • Nagi no Asukara: With staff that includes Okada Mari who wrote Toradora, Hanasaku Iroha, I should like this if the romance is not too overboard.

  • IS: Infinite Stratos 2: YEAH YEAH HOUKI NUMBER 1

  • Golden Time: There's not to much college slice of life that I watch and this ones seems somewhat decent at least.
  • Freezing Vibrationish: I glance over the first season for some reasons so I will probably do the same with this.
  • Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita: with a idea that seems super

similar to Hataraku Maou-sama!, if this show is even half as good as Hatataku, I will be happy.

  • Ace of Diamond:Have not watch much sports anime with my time in anime (except Chihayafuru if it counts), but with this season being FILLED with sports, I guess I will jump head in with this one. It seems like the most talked about one.
  • Yowamushi Pedal: Speaking of sports... This show seems like at a glace to not be about cycling all the time so I hope I can find it interesting.
  • Unbreakable Machine-doll: i do like my technology and fantasy mix action.
  • Galilei Donna: Really don't know why. Im not a big fan of girl action shows, but I keep coming back...
  • Pupa: Little sister turning all werewolf, interesting enough to watch first episode.
  • Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!: cough cough what cough

#435 Posted by DocHaus (1286 posts) -

@alexandersheen: That's about the best explanation I can find.

@believer258: Serious kind of show involving drama as some high school kids try to come to terms with their friend dying. Heard good things about it but haven't seen it myself. Give it a shot.

In other news, I went and did that anime capsule preview blog with more pictures this time. Enjoy.

I'm bummed to see the majority are down on NHK in this thread. Granted, it's been quite a while since I watched it, but I remember really liking it. That being said, if the "awkwardness" is something that's putting you off, then the show is not for you because the focus of the show is that "awkwardness".

For new shows I'm pretty hyped about Kill la Kill and Kyoukai no Kanata. I'll see what's up with Log Horizon. The first half of Sword Art was pretty good so we'll see what they do with the concept.

I'm a bit sad about the lack of Attack on Titan talk. Episode 24 was full of hype and it delivered.

I REALLY liked Anohana. It was great character drama that made you feel for the characters (sorry for the non-description words, bad at describing.) The child hood friends coming to together and just some of them hating each other at first is great. If you like a drama show, than I would recommend it with out any caveats. If your not big in felling the feels, than go at your own risk because the show really does not have the funny or action bits.

Now I want to watch Anohana again. I know they release a Anohana movie that told the story through a different character, Wonder if its any good.

That show huh. Sorry, I was watching it but I drop it after the 9th episode. Hated how they made Yura all about winning. My favorite part was that stuff in the past with the boats, not the competition stuff.

#447 Edited by TheManWithNoPlan (4445 posts) -

So, only one episode left of Attack on Titan's first season. Makes me kind of sad, since it's solely responsible for getting me back into anime again. From what I understand, the manga is currently on chapter 49 or 50 and the anime is somewhere in the mid 30's. There's definitely room for another season, but the manga is a monthly release, so we probably won't see a second season for another year.

Anyone can correct me on that If I got something wrong. That was just me reading stuff online very briefly.

#448 Posted by Animasta (14463 posts) -

Korra got better, but I still think the Tenzin's family subplot is way better than the civil war stuff. Though I did really like how Korra dealt with the rebellion, it reminded me of Aang.

#449 Posted by AlKusanagi (851 posts) -

@ilikepopcans: Well, the show is all about Yura finding an identity for herself. She started up with airsoft and gave herself over to it completely to fit in, but then she became defined by it to the point of losing everything and hitting rock bottom.

#450 Posted by DocHaus (1286 posts) -

@themanwithnoplan: That's probably how it's going to go, and the manga still isn't done yet. Compare to Jormungand, which was able to pump out two seasons because the manga was just about finished when the first season premiered.
